New Time-Trial Maps Coming to Mirror's Edge 22

Kotaku reports that Mirror's Edge will be getting downloadable content in January which contains several new time-trial maps (seven for the Xbox 360 version, eight for PS3). "The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror's Edge so we decided to distill these down to their purest form for this map pack," says Owen O'Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. "We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game." There's a video demo for the new maps available as well.

    Console gaming these days is all about the DLC rip off. This was probably in development at the same time as the disc game.

      Seriously, what isn't in development at the time a main game is in development. As in, it might not have been actively worked on, but the planning process would have probably been started. This is how things work (now). But, they certainly aren't going to announce anything before things are getting near finalization. Why? Because, people are inpatient and if the announcement of something like this isn't shortly before the ac

        Link me to some rip off PC DLC.

        Perhaps those valve tf2 map packs and character upgrades. Oh those were free.

        Or the UT2004 add on map packs. Oh those were free.

        • Two words: Horse Armor. That said, it is true that "premium" add-ons are much rarer for the PC.

          The ease of pirating these add-ons for the PC is probably part of the reason for this. Also, PC gamers have long expected free add-ons and user-created content with there games, whereas this has been all but unheard of for console games until recently.

          Not all add-ons are a bad deal, though. As long as these ones aren't too expensive, they look like a pretty good deal. Mirror's Edge may have had a short sto

    • Almost certainly. And the game was extremely short to begin with, even if you sucked like I did.

      I only wonder if the PC version will support mods and map packs or if they'll make you pay another $20-30 at retail or online after eight months or so of so-called updates...

    I love this game. I like the approach they took here as well - I guess it'd have been too expensive to produce fully textured city levels like in the game, so they just went ahead and produced textureless levels, but lots of them. Looking forward to tryint it out.

      The sunny, ultra-clean cityscapes are the main reason I bought Mirror's Edge. I was really looking forward to seeing how EA would flesh out the city and even create entirely new themed environments to run through: Tokyo, Berlin, Steam-punk London, Dubai...

      To see them throw out the art design and go abstract on the first content pack is disappointing. Q*bert was fun, but it belongs on 8-bit processors.

  • So basically EA was sitting around playing Super Mario Sunshine and decided that the levels would be more fun if you didn't play as an obese italian plumber.
  • So when this game came out, a lot of critics winged about it not being a proper 'story' game with a narrative - just an overly repetitive FPS.

    Little did we realize it was a RACING game - and having no real narrative along with repetitive tasks in a RACING game (turn left, turn left, turn left) makes a lot of sense.

  • This might be the first instance where I buy the DLC and not the game.

    The game is only about 8 hours long...definitely not worth the $60. But the extra stuff might be fun to mess with.

    My guess these 'sleek' levels are nothing more than the test environment levels used during proof of concept trials. Still looks interesting.
