God of War 3 Gameplay Unveiled 30

Over the weekend, Sony used Spike's Video Game Awards to release new information and a trailer for God of War 3, the final installment of the God of War series that is planned for sometime in 2009. The press release described a new game engine which brings "significant strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds. With texture resolutions being quadrupled since God of War 2, God of War 3 will feature fluid, life-like characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos' fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale with many more enemies on-screen and be able to interact with levels like never before." Gamecyte notes that the news contradicts early rumors that the game might be an MMO.

Oh... you thought you were going to get paid? No no... You'll be paying us to test our new engine.

Say... you should buy a new pc too. Your old one is too slow for our new dynamic lighting effects, robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios.

    You don't mind do you?

DRM? Oh that... um.. yeah.. we don't call it that around here anymore. DRM is bad. Now we just call it the playability access virus. It won't hurt you. Much.

Sorry to disturb your ramblings, but GoW3 appears to be PS3-exclusive.

That's great news too. By the time the game comes out, you'll probably be able to buy a PS3 in a bargain bin right next to a Dreamcast and an Atari Jaguar.

Sorry to disturb your ramblings, but GoW3 appears to be PS3-exclusive.

I wouldn't say appears. After all, it's being created by SCE Studios Santa Monica, with "SCE" meaning "Sony Computer Entertainment". If it wasn't a PS3 exclusive, there's no hope for the PS3 (if Sony's own studio has to port to other platforms in order for a title to succeed...).

And since GoW isn't ported to PC, it's a likely to stay PS3 only.

The fun part is that those who bought the cheap $400 PS3s can't play the predecessors on their sh

        • You say the "cheap $400 PS3s", but isn't it true that NONE of the currently in production PS3s are downwardly compatible? Even though I have a PS2 that is working, I would actually pay more (yes, probably the $100 that a PS2 goes for) for the backward compatibility when I eventually (likely) get a PS3. But I thought that none of them were downwardly compatible anymore.

          • No version of the PS3 currently in production provides backwards compatibility with the PS2 (They all, however, can play PSOne games) but it's only been that way since August. You may still be able to find some new old stock that can play PS2 games, but it should be easy to find one on Ebay or Craiglist. From what I've seen, those sellers that know their PS2-compatible PS3s are one of a dying breed are indeed asking for a bit of a premium over an equivalent non-PS2-compatible model.

"Realism" means something that can be implemented with atoms. Otherwise if you ask that you have seen it before, then you run into the problem that tons of weird bugs and deep-sea creatures that live right now but haven't been discovered yet aren't realistic until they are discovered.

In layman's terms, it basically means, "It makes realistic sense, within the context of the fantasy." For example, fanfic where Spock beams himself to Middle Earth, and has a meaningful discussion with Aragorn, before shooting his ray gun at Magneto, is not "Realistic."

        No, but it is ubiquitous.

What gets passed as "gameplay footage" these days is saddening at best. The clip shows assumingly in-game animations, yes, but there is no actual playing going on. To save those who can't watch this the trouble, the video just shows off shiny new shaders and high res texturing detail (which is, admittedly, mildly alluring). Kratos is doing the typical moves found in God of War, God of War II, God of War: Chains of Olympus, ...

I'm excited for the game, most definitely, but this trailer completely misses anything interesting a prospective player or long-time fan might want to see, like the mythological beasts and characters and engaging story that the game series has brought to us in the past.

Trailer rating: "You missed the point. Come back after class to try again."
    • I guess from your post I was expecting more of a tech demo or something, but I thought it was OK at showing some of the game. However, it's certainly not a trailer, it's more of a teaser.

I never played the earlier games so perhaps it really is missing the point, as you say, and there's a lot more to the series than appears in this teaser. It did show some mythological beasts, though.

It is true that it didn't include anything I, a prospective player with a PS3, might want to see, but I don't think that was t

It sounds to me like you have never played previous games in the God of War series. The first scene can very well come from a typical combat sequence in game. The following ones looks exactly like the timed button sequences in previous games.

Actually I felt this was one of the better teaser trailers for a games...simply due to the fact that it DOES show gameplay. As was mentioned by one of the replys here, the opening sequence with the wall jump looks very much like a quick time sequence.

The main thing here was that they showed the actual in game engine in action, and not all CGI sequences. With the game so far off, I couldn't expect them to have the actual gameplay ironed out enough to justify a full gameplay video.

      Anyway, despite its short le

  • David Jaffe made some comments about the game looking mind-blowing a few months ago. He updated his comment recently to say that what we saw on the VGA's was not what he was talking about and that he still stands by his statement. So... we'll see.
