Unreal Tournament 3 "Titan Pack" Expansion Coming In March 67

An anonymous reader writes with news that Unreal Tournament 3 will be getting a free expansion called Titan Pack on March 5th. It will contain a variety of new maps, and two new game modes: Greed and Betrayal. There will also be new weapons, deployables, and achievements. IGN's preview of the expansion mentions a few more improvements, such as an improved voting system and client-side demo recording for the PC version. Quoting: "... the most obvious addition to the series is the new Titan. As you play through the game, killing enemies, completing goals and generally avoiding damage, you'll build up your Titan meter. Once it fills up, you can instantly mutate into a 15' tall Titan. The Titan has massive health, a decent shield belt and can fire homing rockets. Oh, and he can also pound the ground to knock back any enemies that get too close. In short, the Titan is a real game changer."

Interestingly, I just fired up UT3 for the first time in a little while, and was startled by the lack of servers in my area. For instance, I think I only found one Vehicle CTF server, and it was full. And then I noticed that the servers that were missing were the Midway servers that have been online since I bought UT3. I live in Chicago, which also happens to be the home of Midway headquarters, so that may be why I'm used to seeing them, but I wonder if they've shuttered their servers or if it was just a te

I couldn't find a decent TF2 server with a free slot a couple of weeks ago, so I fired up UT3. I haven't played UT3 much, so I figured I'd give it some time to grow on me.

There were literally only about 30 people playing each game type. Warfare had a few more (around 200), but that was it. There were at most 20 servers per gametype, and VCTF only had 3.

UT had nearly 3000 servers a few months ago when I checked it. (Compare that to 7000 in the months before the release of UT2003.)

Yeah its kinda sad to see that franchise die. I always liked the Unreal series because I thought that unlike the recent Quake/Doom's that they actually cared about the game not just selling the engine.

I think the expansion is to address the real problem with UT3 - the lack of any innovation on the play level. I REALLY liked UT2004 - in fact, it is by far my favorite deathmatch game ever (with a close second being Battlefield 2). I've put in 12 hours on UT3, tops - it just lacks the variety its predecessor had, and some of the vehicles are extremely frustrating when capped by good players or even the AI (like the dark walker with its insti-kill beam weapon). I also wish the game would give a bit more f

      • Part of the problem with a lack of servers is the way the game checks to see if you are able to host a game. If you are behind a NAT firewall, when you connect to a server you use a random high port to the router and the router Translates that into the Address and Port you want to goto on the intertubes. The game checks the port of the outgoing packet (which is a random high port) then the master server tries to connect back to the game via that random high port instead of the port that the router is using,

      • You can get it from Stardock's Impulse service http://www.impulsedriven.com/ [impulsedriven.com]. $30 on there and you can have it as soon as you can download it. Personally, I'm a big fan. An expansion will be great, but it is already worth getting. Basically if you enjoy unstructured shooters, either online or offline, it is a good game for you. There's no real single player game to speak of (there is technically but it is just various maps with cut scenes in between) so no mission/story if that's your thing. However, online

Agreed, it was disappointing. However, I discovered after playing UT3 online that the issue wasn't really the game itself, but the choice of weapons/maps that shipped with it. The defaults SUCK compared to what some people have put together on their own, particularly the guys at hedsteem.com. Some of their maps are great fun, and with the weapons mods (e.g., flamethrower) they put EPIC's efforts to shame. The game has much greater potential. Isn't this the kind of thing that makes stronger players stronger, and weaker players weaker?

I always liked mods which made weaker players stronger. Like the 'fat head' mod, or whatever it was called, that would increase the size of your head the more kills that you got, making it easier for the weaker players to get headshots. Evened out the game when playing with people with mixed abilities.

That's how I always looked at it, because getting owned by n00bs is embarasing when you're at the top of your game and if you're that good, it's even more demeaning to the nubs.

To each his own. As for myself, I play for the challenge. Handicaps are very useful if you want to maintain a challenge within a mixed skill environment. Getting that handicap is a badge of honor - even more so when you succeed with it. And in any case, at the end of the game, there's the scoreboard if you really need to have your ego stroked.

true. The adrenaline system in UT2004 had this kind of positive feedback making strong players even stronger.

Why not fill the meter as time passes for all players?
    • I really love the new Call of Duty, but is is a great example of rewarding the top players with better weapons, "skills", and accessories. Now they do provide newbie areas, which is great. But between levels 10-20 can be just brutal. It takes the fun out for a lot of players. Thankfully I'm in the 30's now so I'm OK, but I would prefer that such a system didn't exist.
      • Gimme a break, the weapons that you get aren't *that* much better than normal ones, and if you play hardcore a normal desert eagle kills someone just as fast as the golden one. This is exactly the kind of reward I'd like - minor, and easy for "new players" to get (most of the XP awards are for number of kills with certain weapons).
    • At 15' most players are going to be hard pressed to see more than part of a Titan's boot on their 17", 19", or even 21" screens so that's likely to handicap them considerably even with homing rockets.
  • The UT3 Linux Server still doesn't even have an official Version 1.3 patch update and now we're moving to a Titan Expansion? I really hope they bring out the pack for the Linux Server and do it soon.

Better yet, how about releasing the UT3 client for Linux on Steam. Didn't they promise a fully supported Linux system for this years ago? EPIC is really frustrating sometimes.

    • Making an assault mode for UT3 would just be giving onslaught mode or whatever its called a different name. You run to an objective point and get a new objective. I haven't played UT3 in a while but I think Tank Crossing is a decent example. You can blow up roadblocks to move your tank in closer and you also need someone to get the blast shields down. It is like Assault mode except objectives completions aren't permanent.
