Rockstar Announces New DLC For GTA IV 43

viyh sends word that new downloadable content will be coming to Grand Theft Auto IV this fall, called The Ballad of Gay Tony. They also announced that this bit of DLC, as well as the previous pack, The Lost and Damned, will be released together on a compilation disc later this year. The interesting part is that players won't need to buy the original game to play the two expansions. Rockstar's Sam Houser said, "This episode's focus on high-end night life contrasts with the biker gangs portrayed in The Lost and Damned, whilst giving us a lot of new gameplay possibilities." The press release describes the plot thus: "As Luis Lopez, part-time hoodlum and full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka 'Gay Tony'), players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price."

That sounds like a description for GTA4 and the first DLC pack. In fact, rockstar has hit me over the head with that theme in every GTA game since they went 3D, and the opening to one of the 2D ones on the PS1. Every single one, you get double crossed by others, and you double cross others. GTA4 had four separate ones that I can remember, and that's not including the first DLC.

You know what would be a really shocking twist? If rockstar made it through an entire GTA -without- a "Surprise! That guy that you thought was your friend is actually a bad guy!" They're the M. Night Shyamalan of videogames.

Fortunately, it's fun regardless of how monotonous that theme gets. The first DLC was surprisingly better than the original in plot, characters, and missions.

May I suggest Saints Row 2? It mixes things up from the drab direction GTA has been going. GTA4 and the DLC so far have felt like work to me... I played them to be done with them. Heck, it isn't even fun to just mess around in GTA4 because the cops are so touchy and persistent, and the cars drive all serious-like.

FTFS: "full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka 'Gay Tony')"

I will assume that he didn't get this name for being a jolly happy guy...

I dunno who'll cry louder: Censor happy stick-in-ass religious types or wannabe-gangster playing the GTA series for its "I'm so tough and dangerous... if only in pixels" image.

The partner in crime of a gay night club chief... can you imagine that and NOT grin?

  • I'll pass on this and future installments of the GTA franchise. Don't get me wrong, it used to be a wonderful game. But then, Rockstar got in bed with Microsoft. No, I do NOT want to have to log into Games For Windows Live just to save my game progress. No, I do NOT want to buy a game whose developers have no patience for game modding, single-player cheating, and other such tinkering. That's like buying a sandbox on rails. Developers who charge $50+ for a game, then require you to login to two or thre
  • Yawn. Somebody wake me up when Rockstar decides to include parachutes, planes and jetpacks in their new content. What's that? Never going to happen? That's why I won't bother myself with these new DLC episodes. GTA4 was fun while it lasted, but there is no inherent reply value like there was with San Andreas, and these new DLC episodes don't really have anything we haven't seen before. A big "pass" in my mind.
  • These DLC monopolies are crap. I paid just as much for my PS3 copy as someone did for their 360 copy and I get the shaft. I know Microsoft paid handsomely for it but if they're going to do this, just make the whole game exclusive so I could have just bought the 360 version at the beginning.

Oh, and as someone else stated, GFWL is crap. It's the same reason I haven't purchased the Fallout 3 DLC.

Meh. Now whiole sony and the PS2 was having all the exclusives of GTA, it didnt even make the news... it was "normal". Now Microsoft assures their product with dlc's only for their console and everyone gets pissed? You know how long ive waitied to play Final Fantasy on some other thing that is not a PlayStation Console?

Now one thing is bitching about the exclusivity and one thing is bitching about GFWL... which frankly I dont get your bitching either... if it bothers you so much, then torrent the games.
