Call of Duty: Black Ops Announced 110

* have a "shocking" sequence for that extra controversial touch
* not have any dedicated servers

This is my biggest complaints about the direction that COD has taken.
I'd much rather see a game with the same great mechanics but more open, like Far Cry or Far Cry 2. Let me make decisions about where to go and what to do.
That "on the rails" experience made the "controversial" scene in Modern Warfare even more morally twisted. Civilians were sent at you like aliens in Space Invader and all you could do was keep walking and keep shooting. I found that more objectionable than the content itself.
The best games give you decisions to make, not just buttons to push.

Actually you didn't have to shoot in that scene, I know because in the German version it gives you an instant game over if you kill any civilian.

The last FPS tactical shoot I actually enjoyed is a tie between Rainbow 6: Rouge Spear and Ghost Recon 1. After Ubi bought Red Storm, the games seemed more and more like arcade shoot 'em ups rather than the experience of planning an attack before going into a mission.
I stopped buying video games because no one made games I wanted to play anymore. Last game I bought was Falcon 4: Allied Force.

The point of every segment of the story mode in COD MW2 is to teach you how to play multiplayer well. Its a tutorial from beginning to end. Think about it.
In the "controversial" segment featuring russian terrorists and an endless supply of victims, you are taught the basics of moving, aiming and shooting. You have no way of losing, unlimited ammo, you move slowly etc. After that you are taught to pull the trigger at exactly the right moment, then you are taught to follow dots on a screen, then to be discrim

Umm, not in single player, you cannot. Only Silent Hunter 3 has a decent single player campaign from the Germans' side. I don't really care about multiplayer when it comes down to it.

That's multiplayer, though. Not a storyline with Good Democracy-Bringing Americans vs Bad Countries Fully Inhabited By Terrorists.
That said, what I'm really looking forward to isn't a game where you play, say, some Arab guy defending his homeland against the American invasion. Nah, let the player be an American soldier, just stop fucking portraying it as a race towards liberated flower-bearing locals!

You know...I've been thinking about doing a remake of Jagged Alliance 2 for a while now, with a different storyline and a style of warfare geared more towards guerilla and less to conquering and holding territory.
A small banana republic defending itself against an american oppressor...might make for a nice change of pace.

Agreed about CoD 4. As a Mac OS X user, I find myself playing CoD 4 quite often, to this day. Partially, that's because I own the native OS X version and there aren't a whole lot of good game options for native OS X out there. But it's ALSO largely because it's a good enough game to have that kind of "staying power". Because they want to have CoDs coming out yearly (ask Kotick why) but they couldn't make Infinity Ward make one per year? Of course now IW isn't going to make any more CoD games (well, a company by that name might but almost none of the MW2 staff remains) so it doesn't really matter.

While yeah, this story might seem rather pointless, it does come in a context that seems important. Well, interesting at least.
The whole controversy between Activision and Infinity Ward is hilarious at best. Also terrible, but hey.
Now I wanna stress that I am not really a fan of Call of Duty, I liked the first one, but then... it became kinda meh, because even when the first one was out, the Second World War was already getting used to the limit. I guess people really love that war. But I suppose it mad

Why haven't they made a RTS WWI game?
Dig trenches, tunnels if the ground permits. Have to deal and deal with chemical attacks, build up of muddy conditions as well as piles of bodies.
If it wasn't so depressing, it might be fun....

Even if this were to be the best CoD game in the franchise, I will not give any further economic support to a corporation that so easily and freely violates the contracts they have with their employees. I also will no longer support corporations that no longer listen to customers and give them what they want in a product(MW2 was just one of the many examples). I quit purchasing EA games after Ubisoft started screwing customers with the "constant internet connection" fiasco.

I get boycotting a company, but Sony is a brand, all of their subsidiary are manages by different people, I had a great experience with sony's digital camera company but a horrible one with their PlayStation. I'ld consider them different companies when it comes to specific products and not over arching policies.

This is really pissing me off. This game launches 2 days before Remembrance Day. MW2 launched the day before. I have more than enough respect for veterans and people serving right now, that I'm not going to respect any company that employs such cheap and tasteless marketing tactics. Even if it is the best game ever - they will never see one cent from me for this game nor will I ever play it.
Should they decide to move the release date, I might consider it at some future point. I realize that it is being released Christmas so there is some logical reasoning. It would be welcome to hear from the publisher exactly why this particular date was chosen to launch the game.

Technically, all wars in which U.S. had the moral high ground (WW 1 & 2, Korea) was fought by drafted soldiers, not professionals.
(Though the "paid murderer" remark is very disrespectful, regardless - I guess policemen are "paid murderers", too?).
