Call of Duty: Black Ops Announced 110

UgLyPuNk writes "In amongst all the lawsuits and signings, Activision and Treyarch have found the time to announce the latest in one of the world's best-selling video game franchises: Call of Duty: Black Ops is due to hit shelves November 9." The official site has a trailer, which has been dissected for details by the folks at GameTrailers.

    This game will:

    * have at least half of the playable characters dead by the end of the plot

    * have a "shocking" sequence for that extra controversial touch

    * not have any dedicated servers

    * have a multiplayer section with unbearable lag and bugs exploited within the first hours after the release

    * still be most successful game of the year

    • You left out the shooter-on-rails sections and the meaningless collection of objects to unlock achievements.

        the shooter-on-rails sections

This is my biggest complaints about the direction that COD has taken.

I'd much rather see a game with the same great mechanics but more open, like Far Cry or Far Cry 2. Let me make decisions about where to go and what to do.

That "on the rails" experience made the "controversial" scene in Modern Warfare even more morally twisted. Civilians were sent at you like aliens in Space Invader and all you could do was keep walking and keep shooting. I found that more objectionable than the content itself.

The best games give you decisions to make, not just buttons to push.

Actually you didn't have to shoot in that scene, I know because in the German version it gives you an instant game over if you kill any civilian.

        • The last FPS tactical shoot I actually enjoyed is a tie between Rainbow 6: Rouge Spear and Ghost Recon 1. After Ubi bought Red Storm, the games seemed more and more like arcade shoot 'em ups rather than the experience of planning an attack before going into a mission.

I stopped buying video games because no one made games I wanted to play anymore. Last game I bought was Falcon 4: Allied Force.

        • The point of every segment of the story mode in COD MW2 is to teach you how to play multiplayer well. Its a tutorial from beginning to end. Think about it.

In the "controversial" segment featuring russian terrorists and an endless supply of victims, you are taught the basics of moving, aiming and shooting. You have no way of losing, unlimited ammo, you move slowly etc. After that you are taught to pull the trigger at exactly the right moment, then you are taught to follow dots on a screen, then to be discrim

    • You forgot

      * Will have the first-ever 100% proven to never be crackable ever DRM.

While yeah, this story might seem rather pointless, it does come in a context that seems important. Well, interesting at least.

The whole controversy between Activision and Infinity Ward is hilarious at best. Also terrible, but hey.

Now I wanna stress that I am not really a fan of Call of Duty, I liked the first one, but then... it became kinda meh, because even when the first one was out, the Second World War was already getting used to the limit. I guess people really love that war. But I suppose it mad

      • Why haven't they made a RTS WWI game?

Dig trenches, tunnels if the ground permits. Have to deal and deal with chemical attacks, build up of muddy conditions as well as piles of bodies.

  • Even if this were to be the best CoD game in the franchise, I will not give any further economic support to a corporation that so easily and freely violates the contracts they have with their employees. I also will no longer support corporations that no longer listen to customers and give them what they want in a product(MW2 was just one of the many examples). I quit purchasing EA games after Ubisoft started screwing customers with the "constant internet connection" fiasco.

Did you actually read those employee contracts? I mean, sure, it's a shame that the Infinity Ward employees all decided to jump ship and launch a multimillion dollar lawsuit against their employer. On the other hand, they sold out. I repeat, they sold out. What were they expecting? Now they're EA's bitches.

Nah... that's too long and complicated. They'll just say its violent and ban it in Australia.

  • Call of Duty/Modern Warfare is dead to me....I got screwed on MW2 and I won't do it again, and I can hold a grudge for a long time, my PS2 died shortly after launch, and guess how many Sony products I've purchased in the last 9 years? Can you say 0? That includes Sony movies, music, music players, computers, games, etc... screw em. Activision can find out the hard way too.

Too bad. I enjoyed World at War very much and was looking forward to the Korean War and/or Vietnam.

    • Hmm Korean war. There's something new. A pity that game devs don't do "new".

      MASH 4077 the FPS. :)
    • I'm not sure how I'd feel about COD: Vietnam. But I have this exciting training sequence in mind where you play a congressman's son, playing poker and doing blow in the barracks of the Texas National Guard.
    • Didn’t we already have enough historical shooters? I think it’s a completely dead and sucked dry concept. Just like fantasy RPGs and default shooters. There is no way anyone could possibly make that feel fresh again. Because even every combination was tried.

      • by Knara ( 9377 )
I dunno, there's never really "enough", but there's certainly too many "half-assed" historical shooters out there. I don't care if it's "fresh" (whatever that means), I care if it's *good*.

This is really pissing me off. This game launches 2 days before Remembrance Day. MW2 launched the day before. I have more than enough respect for veterans and people serving right now, that I'm not going to respect any company that employs such cheap and tasteless marketing tactics. Even if it is the best game ever - they will never see one cent from me for this game nor will I ever play it.

Should they decide to move the release date, I might consider it at some future point. I realize that it is being released Christmas so there is some logical reasoning. It would be welcome to hear from the publisher exactly why this particular date was chosen to launch the game.

    • Because most of the westernized world (their target market) has it as a day off.

      Probably as simple as that..

oh and some marketing goon probably thinks he's being clever.. considering (afaik) none of their titles deal with WW1, it's nothing more then a gimmick.

  • Or is it just going to be one of those copy and paste deals where they reuse the engine that IW coded and just reskin the game? I think the latter is more likely.
