Tesla Is Adding Atari Games To the In-Car Display (theverge.com) 156
In the next software update for its vehicles, Tesla will include several playable Atari games as new Easter eggs. CEO Elon Musk said the update would be released in "about four weeks" and should include games like Pole Position, Tempest, and Missile Command. The Verge reports: Pole Position's controls will apparently be linked to the Tesla's actual steering wheel -- while the vehicle is stopped, Musk made clear. It goes without saying, but no one should be messing around with any of these when they're behind the wheel of a moving car. A much bigger deal for Tesla owners is that, according to Musk, software version 9.0 will begin to enable "full self-driving features" in eligible vehicles. The new update might be discussed further during Tesla's earnings call later today.

1) Vern Unsworth did not save anyone. He wasn't even on the rescue team. He reported the situation and provided information on the cave to the resuers.

Model 3 margins are now positive - without any AWD and P in the mix. Now expected to be 15% this quarter. Much of the cost this quarter was from a restructuring (incl. severance from layoffs), which turns from an expense into a cost savings from Q3 onward. 11k cars were stockpiled in Q2 to avoid the 200k limit - aka, Tesla had to pay for them but got no money from them (but will this quarter). Model 3 production rates dramatically accelerated [bloomberg.com] over Q2 and continue to accelerate; Q3 Model 3 deliveries will be 3x higher than Q2, and Q3 model 3 revenue growth even more than that due to the higher-optioned mix (half of all new sales are now AWD or P, which weren't even available in Q2).

SG&A goes with all stages - getting the order, keeping it, delivering it, and post sales support. And it doesn't go close to linear with any aspect of them, because A) economies of scale, B) G&A (you're only focusing on S), and C) large portions of SG&A have to be spent well in advance of the revenue that they are responsible for.
And deliveries grew by 36%, despite the huge number in transit.

I just played it this weekend!

It is not necessary to apply the brake pedal. I've reset the main console while driving, with foot on the accelerator.

I would be very happy if Mr Musk devoted some of his wealth to building a nationwide passenger rail system based on technologies already in use, which would actually do the country a lot more good than either the Tesla or the Hyperloop. One thing I am not really looking forward to, should I ever move back to the US, is being obliged to have a car again—something I've got along quite well without here in Europe for the last 10+ years.

Seriously, they should stop chasing distractions like this and fix the damn media player in the car. Its quirky and buggy to the extent that its a constant frustration, and the v8 "major overhaul" just introduced regressions alongside a coat of UI polish.
Of course that won't make for flashy press releases, or news attractive to people who casually browse headlines. You have to actually own the car, and drive it regularly, for any of this to benefit you.

Except that's not even remotely true. The mix has continually polled at only about a third of reservation holders wanting SR. The biggest chunk of untapped orders is Europe and Asia/Pacific. They don't even start selling over here until next year :

Which is fine, but I think Tesla/Rei now has to admit that the $35k is pretty unappealing and few people actually want it. So the idea of a really affordable long range EV has, for all practical purposes, been dropped.
In fact, you could say that the $35k version is basically a compliance car, in this case compliance with Musk's original promise. It's not something they really want to make, and it's not even very competitive.

Not in the least. $35k has been confirmed by two independent teardowns, as well as stated by Tesla itself, to be profitable. A profitable vehicle is in no way a "compliance car" But they're only - don't be shocked by this - pulling demand levers whenever they can actually make use of them. And at current production rates, they're in a flood of orders already. Demand levers include:
* Opening up left-hand-drive Europe and ASPA.
* Air suspension (minor, but some people are waiting for it)

Okay, how about this: I'm an actual shareholder, and Tesla has been doing easter eggs from Day 1, and they're always very popular and well received. It's a trivial amount of labour relative to the amount of positive feedback it generates. Kids especially love them (yes, a large chunk of Tesla owners, like the general population, have children). Unlike with past easter eggs, in this case, Tesla isn't even writing the games - they're just emulated Atari games. I fully, 100% support this, and think they should

I imagine this was put in by the 'entertainment console features' team rather than the 'critical UI' team or the 'self driving' team. They probably ran out of work that they were actually supposed to do, and found time to put in some easter eggs (presumably the games are licensed from Atari, but throwing in an open-source emulator could be done quickly.)
