Today Only, Two 'Tomb Raider' Games are Free on Steam (cnet.com) 40

"If you act quickly, both the gritty Tomb Raider origin story and 2014's Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris are free for the taking on Steam," reports CNET: We've already told you about a slew of free stuff you can get while you're stuck at home. I don't know if this particular deal has anything to do with the coronavirus, but right now you can not one, but two Tomb Raider games for free. You'll need to download them right now though, because these return to their regular price tomorrow.
The free games are 2013's Tomb Raider ("Lara Croft's intense, gritty origin story...there's no question it's worth downloading for zero dollars") and the follow-up game Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris ("the first-ever four-player co-op experience.")

Proceeds to murder an entire platoon of hardened mercenary men double her size and armed with guns with a hiking axe. ~'modern' 'realistic' new lara croft in a nutshell.

I see you are new to computer games. Don't expect them to be good approximations of real life, unless they are advertised as racing or flight simulations.
      • by Jarwulf ( 530523 )
Yeah well they have her killing off battalions of mercenaries singlehandedly and interacting with aliens and shit but then they shrank her breasts because its 'unrealistic'. I mean pick a stance and stick with it at least.

The first rebooted Tomb Raider game isn't like that anyway. Lara spends most of the time running away and trying to avoid contact with the bad guys, and when she does kill them it's with ranged weapons that avoid hand-to-hand combat. A bullet is just a deadly regardless of the gender/physical strength of the shooter.

    • The essence of the Tomb Raider games is that you do the same stuff you do in other games (run around shooting and killing people while solving puzzles), except you do it while staring the ass of a cute girl with huge breasts. The first part is done rather realistically in Tomb Raider 2013. The latter part is just eye candy, so players don't really care if it's realistic in the context of the game.

It's still a pretty good game. Well worth grabbing for free. Conan O'Brien reviewed it [youtube.com].
      • The "huge breasts" part hasn't been true for many years. Modern Lara has the proportions of a real-life thin and fit woman
    • Lara Croft has tight controls and blew up Atlantis, Nu-Lara needs QTE help to climb a steep hill and can't even dual-wield guns.

    • im actually gonna boot into windows for this to check it out ... gimme a minute , i mean gimme 45 minutes, by then the desktop should be responsive well that was only 15 minutes tops, but that splash screen shows REALLY really fast ... i get one priced at €19 and another that says "you are not allowed to view this content despite my claim that im born in 1980" ... it's a US-thing ? or im too late ...? thats too bad, otherwise i would have 502 games i never played i.o. just 500 gods dam'

I bought and played the first one once for about 20 minutes then its sat in unused in my steam library ever since. In its defense it was okay from the little I remember it, I remember most of all the cool little zooming effect that you get when you enter into gunbattles, and this happens to many games since I don't have as much free time anymore. The other games from what I've seen are pretty much the same storywise where Lara continues to cling with less and less credibility to her identity of being so hum
      • Leisure Suit Lara

      • So overall its okay, I'm just a little annoyed that they gave into pressure and shrank her breasts.

Amusing that this is your gripe. We've been inundated with female characters with huge tits and butts and wasp waists for decades, and they decide to tone it down a little and folks like you are up in arms as if you're being oppressed. Grow up and cope. There's no lack of pixelfap material for you out there by a long shot.

Not really. Video games have only looked realistic for a short amount of time before we went on this SJW bender. Before they really didn't even bother since it was mostly just blocks. I guess we had at most a decade or two in comics because we had puritans at both ends there too. I don't mind if people want games with androgynous women that look like men or boys and boring clinical games where at most you have Mass Effect style romances where the sensuality is like getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist.
      • It'd be cool if modern Tomb Raiders had an option to swap Lara's model for one inspired in the first games...but we'll probably never see that since that would be sexism and that's the worst possible sin one can commit in the modern times
  • for now.

Thank you /. After years of reading, it finally paid off. I got something useful after all.

If you like free games keep an eye on GoG. They have been giving away a lot lately.

Nabbed a free copy of Lure of the Temptress, Flight of the Amazon Queen and a few others from there recently.

In the UK there is a site called Hot UK Deals that flags these things up, you can check it for international deals like that or there must be something similar in the US.

      • Dude, Lure of the Temptress and Flight of the Amazon Queen have been free for years.
They're in the Ubuntu repositories, for crying out loud!

        • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

Sure, this is the Windows release that is basically ScummVM preconfigured with a nice launcher. There were several other games available too.

Shame they didn't do a desktop version of the new mobile edition that has voice acting. At first I thought I wouldn't like it but I played the remade Monkey Island games with it and enjoyed them a lot.

Sweet, Tomb raider (2013) is Linux compatible!

    Osiris is... not.

Grabbed the first one, though, thanks slashdot!

On the Epic Games store, they have Watch dogs [ubisoft.com] (Metascore 77% [metacritic.com]) available for free until 26 March. The GOG selection of free games has been the same for years.

Watch dogs is a pretty poor game IMO. It's basically yet another generic sandbox game with a map split into zones and cookie cutter side missions. The sequel is apparently a lot better.
