Sony Plans Limited PlayStation 5 Output in First Year (bloomberg.com) 20
Sony plans to produce far fewer units of its upcoming PlayStation 5 in its first year than it had for the previous-generation console's launch, Bloomberg reported Thursday. From the report: The Tokyo-based tech giant is limiting its initial production run in part because it expects the PS5's ambitious specs to weigh on demand by leading to a high price at launch, the people said, asking not to be identified because the subject is private. The global Covid-19 pandemic has affected Sony's promotional plans for the new device but not its production capacity, they added. The company has told assembly partners it would make 5 to 6 million units of the PS5 in the fiscal year ending March 2021, according to other people involved in the machine's supply chain. When Sony released the PlayStation 4 in November 2013, it sold 7.5 million units in its first two quarters.

With the mass US unemployment and inevitable price inflation of the basics from trillions of new dollars, lots less disposable income in the near future.
Depends on who, a lot of the people able to work from home are probably the ones who are most able to afford the initial high price of the console anyway...
The follow on effects of massive job less would be felt in console sales probably next year and probably will not affect initial launch much.

PS5 is too very ambitious, but I think they should swallow their pride, and work on a better airflow system. If they invest on expensive cooling instead, the device would be too expensive.
prior to the XSX's unveiling (agreed, shit name), sony said they went with a "lavish" cooling solution, "costing a few dollars each". this indicated heat was already an issue for the form factor.

This is a common misconception. There are no boost frequencies with the PS5. According to Mark Cerny, the 3.5GHz CPU and 2.23GHz GPU are the normal operating frequencies. Though they will be reduced by a few percent, IF the custom power control unit determines that the CPU or GPU workload is doing something that goes beyond their power budget, say running 256bit AVX instructions.

There's no doubt that PC gaming has its advantages. Likewise, console gaming also has its advantages.
The console is one standardised hardware platform, per generation, which opens up a slew of optimisations for developers.
Gamers don't have to worry about driver issues and problems, nor game resource requirements.
Controllers are standardised, with game specific features, so the developer can create a game knowing that every gamer will be able to control it in the same way.
