Twitch Is Developing Talk Shows and Dating Programs for Gamers (bloomberg.com) 23

Twitch, the online video site popular among gamers, is looking for its version of "The Bachelor." From a report: The company plans to fund a slate of original, unscripted series that would be live and interactive, airing two to three times a week, according to an internal document seen by Bloomberg. Its preferred genres are game shows, dating shows, sports, music and talk -- many of the cornerstones of reality TV. The global health crisis has provided Twitch, owned by Amazon.com Inc., a rare opportunity to broaden its audience and experiment with new kinds of programming. While many TV networks have struggled to produce shows during the pandemic, Twitch's most popular personalities have always filmed themselves from home.

Twitch Is Developing Talk Shows and Dating Programs for Gamers

Are we sure we want gamers to become a genetically distinct group of cellar dwellers who never date outside of their social group? Eventually that will lead to them becoming a hive minded underground dwelling race of Morlock like cannibals and I'm pretty sure that won't end well.

    • To be fair we can say that about any interest based dating sites.

However real life isn't like the Stereotypes. A lot of Gamers can hold jobs be personable and join the outside world. However it would be nice to have an SO who doesn't hassle them for wanting to play games a lot.

      • It is OK to love video games.
It is NEVER OK to be a "gamer".

This was the lesson of #gamergate, was it not? Isn't the jellomizer account far left? Don't the people who log in to post under it know about #gamergate and how the gamer identity is toxic? Or are you going to post something inflammatory like "It's OK to be a gamer"? That's a 4chan meme, as you are well aware.

        • The Jellomizer account seems to be Far Left to the Far Right. The Far Left people call the Jellomizer account to be Far RIght.

          • So, is it OK to be a gamer? There is a right answer and a wrong answer to this question, think carefully. Remember the 4chan meme.

I would take that as a compliment. I believe in some variant of the political horseshoe theory [wikipedia.org]: those at the furthest poles are actually much closer than they realize.

        • The lesson I learned from gamergate is that you should not have relationships with crazies.

The gamer girls are a little far off IMHO.

I hold down a successful career and haven't entertained that option. I just don't game nearly as much now because we want to do other things together. Sometimes we do things not of my choosing...

Why would Twitch do this instead of just supporting the streamers already doing this on the platform? RajjPatel already runs a "dating show" once a a week (it's as legit as any dating show on TV, meaning not at all). There are podcasts all over the place, which are basically the exact same as talk shows. They already have musicians and DJs streaming on there. Why would they want to try and create what is already there? My guess is the corporate heads want something is close to network TV instead of what grew naturally. This of course will appeal less to the people on the platform and not do as well, but that is what corporate heads do.

If I had to guess, they probably want to vet everything. That's not to say they won't tap creators on their site though, like Rajj. This is an internal document so that means that this whole thing is mostly in its early stages right now. It also means though that we get to watch a zillion people now rush in and try and form their own talk shows and dating shows in an attempt to cash in. This should be fun to watch.

Twitch doesn't concern themselves with gamers. Not for a long time.

Twitch is all about e-thots and their paypig simps. This is either just a way to promote their pet e-beggars, or a way for lonely twitch execs to get in the room with them.

    • A "simp" is neologism. A simp is a man who invests a lot of time and energy into women who have zero interest in him. It is often used to refer to the (paying) fans of female Twitch streamers. Can also be used as a verb, i.e. "you'd think i'm homer the way i simp, son." There is even a simp emoji. [knowyourmeme.com]

I'm glad that I didn't understand that comment.

  • If this saves/creates the (love)life of even one fat, pimply, greasy-haired gamer, it's worth it (to his parents).

  • People will look at Twitch and say, "Remember when they used to stream video games?"

  • Interesting information. For a long time I tried to create background music for my projects on Twitch, but all my attempts were unsuccessful. So I found the best solution to my problem. I find the background music I need at https://taketones.com/moods/ha... [taketones.com] on this resource there is always a large selection of great music tracks.
