Sony Is Planning a PS5 Conference For As Early As Next Week (bloomberg.com) 14

Sony is planning a digital event to showcase games for its next-generation PlayStation 5 that may take place as early as next week, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. Bloomberg reports: The virtual event could be held June 3, though some people also cautioned that plans have been in flux and that the date may change. Other PlayStation 5 events may follow in the coming weeks and months, and Sony is not expected to reveal every essential detail on the console during its first presentation. The Japanese tech giant has only let out a trickle of information on the PlayStation 5, which the company says is still planned for release this holiday season, despite the Covid-19 pandemic that has damped its promotional plans. Fans have been eager to hear about the lineup of video games that will launch alongside the console and those that will be revealed later.

Video game conferences are cool and all, but only a tiny percentage of people could attend them anyway - so it seems like for a while now announcements have been mostly online anyway, so I don't see any downside to what Sony is planning to do here.

If it fares well It may mean video game conferences (well, at least E3) fade away quite a bit... it happened ten years ago or so for photo gear conferences, video game conferences have had their time.

Also, I get that the editors were born last week, but that's the logo for Digital, not just "digital stuff on computers". Like if you use Apple's logo to talk about Granny Smith apples.

Also, why is the aspect ratio of the DEC logo butchered so badly? Have the editors never seen the logo in print?

      • They probably don't even know what "aspect ratio" is, nor do they know how bad it is to not respect it.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that aspect ratio is the Rodney Dangerfield of the design world.

Too many people think "design is easy" and we get bullshit like botchered aspect ratios, images saved in the wront formats, flat user interfaces, hidden controls, pale pastel colours, lack of contrast, etc.

That seems unlikely. Slower than a *great* gaming PC certainly, but one of the persistent benefits of consoles over PCs, since before PC was a common term, has been that the uniform hardware allows for MUCH better optimization. And thus much better performance for the same hardware. And *dramatically* better performance for the same price when you consider that a "cutting edge" console has generally cost about as much as a midrange video card for a f

      • That, and a lot less OS between the metal and your game.

      • Personally, i am impressed with the graphics displayed by my OneX on my LG 4k tv, considering how underpowered it is compared to a top of the line gaming pc. Maybe i am just grateful i can play games like these, compared to the ones i played on the 2600 and arcades back then.

That was true around 2008 but not anymore. The popular off the shelf engines like Unreal and Unity have created a wealth of knowledge about their optimization. Not to mention vulkan and dx12 on the driver side of things. You can see this effect in the port costs dropping so sharply that timed exclusives were all they can afford.

The console advantage is not there anymore.

Unless the Xbox and ps5 are massively downgrading their specs it is a lot faster than your average or even top end gaming PC.

You're linking about news relating to a game console to freakin' Bloomberg?

We are Microsoft. Unix is irrelevant. Openness is futile. Prepare to be assimilated.
