Nintendo is going back to the beginning with a modern version of its original Game & Watch handheld that's been revamped with a full-color LCD. It can play Super Mario Bros. in honor of the franchise's 35th anniversary. The new handled was announced during a surprise Nintendo Direct showcase. From a report: In addition to Super Mario Bros., the handheld can also play Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2) and an updated version of Game & Watch: Ball that stars Mario (instead of Mr. Game & Watch). [...] The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. handheld will be released on November 13th in "limited production" for $49.99.

For some reason, Slashdot tends to "forget" that I checked the disable advertising box a day or two after I click it. I'm sure that's just a glitch. Not intentional at all.
Fortunately, adblockers work just fine.

I bought one of those. It's not worth the time, money, and effort to make it usable.
First, I had to fight to get them to ship the damn thing. They apparently don't have inventory. They go through some drop shipping outfit like a shady ebay seller 20 years ago. Let's call it my first and last purchase from Slashdot Deals.
The unit itself is one of those NES on a chip jobs. The buttons are all wrong, so I had to swap them around to make it playable. (The traces are easy to cut and solder, at least). Ther

Yes, nostalgia, but $50 seems steep for a handheld thing with a tiny screen and otherwise limited capabilities. The retro game consoles which have come out around Christmas over the past few years are far superior, and I think they were priced lower.

Releasing a very small screen for people now in their 40s and 50s doesn't seem like a great idea. Our eyesight isn't what it used to be.

Maybe its using a lower-power ARM chip running some variant of the same NES emulator that powers the NES Classic and the Virtual Console.

1. Stop using the Game & Watch brand, if you are no longer making watches.
2. Nintendo could easily add a dozen games of their 715 or just a few of their exclusive rights titles, but they don't want to compete against their Switch Nintendo
