Kojima's Infamous 'P.T.' Is Not Playable On PlayStation 5 (polygon.com) 16

tlhIngan writes: Many years ago, Kojima Productions produced P.T., a "playable teaser" (rumored meaning to P.T.) for a now-cancelled Silent Hill survival-horror reboot. This was a popular teaser but when Kojima and Konami parted ways, it was swiftly removed from the Sony PlayStation Store. People who downloaded the trailer could still re-download it for a period but that was swiftly removed, leading to PS4s preloaded with the game spiking in price. Since the PS5 offers backwards compatibility, reviewers did test the PS5 playing back P.T. to find it still worked. However, this was short lived, as Sony removed the trailer from working in backwards compatible mode, as well as removing the ability to transfer the game to the PS5. Sony's response to the removal was "it was a publisher decision" to remove it from the backwards compatibility list.

The corporations have clearly decided that this is a piece of cultural history that HAS to vanish.

This should serve as a reminder that "it's not your console," same as with Microsoft and Windows 10's "it's not your computer."
    • Indeed. And what if the corporation controls the majority of searches on the net? Or the communication between billions of people?

That's ok, though, it's bad only when governments do it. Like mentioning a certain event on a certain square in the year 1994....wait, what do you mean I'm banned from Twitter !?!

      For now.
If konami gets a bit more salty, they could just tell sony to make a firmware update that erase the game, and there's absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.

As sad as this is, it makes owning PT a real novelty.

And it's nice to have something that's digital be a novelty and not due to artificial shortage of supply*.
(* well that's exactly what it is, but not with the intent to drive up the value of PT as some marketing scheme.)

And people scoff when I warn of killswitches.

"Oh, they wouldn't actually do it!"

  • What possible "gain" does Sony or Konami gain by removing this demo ? Why not simply leave it alone just for the goodwill of it ?

Why is there a "backwards compatibility list" and why is it arbitrary at the choice of a publisher? Either the PS5 can play PS4 titles or not.

I think it's about time Sony fired their PR department, even their excuses make the company look like a bunch of evil shitbags.

    • It's the company being a bunch of evil shitbags that makes them look like a bunch of evil shitbags.

It's Sony. It's on my personal boycott list since before PS1.

  • There are many P.T. remakes. The latest, closest to the original is, I think, Unreal P.T. It is not officially available anymore but getting it is not really a problem.

So if you just want to play P.T. and have a PC, it is not a problem. If you are a purist and want the original, keep your PS4. As someone else mentioned, it makes P.T. more "legendary" but thanks to the remakes, it doesn't actually prevent you from actually playing the thing. And BTW, it is essentially a walking simulator, so you always have

This is why we want consoles with optical disc drives. This is why we don't want mandatory always-on internet connectivity as a requirement. This is why when we BUY a game, we expect it to be OURS!
