Historic Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin Commemorated in 'World of Tanks' (space.com) 26

Space.com writes: Tank battles and history will collide this month as the makers of the free-to-play game "World of Tanks" honors the legacy of famed cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin for the 60th anniversary of his historic launch into space... "World of Tanks" developer Wargaming has launched its "To The Stars!" event, which recruits Gagarin into the game along with Vostok 1 themed goodies for players. The event launched Wednesday (April 7 ) and runs through April 19. Gagarin will be an in-game commander, dressed in his iconic orange flight suit, who will represent the U.S.S.R. nation.

"World of Tanks" creators worked with Gagarin's daughter, Galina Gagarina, to launch a commemorative website for the 60th anniversary of Vostok 1. You can see that "To The Stars! website here, where players can also track their progress in the event.

"Yuri Gagarin proved that humans can live and operate in space. His flight encouraged and gave hope to all those who dreamed of this! It kickstarted the deep understanding of humanity's role in preserving and developing our cosmic home — Earth," Galina Gagarin said in a statement. "I'm happy to know that, through the millions-strong audience of World of Tanks, the memory of mankind's first foray into space will be preserved for years to come!"

The press release promises a "shower of cosmic activities," including return of "Gravity Force Mode" between April 12 and April 18 with a new ability that "allows tanks to jump up and operate in the air."

And the Wargaming/MS-1 team behind the mobile tank game "World of Tanks Blitz" commemorated Gagarin's historic flight by launching a tank model into the stratosphere.

  • Wow I just realized that I have no idea how Russian surnames work. Do they have a gender?

Most languages indicate gender in nouns and pronouns. English is a major exception to this.

Then again, gender is, at least technically, an aspect of language. And in Russian, the suffix -ina or -inova denotes a feminine member of a given family, and -ich or -evich denotes a male member of a given family.

Or at least it did, when I studied Russian, ~40 years ago. . .

    • Of course they do -- it's a Slavic language after all. Gender is pervasive in Slavic languages, you can't avoid it in pretty much any useful sentence.
      • And as an added bonus they make for great tongue-twisters. Try saying "Galina Gagarina" a hundred times in rapid succession.
      • Gender is pervasive in Slavic languages

Grammatical gender is present in many modern languages descended from Indo-European [wikipedia.org]. The original Indo-European had three genders (masculine, feminine and neuter). Some modern child languages (many Slavic ones for example), have retained all three, others have only kept two (most Romance languages, with the exception of Romanian and Asturian which kept the three genders of Latin), and others have lost even that. English in particular barely has any remains of grammatical gender, mainly in pronouns.

Huh, I wonder if the loss of the gendered words has led to the situation where the United States as a majority-English-speaking locale is trying to remove gender from everything?
  • I thought I had checked that "disable advertising" checkbox. Strange, must be a fluke...

Like no lie if they made World Of Science Fiction Spaceships I'd just pay up.

Also I dispute that they are that bad. There's a ton of companies that make shitty games with abusive pay systems, Wargaming makes good games with abusive pay systems.

    • Not pay to win. You basically can level up in the game faster if you have money.
But you can still enjoy the game without paying. Plus it is not like you can't level up fast enough without paying unlike some other games.

      • > Not pay to win

        BULLSHIT.

        Does it have loot boxes?
Can you get premium ammo without RMT? Can you sustain only using Premium ammo?
Can you get premium tanks [worldoftanks.com] without RMT?
Can you get extra garage space without RMT?

Found the dumb shill who doesn't know what P2W means.

        Stop defending this P2W garbage.

Yeah, sure (except for the premium ammo thing, haven't bothered with that aspect of the game: take the view that I'm not playing the game on "easy mode" by doing so). Got more garage slots and premium tanks than I know what to do with. To do this, I've spent less on WG's games over the years than on buying one copy of, say, the latest Civ game, and got more gameplay out of it. Including those things you mention. Rather than "Pay To Win", it's more properly "Pay to Win Faster than you do for Free". Migh

        • About premium ammo, you have been able to buy it with silver which is an in-game currency you can grind by simply playing in game for years already.
I have premium tanks I didn't use physical currency to get.
They typically have a running mission which runs like once a year. Typically on their anniversary which gets you a tier 8 premium heavy tank.
There are also missions which give garage slots which happen every once in a while.
I even have some gold which I got from missions.

You just need to spend a lot of t

          • Oh yeah, you can also use bonds go get premium tanks now, so you don't even need to do the yearly mission.
You get bonds by completing certain smaller mission which happen all the time.

It might take months of play to get a premium vehicle this way but it certainly isn't impossible. I have done it.

If you don't pay you don't win much. Its a slow grind to ever progress on a free account and a breeze with come coin. Its not worth it and I quit playing a long time back.
