Sony Set To Announce 'PlayStation Plus Video Pass' (videogameschronicle.com) 13

Sony looks set to roll out movie and television content into PlayStation Plus subscriptions, according to images briefly uploaded to its website on Wednesday. From a report: A logo for 'PlayStation Plus Video Pass' was published on Sony's official website today, along with its description on its Polish website (now removed). From the report: "A new benefit available for a limited time on PlayStation Plus... PS Plus Video Pass is a trial service active 22.04.21 - 22.04.22. The subscription benefit is available to PS Plus users in Poland." It's not clear if the listing is describing a global or local service, but weâ(TM)ve requested clarification from Sony Interactive Entertainment.

  • Yet another over price streaming service that doesn't offer anything that would get me to switch from TPB.
    • I am waiting for a legitimate one stop shop. Let me go to a site and buy any show or a season and watch it and make it realistically affordable. I can understand that they can't complete with piracy on cost but they could at least do it on service.

Yeah, that is the madness here.

There are a fragmented bunch of 'apps' with somewhat different interfaces, features, and some portion of the content I am entitled to.

Versus traditional media and offline media, where the playback experience is not inexorably tied into the currently-entitled distributor of the media. The illegal copies are not only 'just as good' as legitimate, they provide an unambiguously better user experience.

In an alternative world, the streaming vendors would have a consistent set of sta

      • Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, FandangoNow, Microsoft to name a few have most movies and shows for people willing to pay. These ones at least support Movies Anywhere which allows cross digital rights between services for most large movie studios as well. At least in the US.

Google, Amazon and Apple have that still, you know. Google has their TV and Movies thing, and Apple has their iTunes store. Both still allow you to buy TV shows by the episode (around $3-5 each) or a season (around $20-40). And they're typically available day afte

        • The last time I went to any of those services there were things I couldn't find. No Game of Thrones, no SVU, no American Pickers. When I don't find it I stop looking.

So your barrier to entry is that the source has to have all media ever made, from anywhere, anytime? All of the current barriers to that should fall away. Then, and only then, would you consider laying down your handful of dollars.

Okay, no problem. We'll let you know when that's done.

            • Not all media, just popular shows from popular sources in one place. I don't want to have to go to five grocery stores to find white bread.

Yep, else just another reason not to use the service.

  • I was seriously getting worried we were gonna make it a whole week without a new streaming service being announced. Thank you, Sony.

  • Even as a former (long ago) Sony employee, the way PS Video and Vue were positioned was a little bit weird. In particular, once UltraViolet (and now MoviesAnywhere) was a thing, not making PS Video a provider for that seemed truly bizarre. No one is going to pay one time for digital movie rights on one device only. Even the providers that do have solo purchases (Amazon Prime) have that video usable on multiple platforms via apps.

If PS Video was part of MoviesAnywhere, I'd have no problem using it instead of
