Nintendo Switch OLED Model Will Go on Sale October 8th for $350 (theverge.com) 28

Nintendo is announcing a new Switch model today with a larger 7-inch 720p OLED display. While rumors had suggested this new Switch would ship with a new Nvidia chip inside, it doesn't look like that's the case. From a report: Nintendo lists this Switch OLED model as only supporting 1080p via TV mode, and rumors had suggested 4K support, thanks to a rumored Nvidia chip upgrade. The Switch OLED model will go on sale for $350 starting on October 8th. Other than the new screen, this revised model includes an adjustable stand for tabletop play, 64GB of built-in storage (up from 32GB), a new dock with a wired ethernet port built in, and improved audio for handheld or tabletop play. Nintendo only mentions "up to 1080p via HDMI in TV mode" for the TV dock, so the rumored 4K mode isn't part of this OLED Switch.

The switch is 4 years in to the typical 5-7 year lifecycle for a game console. Nintendo doesn't want to backport 4K to the switch when they have a new console in the works.

Nintendo games are generally low detail to begin with, so the resolution bump would be lost on most people.

I was hoping that the new model would push down prices on the old ones. They are still quite expensive used and I want to play Mario Marker 2. Sometimes I though I should just splurge on it but for one game...

I wish the Lite had been TV only too, I'll never use it hand-held and would love a version that doesn't have a screen.

Expensive? The full-on switch is "only" $299. For that you get a dockable handheld with the best screen a Nintendo device has had that still isn't as nice as the OLED Vita screen, two non-ergonomic and failure prone joy-cons, only 32GB of built in storage, a tiny little flip out stand that's worthless, and a dock without an Ethernet port, and meh selection of NES/SNES games if you pay for NSO. Still no Earthbound or Chrono Trigger.

        So something like this?

Yes, a PSTV is on my list of things to acquire.

        • "a tiny little flip out stand that's worthless"
Well, my kid's Switch no longer has the flip out stand as it broke in the initial few months of use. I'd say it's less than worthless.

    • No one needs 4K for a game on a portable device / TV / computer monitor. It's idiotic. 1080p with proper antialiasing looks great, and you don't "see teh pixelz", especially considering the fact that you're mostly looking at moving images, from a sufficient distance that gives you focus on enough of the image, and not stationary pixels from a palm's distance.
      • The rumors were the new Switch screen was 720p but it could output 4K content to a capable TV. I anticipate games moving to 4K before other content like TV and movies.

Netflix and YouTube had 4k content before Sony or MS consoles.

New content for all 3 is not in 4k though.

        • Five commercial stations in our mid sized and sports crazed border town have upgraded their hardware to ATSC 3.0. Assuming a full implementation that implies suppott for 4K HDR OTA broadcasts at 60fps or better with surround sound. Disney+ doesn't surcharge it's 4K content and production values are theatrical quality.
    • Nintendo specializes in mobile and "semi-mobile" systems, and their mantra for a long time has been "withered technology". Why would they support 4K at all?

  • So it has a slightly larger but OLED screen for $50 more. Is that it? Meh?
    • No. Why can't you read the fucking paragraph?
      • My point as you missed it is the new Switch is only slightly different than the current Switch and in ways that most people will not care about. Ethernet? Probably not. 64GB instead of 32? Seeing how most people use SD cards, probably not.
        • Ethernet would be great. Now if they would just get rid of the screen... Having a universal platform is great, but multiple form factors is even better. I don't want a Switch Lite - I still want a console and I don't want to pay with or deal with a tiny screen or batteries.

You can get ethernet now on the existing switch plus a couple of extra USB ports for charging controllers with a $15 USB dongle that you plug into the dock.

        • How about fixing the freaking gimbals? For 350 bucks, it oughta come with Hall effect gimbals like a proper RC transmitter.

    • So it has a slightly larger but OLED screen for $50 more. Is that it? Meh?

Agreed. Most games (to my older eyes) are barely playable on the built-in screen as they are clearly optimized for readability on a large TV. I tried playing a couple of the games I have on the built-in screen and quickly realized the user experience was greatly diminished. So I just leave it in the dock 99+% of the time, and a nicer screen has no real utility for me.

Caveat is that I originally bought the switch solely to play RingFit during the height of COVID lockdowns, and only have a few other things

  • I can't even count the number of times I was able to get 10 minutes of play time in and then casually stop because the Switch has the console-level ability to suspend game play with sleep mode. No more worrying about save points. Just make sure the battery is charged and put it to sleep.

    • Does this sleep function work the same in docked mode? I would expect so, but good to know. I still haven't gotten the Switch because it's a lot to spend when I only care about 2 titles.

  • I was holding out for the 4k support.

  • 10" would've been nice. I was holding out for the new switch but I'm not quite sure if I'll buy this one. The lite I
I've got is neat and cheap, but I need glasses to even see anything. I doubt that 7" is that much of an improvement.

  • Am I the only one?

    I own a Wii U though. Am I the only one? :)
