E3 2022 Has Officially Been Canceled (ign.com) 22

After previously canceling its in-person E3 2022 event, the ESA has now informed its partners that there will be no digital event equivalent this year either - meaning E3 2022 has fully been canceled. IGN reports: The news broke via a tweet from Razer PR lead Will Powers, who said that an email had been sent out announcing the cancellation of a digital E3 event. IGN has independently verified the contents of the email as well. The ESA had initially planned for an in-person E3 event this year after having no event in 2020 due to COVID-19 and a digital one in 2021. "We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer," said the Entertainment Software Association in an official statement to IGN. "Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience."

"We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023."

And nothing of value was lost.

Where will I not watch a giant barrage of stage presentations where fake crowds fill the front rows and clap as an ego surfing Todd Howard or similar shows up to blather on forever before showing a trailer I could just catch on youtube now?!?
    • It's an industry trade-show. Industries put those on because they have value for industry and its members. Whether or not it has any value for you or me is irrelevant, we aren't trying to sell our product to retailers or partner with developers.
  • Seems the event has lost most the luster it had in the 90's. Has been sparsely mentioned on here since it was mired in controversy for a data breach years ago. Why even bother targeting for next year?
    • It used to focus a bit more on the consumer segment back in the day. I know it's always been an "industry" trade show, but it exploded in popularity for a time because of announcements and content leaks.

Years back they tried bringing it back to an industry show. Not sure how much value this brings to people in the industry if any in the past few years.

  • So ... Why was it canceled?

  • Easy to see a combination of the console makers and the big studios preferring to do their own events.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all do large reveals now where publishers take advantage. On the other end PAX seems to be the place for smaller and indie devs to show their wares and events like GDC and software tool conferences are where industry folk would rather convene and talk shop. Nevermind the crossover with Comic con and other general fan events.

Throw covid on top of things and E3 is just the odd m

  • From thhe statement "the 2023 showcase will bring the community ... together in an all-new format and interactive experience", I'm guessing they are developing said format/experience for 2023, but it could be they wanted to use it this year as well and simply did not get it ready in time.
  • The pandemic is over, so why cancel an event later this year?
  • E3 was just a party essentially, a place to use company dollars to have fun and promote their stuff. Engineers probably couldn't attend either, cause, you know, schedules and stuff
