Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Prices Outside the US Citing Economic Challenges (techcrunch.com) 26

Sony has raised the price of PlayStation 5 in most major markets, citing "challenging economic conditions" such as high global inflation rates and adverse currency trends, the latest in a series of challenges engulfing the current generation gaming console. From a report: The new price, which largely varies between $30 to $80, goes immediately into effect in Europe, the UK, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada, the company said in a blog post. The revised price will hit Japan on September 15, said the Japanese conglomerate. The U.S. is not impacted by the price hike, the company confirmed. "While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE's business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what's still to come," Sony said in the post.

  • I always thought it was odd that Sony didn't raise the price of the PS5 to take part of the cut scalpers were getting. I know the margins in the scalping game have been going down, but it's been almost 2 years now.

The new price is between $30 and $80? Damn, that's a good deal. Worth driving to Canada for.

    • Reading is fundamental.

It says the variance is between $30 and $80, not that the new price IS between $30 and $80.

No, it literally said exactly what I quoted in the slashdot summary. And if you check the history of that URL on archive.org, the linked article also originally said the same thing slashdot quoted. The article was updated at 17:14 UTC today to add the word "more" so that it now say it the new price was "$30 to $80 more" rather than ""$30 to $80".

So while reading IS fundamental, it seems you are the one that did not properly read what it literally said (you properly interpreted what it was supposed to mean, but not what it actually said). More importantly, writing (and proper editing) is also fundamental.

Isn't Sony Entertainment a Japanese company? Aren't their consoles made in China? Why is it the U.S.A. being spared from the price hike? Computers and consoles are already more expensive in other countries, this will only make it worst.

Because the Euro and Yen have tanked compared to the dollar since the PS5 came out.

Don't worry, the US wont be far behind.

The price hike I mean, not a currency tanking, wouldn't wish that upon them (the USD isn't exactly strong at the moment to begin with).

Sony moved pretty much everything Playstation to the US just prior to this generation, and it's now effectively the home-market, plus the one where they aren't generally out-performing MS/Xbox

  • So, Facebook require tracking and Sony are trying to scalp us.
Which other VR system should I buy now?
    • Is none an option?

      • None has been my choice so far, but I still believe it's the future of entertainment and with the right software I think it could be amazing - Imagine exploring alien spaceships and working out their tech ! Or even just (just!) watching Spacex's Starship launch from right next to the engines.

But maybe it's still too soon.
    • Valve Index.
      • That's three year old tech, so much lower resolution than modern systems ?

Plus, as I understand it, the newer systems will have tech to prevent motion sickness that the older systems need but won't get ?
      • Yes, but no. There's quite a lot of leaks and rumours circulating right now that Valve's new headset, codenamed "Deckard", is right around the corner.

  • Just checked my local price comparator, it goes for over 800â at any retailer, so 549 euros would be quite a nice price drop ...
