Microsoft Argues Nintendo Offers a 'Broader Range of Mature Content' than Xbox (nintendoeverything.com) 30

An anonymous reader shares a report: According to Microsoft, Nintendo "offers a broader range of mature content than Xbox." Microsoft's statements came about as part of its response to the UK CMA about wanting to buy Activision. Despite some claiming that Nintendo is more family-friendly, Switch in particular has proven otherwise. Microsoft highlighted the Nintendo-published Bayonetta 3, the console-exclusive Shin Megami Tensei V, and other third-party titles such as The Witcher 3 and NieR: Automata. Ultimately Microsoft is looking to prove that Nintendo is as much a competitor as Sony is with PlayStation, and was looking to provide "evidence that Nintendo Switch is not just a console aimed at the family friendly customer segment but more broadly at a diverse group of gamers across all demographics."

Microsoft Argues Nintendo Offers a 'Broader Range of Mature Content' than Xbox

  • Nintendo operates in a completely different space. They make low end game consoles and a completely different gaming experience. Sony and Microsoft compete for the high end and luxury end. I can go out right now and spend $200 on a gamepad for either the PlayStation or the xbox. There really isn't an equivalent for the switch because who's going to spend that kind of money to play a little better in Splatoon

PC gamers are snickering at your "high end, luxury" gaming experience.

      • Check the Steam Hardware Survey sometime, you'll see that most PC gaming isn't quite as luxury as you think it is.

        https://store.steampowered.com... [steampowered.com]

        • Ouch, I definitely waited too long to sell my second 950, used prices are down like 15% since I bought my 1070. It's a PNY so I wanted to be sure it would actually be solid :)

      • PC gaming elitism is sad like those kids in the Arby's parking lot with car club stickers in their windows. With the same dumb neon lights even.

It was a better time in the 90's, or keeping with the car analogy, the bootlegging days.

I'm sorry if you missed out that, but PC gaming today, well... lol. Sorry.

Selling PC as "the end all platform" is kinda missing the point of the PC
It's the freedom of the platform that is the biggest gain you get from it. sure, you can spend a lot and make a PC that trounce a future PS5 pro, or you can deliberately get an Alliance AT3D videocard to have the worst possible 3D accelerated gaming experience ever put to silicon.
Or you can make your own games, or modify existing games to fit your needs, or run games that the game companies seem to want buried forever.

        • It may be missing the point of the PC, but it is core to the point of gaming. Console players often site several reasons for their superiority / preference. Can you add to this list?

          - Controller based games work differently. - Indeed they do. Which is why I play those games on my PC with an Xbox controller.
          - Living room based games. - Yep the plug and play experience of the box is good, but my TV natively supports Steamlink, so I actually play a lot of games in my living room from the PC in the same way I u

None of those points require an very expensive machine that beat the consoles in power etc.. the whole "PC Master race" thing.
Two of your three points come from the flexibility of the platform, that actually makes it be able to compete with the switch as well, with platforms such as the steam deck, or just using steam link with a celphone properly equipped with a decent joystick.

        • Not to mention emulating (often at higher framerates/resolutions and with save states, etc.) all the consoles you missed along the way, up to a pretty recent point.

This is just amusing to read, as until the Switch, Nintendo's primary design goal was to offer better controllers than everyone else. From inventing the dpad, shoulder buttons, analog sticks, motion controls, etc, they've been leading the way. It was always better controllers driving their new system designs, with graphics improvements being a distant second.

Also, have you ever actually played Splatoon? Use a pro controller with gyro aiming gives you get way better control than you can get out of an Xbox co

      • That is completely missing the point.

Microsoft is desperate to find someone else to include on it's list of "I'm not a Monopoly, see!" companies it "competes" with. They don't care who, just as long as they can add them to the list to present to an investigator. The reason why Microsoft is that desperate is because they are under multiple probes and investigations worldwide for Antitrust in the video game industry.

Microsoft's use of Nintendo is a red herring at best. Nintendo's primary offerings are on

Nintendo did NOT invent analog sticks and motion controls.

No, they're just responsible for making them a mainstream part of gaming.

'Mature content' ??? .... Microsoft is claiming that Nintendo has more porn?

    Nintendo it is then ....

    • by cs96and ( 896123 )

Have you seen some of the weird shit available on the Nintendo e-store? Admittedly this is third party content, but Microsoft said "offers a broader range of mature content than Xbox", not "offers a broader range of mature content than Microsoft".

  • PC has the greatest variety of games and the most and varied variety of mature content.
Not allowed porn on consoles. Can on PC. +1 for PC
  • ..since much of the "mature content" microsoft publishes lately seems to be focused on getting teenagers to join the military.

A decade ago, this would be nonsensical. It sounds nonsensical because most of us have not updated our view of Nintendo since the 80s. However, as shocking as it may be, Nintendo has allowed the racier content on their systems more than Sony and MS have on their systems in recent years. It was Sony's censorus ass that cause Devil May Cry to have lens flare censor bars. Not Nintendo, not MS, and not Steam. Just Sony.
    • These days, Steam (which pretty much IS PC gaming these days) has a rather inconsistent and arbitrary policy as well. This is the downside of curated stores. It's convenient as hell, but it gives the curator a lot of power of what is allowed and what is banned, even on a supposedly open platform like the PC.

And let's not forget it's not just about adult content either. Remember the Taiwanese horror game "Devotion" that oh-so-slightly mocked China's great leader? Banned from Steam and GOG in a heartbeat

    • Yep, that ship sailed when Doom was released on the Wii U.

both 41yrs old as I type this. Microsoft Adventure was published in 1979 so the obviously are more mature.
  • "We've done a shit job of delivering content with the many studios we have already acquired, so you don't need to worry about us acquiring this mega-studio"
  • By proving Nintendo is a competitor they've just admitted they'll be locked Actiblizzard stuff out of another competitor but also out of the entire portable space.

It makes approving the take over harder.

    • It really doesn't. ActiBlizz never cared much for Switch anyway. What do they have on there? Couple of Crash Bandicoot games, a couple of "remastered" THPS ports and... Diablo 3?

Nobody is buying a Switch to play ActiBlizz games today. That's not going to change.

  • You can get Postal Redux on Switch. You'll soon be able to get Postal 4 on PS4 and PS5.

You can't get any of them on Microsoft. They won't put them on GamePass.

I mean Microsoft is right...both platforms do offer a wider range of content.

Some people only open up to tell you that they're closed.

Working...
