Steam Reaches 10 Million Concurrent In-Game Players for the First Time (ign.com) 22

Alongside reaching 32 million concurrently online users, Steam has also just surpassed 10 million concurrent in-game players for the first time. From a report: The news was shared by SteamDB, and it shows the milestones were reached on Saturday, January 7, where the in-game concurrents were at 10,082,055 million and the concurrently online users -- those who are simply on Steam but not necessarily playing a game -- were at 32,186,301. As for what these millions of people were playing, the #1 played game in the past 24 hours as of this writing was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at 1.08 million concurrent players. Sitting behind Counter-Strike were DOTA 2 (766,096), Goose Goose Duck (605,694), PUBG: Battlegrounds (439,944), and Apex Legends (367,585).

    I know a lot of people enjoy bashing Steam. That said, I just got a new PC and installed Steam for the first time in close to 5 years. It was great having my library there without finding discs or cd codes along with my saves.

    The fact that the games I wanted to play at the moment (Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4) also work in linux, is a great bonus as well. the hardest part was getting the nexus mod manager working but that's outside of Steam's control.

    • I think many older people miss the days when you bought a game, and that was it. Your relationship with the publisher ended then and there. These days, a game is a camera pointed directly at you, sending the publisher a constant stream of data about your usage of the game (and possibly aspects of your system beyond that). To make matters worse, this information is used to constantly hound with you with ads and seek other means of bilking even more money out of you, plus as a bonus the publisher can just

      • There's also GOG, which is all DRM free. Doesn't have all of the AAAs but actually has a big chunk of them, and a lot of AA games, older games (for when your CD/DVDs dont work), etc. The surprise of the last couple of months is that Skyrim showed up there, and the mods work.

    • The really weird bit at this point is that some of the older games actually run better on Linux than on Windows...

  • Sorry, can't talk, too busy trying to keep the Nameless One alive in Sigil on my new steam deck, keymappings take some getting used to, but the addition of touchscreen is nice.

If all else fails, lower your standards.
