Counter-Strike 2 Confirmed For Summer 2023 Release, Limited Test Begins Today (gamespot.com) 41

Valve just announced that Counter-Strike 2, made in Source Engine 2, will be released in Summer 2023. From a report: Accompanying the announcement, Valve also released three videos teasing what to expect in the Counter-Strike's massive and transformative update. Leveling up the World shows off the upgraded maps and overhauls, Moving Beyond Tick Rate announces that tick rate will no longer matter (moving and shooting will be "equally responsive"), and Responsive Smokes details the new "dynamic volumetric" nature of smoke grenades.

Hell, I'd be happy if they released HL2 Ep3. I still don't understand why they killed this franchise, they had to be making money on it.
      • We could (and probably will) have a whole Slashdot article on it.

I don't think it's dead. Half-life Alyx was incredibly well done and a great half-life game. What's unfortunate is the really good games often take a long time to get released, because markets change, new ideas come out, so they script some things, sometimes even starting over to get it "right" so to speak.

What was a good idea and great system may change if another game releases with a similar concept, or new hardware comes out that makes new things they wanted available that they couldn't do before, adding

Maybe they're worried about following in the footsteps of Duke Nukem Forever.

        • This is probably the most accurate thing combined with the Valve work philosophy of "people work on what they want".

The legend of Half Life 3 in peoples minds has exceeded anything the game could ever hope to be now.

Because it's obvious that the "3" key on Valve's computers doesn't work. So anything that requires a "3" can't be done at Valve.

At least if you're a programmer you can usually get around this by doing things like "1+2" and such, but Half Life 2 Episode 1+2 doesn't quite work. Or Half Life 1+2. Maybe HL2 E4-1? Or Half Life 4-1?

They didn't intentionally kill it, the problem was Steam was too successful so they have too little pressure to create. This is combined with Valve's flat+clique structure that for various reasons makes eating this kind of game kinda hard.

Counter-Strike ruined everything. Actually there were a number of Counter-Strike-like mods that came out first but the trend was set: "Realistic" games that take no skill took over and actual fun games that require skill like Quake and Unreal Tournament fell by the wayside and are all but gone nowadays.

Counter-Strike sucks. It lets a n00b take down even the best players in the world. Fun for the n00b, boring for the experienced player. Kids today don't even know what fun is.

Some people love their realistic weapons in a shooter. Personally I cant stand them either though as to me realistic guns is just code for a bunch of guns with very little variety. I'd much rather play a shooter with a large variety of crazy, over the top guns that actually have real meaningful differences in terms of usage as opposed to 5 different types of submachine gun for instance which adds nothing in terms of variety for me.

Most recently Gunfire Reborn scratched that itch for me if you're looking for

      • Something that had the weapons of Unreal, Duke Nukem, Doom, CyberMage, Blood, ROTT, and other older FPS games which were designed for fun, not realism.

Graven came to mind as a game that echos of Hexen/Heretic, and something more interesting than scrambling for the sniper rifle or rocket launcher in every map. Something that is fun... may not be precisely balanced... but in this game environment... who cares? If one wants e-sports, there is always OW/OW2, CoD and other games that someone can go "pwn the n

When this genre was fresh, I used to play the UT mod Tactical Ops. It featured very few weapons, but they were different for each side. You could pick up drops from the other side and keep them until you, uh, lost them. Each side had weapons which did more or less the same jobs, but also had some weapons which were superior, and some which were inferior.

    • Obviously the audience disagrees since CounterStrike has sat upon the high-skill-FPS throne for a long time now.

Also which Quake? Quake1? 2? Arena?

Which Unreal tournament? Classic? 2003? When was the last one even released? Unreal is no longer a gaming franchise but but an engine and development environment now.

Quake and UT have been dead for a looooong time grandpa.

It's almost like it's a game that has a core focus on team effort... plenty of times i've seen someone at, say, 17 and 0, but they're on the losing side because they don't actually support the team in achieving the objectives...
      • Those are fucking children. I hate them. They fucking trash objective/team modes in each game they are in. CS. CoD. Halo. You name it.

For a bunch of games rated 'M', I do hear a lot of tiny mother fuckers whose balls haven't dropped yet.
    • require skill like Quake and Unreal Tournament

Yesyesyes. Skillz. Like pick up rocket launcher. Shoot rocket launcher at others feet. High ceiling level there.

It was probably 20 years ago that I played this game on Windows PC. I loved the game but quickly ditched it because there were just way too many cheaters.

    • Agreed, but there's no denying that Counter Strike is one of the most popular PC games on the planet in terms of continuous player count. Every kid playing that is a kid not playing Fortnite on their mobile phone.

  • will the cheating still be rampant?
