Microsoft Seems To Think We're Getting a PS5 Slim This Year (theverge.com) 29

Microsoft thinks we're getting a PS5 Slim model later this year that might be priced at $399.99. From a report: The software giant is currently waiting a ruling in the FTC v. Microsoft hearing and as part of the case Microsoft has filed documents which reveal it thinks a PS5 Slim is on the way "later this year." Here's exactly what Microsoft says: "PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point."

I want to buy a PS5 and have held off once I heard rumors of a slim version. I travel with my XBox Series X. It is TOUGH getting it safely in luggage. The PS5 design is pretty much impossible to travel with. I tried accepting the switch, but the graphics and games really do suck too much for me to get over. I have limited time to play games, therefore I want good ones....also the few good games on the switch are first party and VERY expensive, so it costs more to get a switch with 3 games than it presently does to get a PS5 with God of War.

The damn thing is huge. When I first pulled mine out of the box I was amazed how big the damn thing was.

        • It does tend to stretch the definition of a "portable" gaming system. While yes, it is portable, on the other hand, it's huge and not "easily throw in my bag" portable.
          • The nintendo switch is not exactly small either.

We re just seeing a resurgence in "Sega GameGear" sized handhelds is all.

Much like back then, when the issue was "How do we cram several hours of battery into a portable" in the 90s, the issue now is "How do we cram AAA game processing power into something more or less portable?"

When we end up with 2nm process silicon on everything and "its all hyper embedded in a single SoC", then you will have your petite version of the SteamDeck.

            But not before.

            • "How do we cram AAA game processing power into something more or less portable?"

Apple could certainly pull it off with their M2 chips, but they haven't shown much interest in producing anything resembling a traditional gaming console, and AAA developer support is presently a joke.

            • I dont know, the PS Vita managed to cram "AAA game processing power" into a portable with several hours of battery. And it isnt huge.

I think the OP was implying that during the console's heyday it could play current titles.

Hardware certainly exists to do the same thing today without all the chonkiness of the Steam Deck. Apple's M2 comes to mind, but some mod with an axe to grind against Apple dinged me for mentioning it earlier. Basically, you'd have to be in a position to wield significant influence over game developers to get them to port to your platform. That works if your name is Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft, and not so much if y

                • The PS Vita came out in 2011, and when it came out, it had power, small form factor, and a good battery life.
                • All in 2011, or are you just trolling?

        Steam Deck?

Works fine for Xbox games (since Microsoft has been putting most out on PC - I'm not sure if there are many exclusives that are Xbox console only), not so much for PlayStation games. I mean, you can't get FF16 on it, or God of War Ragnarok.

We got a PS5 as a gift for our nephew, and had to fly with it. I was really surprised at just how big they made it; we couldn't even fit it into our 32" duffle bag with the box. He takes it between his mom's and dad's homes, so the size of lugging it does become an issue.

      • Yeah, it's definitely a large and odd shaped device. And loud too.

I think they could easily remove the plastic parts that extend past the main chassis.
And make the disc drive an add-on / bundle and save even more volume. Ending up with one SKU (digital) with a disc drive drive accessory.
They already pulled off a smart move by allowing commodity SSD upgrades... as the prices of these are falling fast.

    • This is when you pick up a Series S, and possibly even a monitor that attaches to it.

    • The last time I lugged a full-size console around for travel was when I was a child and the console was a NES.

These days I'm content to play games on my smartphone, but if I really wanted to play AAA titles on the go, I'd snag a gaming laptop. That being said, AMD's igpu on my "business laptop" is actually pretty passable for casual play on low settings. So much for getting work done.

    • First world problems eh?

Seriously, who takes an Xbox or playstation on holiday with them? Get a life. And no, you cant use the kids an excuse, they're quite happy on touch devices.

        > Seriously, who takes an Xbox or playstation on holiday with them?

Most people who travel with a console are either military, military contractors, or people who make a habit of getting into 1-3 month consulting engagements in the private sector. College students often fit into the category, too. It's a use case that's important to a few percent of users. Of course, it's not as important as fitting into a small entertainment center, which greatly increases the appeal to 30%+ of people.

        > Get a life

Hmm, you're quick to react, but clearly didn't spend much time thinking about your reaction. Is it unfathomable that someone would play with someone else? Also, travel doesn't necessarily mean holiday. I travel for work. Since I can work remotely, we spend several weeks at relative's houses, especially my in-laws. Spend 3 weeks with relatives and you run out of things to do in someone else's house, especially on rainy days. With 16h per day, I can only make so much small talk with my in-laws. Even if

        • I wouldn't worry about what other people think so much. From my point of view, traveling with a console is certainly very strange, but spending weeks at a relatives house is also.
If there is one thing you'll find a lot of on the internet, it's people criticizing someone else's lifestyle. From the kind of car they drive, if any at all, to the kind of city they live in, if any at all. People, for some reason just really want to tell each other how to live, and they are all certain that they are the ones doin
        • If you're going to live somewhere for weeks then you'll be taking boxes as well as luggage so the size doesnt matter much so I call BS on your post. Also if your relatives dont already have a console maybe they dont want one and actually roll their eyes when you rock up with your games.

Wow, that's some proud mix of ignorance and arrogance you display there. So my kid's grandparents don't own a console, therefore they are rolling their eyes that we brought one? Yup...that's the gold standard. Everyone over 70 either HATES the notion of a family playing video games or owns a PS5!!!!

I'm guessing you've never had a job that required you to travel? When you go on a client site, you get put in a hotel. You don't usually mail boxes. You stay at a hotel from M-Thurs and fly home on wee

Whatever side you are on, the court case was interesting to say the least.

We have so many spilled beans, both from Microsoft and Sony sides it is illuminating for us outsiders to see how the industry actually works. Bonus: SEGA leaks how Sony overspent them into extinction in the console hardware space: https://www.tweaktown.com/news... [tweaktown.com] (Yes, they were bullies back in the day).

Anyway, I would have welcomed a more open industry, instead of backroom deals, backstabbing, and overall cutthroat markets.

(On the PS5 slim: this is welcome news, and maybe a bit late. Mine is yuge and takes a lot of room. If there was an option, I would trade that for a smaller, cooler model).

    • Not saying Sony is an angel, but Sega just fucked up. The Saturn was a weaker 3D hardware than the PS, too expensive to produce, and more difficult to develop for. And the way they rushed the American launch, angering several retailers and giving Sony a perfect chance to undercut them, was ludicrous.

      • by stikves ( 127823 )

Yep, SEGA's offering was weak and it showed. But weak consoles usually thrive. So, that was not the only problem. SEGA had other mistakes as well.

Sony? They took advantage of it to curb stomp them. Having earlier access to CD-ROMs also helped. But they also went and shopped exclusives to suffocate SEGA's console. Without access to games like Final Fantasy, they were dead in the water.

Not that SEGA were saints either. They wanted to kill off Sony using exclusives. The only problem was Sony was much better eq
