Freeciv 3D In the Browser Now Ready! (fciv.net) 31
Long-time Slashdot reader Andreas(R) has an announcement:
Freeciv 3D in the browser is now ready to be played by everyone on FCIV.NET! This is a version of the classic strategy game Freeciv.
The game is open source with an AGPL license, and has been in development since 2016. Freeciv 3D has the same goal as Lichess and other open source web games: creating an accessible platform for Freeciv players of all levels.
Freeciv 3D for the web has been in development for many years, and now we think the game is ready!
It's 2023, and the game now has a window where you can pose questions to ChatGPT.

Arrow keys (Score:1)
Why are the arrow keys rotated 45 degrees in square cell mode? ie up is move up-left, top right is move up, center right is move up right, etc?
I can't play it for that alone.

Thanks for the feedback, we will fix this. The arrow keys direction are still set in the directions for the isometric 2D version, and should be updated for the new 3D map view.

A fix for this is now available on the live server, we try to be very quick to fix bugs which are reported. Thank you for reporting this!
Tried it (Score:3)
Couldn't figure out how to move my settler. Click on him, clicked on target tile, doesn't move. Right clicked and set Autosettle, no effect, did autoworker, makes a worker who promptly ran off for some reason. Now when I click, does not select the settler but shows the context menu as if I had right clicked.
This is why I don't play open source games.

Sure, we can make right click have a default action, for example move. Thank you for reporting!

Actually right click is for the context menu. Better do left.

Drag the settler to the target. You should see a path drawn.
And use the "End Turn" button at the top to commit.

Freeciv in particular has a really terrible interface, even in the normal desktop GUI app.
It's not surprising if it's even worse in a browser.
The only other game I'm familiar with that has players which has such a terrible interface is OpenTTD. I think their excuse is that the original has a bad interface too, but I'm not sure what the Freeciv folks' is.
