Xbox Cloud Gaming Is Now Available On Meta's Quest VR Headsets (theverge.com) 5

A beta version of the Xbox Cloud Gaming app is now available for the Meta Quest headsets, allowing you to stream hundreds of Xbox games with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The Verge reports: The beta app is available from the Meta Quest Store, and you'll simply need to pair a supported Bluetooth controller to start playing. You can use an Xbox controller (that supports Bluetooth), a PS4 one, or even Nintendo's Switch Pro controllers. Support for PS5 controllers is "coming in the future," according to Meta.

There are a variety of display sizes for an immersive VR environment to stream Xbox games in or even an Xbox-themed virtual space on the latest Quest 3 and Pro headsets that takes advantage of full-color passthrough.

  • Why do you need a controller at all? What's wrong with the quest controllers? They've got all the same buttons as an xbox one, except maybe the settings one.
    • Thats a damn good question and I'd be curious to know the answer, although perhaps its just that the controllers aren't an intuitive match even if they are a functional one?

Then again I'm not sure streaming games to a headeset is an intuitive one either. Oh it might work ok for slower paced games (I'd wager BG3 which is comprehensively non reflex based. "Chess with wizards" is how I'd describe its combat, would be fine. Fortnite, not so much)

      Not enough buttons most likely.

The Meta Quest has two controllers with two face button, one trigger, and one analog stick, each.
The console controllers (Xbox, PS, Nintendo, all of which seem to be supported) has four face buttons (+), two triggers (+), two rear buttons (-), two analog sticks (+), and one dpad (-). So ~30% is missing there (of course VR controllers has extras, like 6-dof motion tracking, but that cannot easily be mapped).

Anyway, basically they are doing the easiest path for compatibility. I

They do not. They are missing the D-pad, and the Meta button can't be substituted for the menu button on the Xbox controller as it is perma-mapped to a function in the OS, yes it still triggers, but it kicks you out of the game in the process.

So ultimately you're 5 buttons short.

      • Ah yes, that would be it. Not the end of the world of course to just pair an xbox controller, I was really curious, but forgot about the dpad.

Computer programmers do it byte by byte.
