Pokemon Company Says It Intends To Investigate Palworld 47

The Pokemon Company said Thursday it has not granted any permission to "another company," referring to viral new game Palworld-developer Pocketpair, to use Pokemon intellectual property or assets and "intends to investigate and take appropriate measures" against the fast-growing survival game operator. From a report: The statement is Pokemon Company's first acknowledgement of Palworld's fast-growing survival title, which has sold over 8 million copies in less than six days, exceeding the performance of even the most popular AAA titles. But as TechCrunch previously reported, Palworld is also attracting a growing number of fans of Japan's legendary firm over perceived plagiarism and uncanny resemblance. However, its fusion of monster collecting, automation, and survival/crafting mechanics has struck a chord with players nonetheless.

The bigger problem is mods coming out to put Pokemon characters into Palworld, that's what has Pokemon Company / Nintendo up in arms right now.

    • Which is in turn not a problem for Palworld, since they aren't making or distributing the mods.

I saw that Nexusmods preemptively banned any Pokemon mods, smart guys there.

I can honestly say I've never paid for a Pokemon product, the games seem OK as games go but I'm not willing to fund Nintendo's lawsuit happiness.

The first game, ironically, was the best. If you didn’t play it on GameBoy, Let’s Go Pikachu is the same game but prettier.

After that, Pokemon Go was good, and Legends Arceus was innovative, but literally every other game was an increasingly inferior copy of Red and Blue, and are mostly generally skippable.

And that particular mod got hit with a Cease & Desist letter within 8 hours of being shown on Youtube.

Meanwhile I put Palworld on my Steam Wishlist about a year ago and completely forgot about it in the meantime. If Nintendo/TPC did not investigate the game that got described by hopeful fans as "Pokemon - With Guns!" then they really dropped the (poke)ball years ago.

My interpretation of TPC's statement was less "we're going to investigate Palworld" and more "please stop emailing us about Palworld."

Not at all. "We're going to investigate Palworld" is smartspeak for "Hey guys, I set up a private server. Usual password, see ya there. Bring guns."

So, one thing I see missing from the comments section here is the discussion of stolen assets. I get that Pokemon are based off of everyday objects, but there seems to be implications that some parts of a 3d models and textures in PalWorld might have been ripped directly from a Pokemon game and then cobbled together. That's what the Pokemon Company is investigating.

If games cant make creatures and monsters that are reminisent of other games the industry would grind to a halt pretty quick.

i've seen so many posts comparing the palworld model to the pokemon one, yes they're similar, but they're deffinitely different enough to say they didnt rip the model then change it.

I'm glad i bought pal world to fund the fight against the litigeous crap heap that is nintendo now

  • This game seems like pokemon met valheim and bred Jormungax and Fenrol who combined for Ragnipok, the LoL of times.

  • ..On slavery and cock fighting. Numerous other games have introduced these elements into their games. I remember when World of Warcraft did it back in MOP days over a decade ago.

Simply making a clone of a popular game isn't illegal. If that were the case, we wouldn't even have modern video games at all.

So sorry Nintendo but anyone can make a game where the main protagonist goes around beating up monsters, enslaving them, then finding other players who have beat up monsters and enslaved them, forcing them to

  • CEO tweeted ( Xed? ) about using AI to generate ripoff pokemon, called them fakemon. This company is releasing another game this year that is an AI generated ripoff of Hollow Knight.
  • It is a low quality game that has some creatures that look to be from a game series that if you are playing past middle school, you should be arrested for grooming.

It is not worth all the hype.
  • Looks like your players would have chosen you, but you were very busy telling them what they wanted because you know best!
Now someone arrived with what you should have fucking made in the first place and you don't want them raising the bar by putting out a fun to play game so it's likely that they will get sued out of existence so they can go back to making a bit of money while they sleep, maybe make Pokémon xenon and radium or something simple and iterative.

  • "Oh look, a roster update. What a compelling reason to buy this game instead of just playing the one I already have. What's that? This one has micro transactions?"

At least Pokemon GO gave people a reason to get off their asses and socialize in my small community where bars and churches used to be the only gathering spots. That was actually cool. Universal appeal across generations and all walks of life.

One would hope Nintendo could see the value in being able to gear Pokemon more toward children, rather tha

  • or trademarked. What can be copyrighted or trademarked is representation, e.g. pikachu the creature picture/model, or "pikachu" the name. If palworld used model from pokemon (which would be terminaly stupid) they would have a ground to sue for copyright infringement. If they had called in any place their pal "pokemon" same with trademark. But if they did neither , then they are 100% safe. This was not the first pokemon-like Indy game e.g. temtem.

To see anotehr example of this : look at DnD 3.5 and Paizo/P
