Nintendo Switch 2 Will Now Launch in 2025, Reports Say (videogameschronicle.com) 34

VGC: Nintendo's next console could launch later than expected, in early 2025, it's claimed. That's according to Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, who claims in a new OX do Controle video that he received the information from five separate sources. According to the sources, they are also working on games targeting Q1 2025, to launch alongside the console itself, which has internally slipped out of a previous 2024 target.

Eurogamer reports it's heard "similar whispers" from industry sources this week, though has not been able to concretely substantiate them. Previously, VGC reported that Nintendo was targeting a launch for its next console in late 2024, per development sources. This was later supported by other outlets.

  • for Nintendo, it will most likely be the "New!" Switch 2DUXL LIGHT-S and come in 35 variants

It seems like console generations are not the clean cut-offs they used to be. Many games come out for the current and last generation, so e.g. you can play them on PS5 or on PS4 with reduced graphical quality.

I'm hoping that Nintendo go that route, because for the sort of games I play (2D platformers) the extra power is unlikely to make any meaningful difference. I just want to try the new Mario game, or Mario Maker 3 if they ever give us that.

  • Nintendo no longer develops in the open like they did in the 90s-2000s with project ultra 64 and dolphin which had multiple tech demos before their release, they now prefer to use an Apple-Disneyesque technique of keeping it all under wraps and most "leakers" are full of clickbait.. See Metroid Prime 4 as an example of what happens when you announce too early.
    • I missed the metroid prime 4 thing so what happened there?

It was basically announced at the beginning of the Nintendo Switch's lifespan and has been then stuck in development for 7 years, with rumors of whether it will be cancelled or will come out for the next console instead. Nintendo basically left Metroid to flounder which already had been impacted by Nintendo's takedown of Metroid fan games.

It is because it isn't cutesy and marketable. Which is why the series has rotted.
It is sad too. No game every does the Metroid part of Metroidvania does it right but Metroid does.

Not really correct. The game was developed by one of Nintendos partner studios. However, when Nintendo saw the game they did not like it. They scrapped the original game and have given it to someone else to develop. The main consequence is that it is very late. I think it will launch on Switch but could be after the new console is launched and would then be on both (as was BOTW).
  • I got one for Ring Fit Adventure and it's just nowhere near as fun as Wii Fit was, and it's not as good a workout as I can get from VR games like Pistol Whip or Dance Dash either. The only worthwhile experience I had on it was Super Mario Odyssey. Every cross-platform game I got on it thinking I'd play it hand-held I wish I got on Steam instead.

I did at least like the split ergonomics of the joycons, shame there's no real D-pad.

  • If it manages another 16 million units sold then the Switch becomes the best selling console ever, which is crazy. I was skeptical of the Switch and the hybrid concept (And I owned a freaking WiiU) but man was I wrong. Incredibly ballsy move by Nintendo.
  • Small child was asking for a switch for over a year. I resisted for philosophical reasons (didn't want another screen in the house) and because it is old tech and I knew a new one would "be out soon". Mid 2023, I decided that since I will be dead soon, I would get him one for his Feb 2024 birthday (8 years old). Then I found out that "dead soon" is a lot sooner than I thought and that I would get him one for XMAS, knowing that as soon as I did, a new one would be announced.

Glad that it seems like they will

  • Brought to you by the same "gaming journalism" ecosystem that was until very recently breathlessly telling us that the XBox division was gutting hardware, porting far and wide all of its exclusives and in total disarray until... *checks notes* MSFT clarified with *cough*BULLSHIT*cough* to all of it.

  • I prefer the Hario Switch.
I've never had a good cup of coffee from the Nintendo version.
