Warner Bros. Issues DMCA's After 'Suicide Squad' Game Cracked to Allow Playing as Unreleased Characters (kotaku.com) 16

"It appears the live-service shooter Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is, once again, suffering from a hacker problem," reports Kotaku: Instead of doing absolutely absurd amounts of damage, this time hackers have figured out how to gain access to unreleased characters and skins. And publisher WB Games is reportedly issuing DMCA takedown notices against any assets that have found their way online.

As reported by IGN, one hacker discovered how to play as Deathstroke, one of the four characters developer Rocksteady Studios teased for an upcoming Suicide Squad season... There were also unreleased skins for The Joker and King Shark that folks have somehow accessed, all of which began circulating on Reddit and X/Twitter on April 4.

Not long after, the assets were removed, with folks believing WB Games was behind the strikes. YouTuber TrixRidiculous, who primarily covers DC- and Marvel-related RPGs, had their posts on X/Twitter swiftly taken down by a DMCA strike."I posted three pics to Twitter," TrixRidiculous told Kotaku over email. "Within probably 30 minutes, I received a DMCA strike from WB Games [Kotaku saw a screenshot of this notice]. Please just bring attention to the fact that the leaderboard is riddled with hackers/cheaters that have gone unbanned since launch, as that's all I was trying to do anyway."

This sentiment is shared across the game's official subreddit, with folks posting about "losing interest" in Suicide Squad due to hackers flooding the leaderboards.

    People are losing interest due to hackers? I thought people lost interest due to it being a painfully boring grinding shitshow of a game that would barely be worth it if it were released for free. For the record there are 849 concurrent players on Steam (past 24 hour peak), and this only two weeks after Season 1 came out.

    There's twice as many people playing Command and Conquer right now, a 29 year old game. Ok well a remaster of it so it runs on modern machines, but fundamentally still a 29 year old game.

    • To be clear, its a 4 year old remaster. Heres another one. Dwarf Fortress, a game thats almost as old as D&D, written by one guy (with some creative contributions by his brother) has 1200 ingame.

      Thats one guy, self funded (Until a few years ago when the steam release made him independently wealthy, few are more deserving), outperforming a multinational company with thousands (tens to perhaps even hundreds of thousands if you count the entire warner brothers machine) of employees.

        More like the multinational company just wanting to print money without making any effort or taking on any risk. It's not hard for an individual to compete against someone who refuses to budge from the starting line.

        To be clear, I'm not trying to diminish the guy's achievements. I'm just saying it's a poor comparison to make.

          But that is the main problem, isn't it? The big players who actually have the muscles to try new stuff are afraid to do so because they might fail, while the little guy who could stand to lose EVERYTHING if he makes a bet and loses ... makes the bet anyway.

            And then the big guys have a cry about how Baldur's Gate 3 has set unrealistic expectations for gamers.

      IPFS. Except IPFS gateways can censor content, so you'd need to run your own personal IPFS node as well.

    • I doubt it. Remember they have pre-made content for the next few "seasons" of this clusterfuck. It doesn't take much to keep a game like this on life-support (it's not like servers cost a lot of money when only a few hundred people are playing the game.

      They are going to milk this cow until it dies in the field from dehydration.

    Suicide Squad is rubbish and nobody cares what the hell happens to it. Warner Bros deserves this failure and the RockSteady we knew is dead.

    Follow the founders: Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker's new studio is Hundred Star Games and they're hiring all the Rocksteady talent they can.

    This is a well-worn path. Cash out by selling your studio to a big publisher who has no fucking idea how to develop games at all. Watch as your current studio crashes and burns due to the publisher's utter incompetence. Start a new studio elsewhere. Rinse and repeat.

    First, no one cares because it's an absolute shit game. There is nothing good about it. Secondly, it's very inappropriate use of DMCA - not that there are any appropriate uses to begin with. Live service games are a lot of work. You cannot just throw one together and it would be ill-advised for most companies to have multiple live service games going at once. Not until your first live service game is stable and self-sustaining itself, at least. Big publishers think they can pull it off, because the studios
