Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is Coming To Xbox Game Pass On Its Release Day (engadget.com) 15

An anonymous reader shares a report: Just before Microsoft closed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it said that it would take some time to bring the publisher's titles to Game Pass. We've only seen one such addition so far in the form of Diablo IV, but the company has announced another, somewhat notable one. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be available on Game Pass on its release day later this year.

Microsoft is banking on the debut of a new Call of Duty title on its subscription service leading to a significant bump in the number of Game Pass members. It's a bit of a gamble, as for nearly every year in recent memory, the latest Call of Duty release has been the best-selling game. Microsoft is likely to see lower direct sales of Black Ops 6 on Xbox and PC, though it will still generate revenue from Game Pass and the PlayStation version (and perhaps even a Nintendo Switch release), as well as through microtransactions.

  • I used to play Call of Duty a lot. To the point of being that guy who stands outside at Game Stop at midnight for the latest version. The alternating years between Treyarch and Infinity Ward seemed to be a good strategy and each dev group added their own little twist to the action. But at some point, I think it was around Advanced Warfare, it got a little silly with all the new gameplay gimmicks (cough...jetpacks). They tried taming it back down, but I lost interest. Advanced Warfare was Sledghammer (there are 3 studios rotating years although I think they are all "assisting" the other studios on their off years these days). It was their attempt to copy the advanced movement system in Titanfall and they failed on two fronts: A) it wasn't implemented very well and B) average COD players are not well adapted to complex movement systems. The most complex thing most of them do is drop-shot or shotgun-slide.

  • To completely shift the game into a classic live service. I'm not entirely sure what that means in the context of call of duty because I thought they were already doing all the battle pass shenanigans that everyone else was. But I'm sure it'll mean more monetization and more Skinner boxes.

Skins ruined CS for me. Haven't played since CS: Source. Enough of this gambling nonsense!

  • I've been with the CoD franchise for about 20 years now. These days when I want to play I boot up the Xbox, let it update CoD for a half an hour, and then I go to bed. About a month later when I have another chance to play I do another update. So, it makes sense to me to put this on a GamePass since all I ever do is buy it and don't even play.
