Microsoft's White Xbox Series X and 2TB Special-edition Model Launching in October (theverge.com) 23

Microsoft is launching three new Xbox Series S / X console options in October. From a report: There's the $449.99 white discless Xbox Series X, a 2TB "Galaxy Black" special-edition Xbox Series X priced at $599.99, and a $349.99 1TB Xbox Series S. All three models will be available in the US on October 15th, with other markets to follow on October 29th.

The white coating on the exterior of this new discless Xbox Series X matches the "robot white" found on the Xbox Series S, Microsoft's smaller $299 console. While leaks of the white Xbox Series X hinted that Microsoft may upgrade the heatsink used to cool the console, the company hasn't detailed any hardware changes beyond the removal of the disc drive here.

We know from yesterday, that only the ugly people will be buying these gaming consoles....

The "beautiful" people will be out having a life...

  • A different color and they swapped the SSD with a bigger one? I'm mindblown!

  • I am still in the boomers 360 realm. The X box after that sounded line a steam machine an this current one seems to extend that.
    • Consoles are now equivalent to a poorman's low end PC when Sony switched to x86 in the PS4 days. I bailed after the Xbone (Xbox One).

Microsoft has no exclusives on the Xbox that I want to play so why would I pay for a Xbox? I would rather play Forza Horizon on PC.

PS4 / PS5 isn't much better. With modders bringing Bloodborne to Elden Ring via the Graceborne [nexusmods.com] mod I find there is little reason to play PS4 / PS5 games. i.e. Gran Turismo is a simcade and there are far better proper sim racing on PC, etc.

Because you know it will actually work on a $400 Xbox. Whereas, it will probably work on $1000 PC (unless you need a different gpu, and bigger power supply, don't forget more ram. Then it will work. Probably... You don't have an AMD cpu, do you? Those are funny sometimes... Okay, $2000 tops)

Son, I've been building my own rigs for 30+ years. I haven't had any issues with stuff not working. I built 3 Ryzen gaming rigs for my family a few years back, and built three Threadripper systems for my personal programming research & gaming. Aside from one of the Ryzen systems over-heating due to a clogged fan (which a good cleaning solved the instability) everything has been running super well.

The key to building is to follow this plan:

          1. Research,
          2.

          • Annnd here's how to play on console:
            1: Go to Target

Why would anyone want to skip steps 2-5? It's like people don't want to spend more money and spend hours upon hours sussing out hundreds of benchmarks. I just don't understand. It's like they actually expect a game released three years from now to run reasonable well on the same hardware or something...

How do they ever expect to earn the right to call grown people 'son'?
            • > Why would anyone want to skip steps 2-5?

              1. People want a system to do non-gaming tasks. i.e. Work
              2. Mods
              3. People don't want a system that is obsolete in 5 years.

              > spend hours upon hours sussing out hundreds of benchmarks.

              Most gamers DON'T do that.

              > earn the right to call grown people 'son'?

Since it appears English isn't your first language it is a colloquialism that means "I'm old enough to be your father."

              • Since it appears English isn't your first language it is a colloquialism that means "I'm old enough to be your father."

                Oh, that's what it means!
And all this time I thought it was a colloquialism for "I'm an asshole"

                Shows to go you...
    • My Xbone is mostly used as a blu ray player, the new ones can't even do that... and my controller gets used as often on my PC.
  • Does MS really think people are going to drop $600 on this when their current version is already losing badly to the PS5? $600 is a lot for a console, especially for one that's a distant 2nd place in the market. Make more sense to price this at $499 and drop the price on the 1TB model to $399.
    • Given Microsoft's track record (not perfect, but pretty good), I'd say they're just about on target. Also, remember who their customer base is.
    • Yeah, MS is out-of-touch with pricing IMHO.

      1. Those with an Xbox S/X already have one.
      2. Those that don't are already playing on PC.
      3. Worse, there are no Xbox exclusives that you can't already play on PC.
      4. 2 TB is small given how games have bloated up to 100+ GB.

I don't see the market for this incremental upgrade.
