Sony Unveils $700 PlayStation 5 Pro (kotaku.com) 32

Sony has officially revealed the long-rumored mid-generation upgrade model for the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 5 Pro. Set for release on November 7 at a price point of $699.99, the upgraded model, styled like the "slim" PS5 but with a triple groove design, will be available only in an all-digital version compatible with Sony's existing add-on optical drive. The console boasts a larger GPU and faster memory, delivering 45% faster rendering than the base PS5. It also features advanced ray tracing at double or triple the speed and an AI-driven upscaler for improved resolution and clarity.

Several games, including "The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered" and "Horizon Forbidden West," will receive enhanced versions for the PS5 Pro. A new Game Boost feature aims to improve performance across the entire PS5 and backward-compatible PS4 libraries.

The PS5 Pro + disc drive + vertical stand is over $800. That's rich in this economy. I don't see the market for this system being very large.
    • plus sales tax, which starts to become substantial at these price levels.

The market is plenty big when you consider building the PC alternative, apples to apples of course.

Build it and prove otherwise. Theres a whole planet waiting for your $399 pro bargain. I’d account for laziness if I were you. DIY ain’t gonna cut it.

      • I don't know the exact hardware in the PS5, but you can build a pretty good PC for $700 in less than an hour. Console hardware is expected to be subsidized since the games have insane profit margins with kickbacks to Sony. This reeks of cash grab; after all, how else is Sony going to keep increasing profits by 4% annually?

$800 will be paid by 5-10% of hardcore (or sponsored) gamers, which is plenty enough reason to list that price when the other 80% of the buying market will happily stand in line on Black Friday for that $599 “sale” price.

Easiest way to sell overpriced shit, is put it on sale. Ask any woman.

        • Depends if on how you define "pretty good PC". To get a decent Radeon video card these days would be around $300. That leaves $400 for the rest of the console including CPU, RAM, SSD storage, power supply, motherboard, etc. It is doable to get things on sale but it will cost you more than $500 to get the basic components.
      • The machine has to compete with PCs, so it's going to have a hard time. If you spend the same amount on a PC you will get about the same performance, but it's a PC that can run lots of different stuff.

Obviously it really depends on what you want to play most. If what you want is the latest Sony console exclusive, that means you are going to have to have the PS5. But if you want to play something cross-platform, you are probably going to have the best experience on a PC. If your primary goal is to play anyth

It's pretty easy to compete with a hardware that runs no games, no matter how powerful it is.

Go to PC Part Picker, you'll find there are decent entry level builds for $750 odd, a good mid range build is about $1000-1100. If you're spending $1500 on a PC you're well and truly into the high end, the mid range will give you 80% of the performance.

And unlike consoles, the cost of entry into PC gaming is the end of it, no monthly fees to get access to online services, no need to buy extra peripherals (although many are available if one so desires, have a joystick and a racing wheel myself). The whole

Imgur is already flooded with pissy memes about it.

    • Makes the Neo Geo hardware from back in the day at it's launch price look like a Game Boy.

  • There are already almost no PS5-exclusive games that make use of the current systems potential. I don't see any reason to upgrade to something more powerful when the industry is still producing games targeting the PS4 and not taking advantage of the current system.

    • I have to run almost all of my games on âoeperformance modeâ, or my game becomes unpleasantly slow. Iâ(TM)m not one of those âoeanything lower than 60â is unplayable types, either.

Iâ(TM)ve been looking forward to the pro model in the hopes that it will let me play all my current games on graphics mode, but this is a pretty steep price. Iâ(TM)ll probably pass.

  • With Moore's law slowing down as we run out of nanometers, only 45% improvement in 4 years, and having to AI enhance everything CSI style to push out a bit more performance. I expect the PS6 to cost over a $1000 and still have 30fps games.

So the product of four years of Sony's best and brightest minds is a 40% price increase in exchange for a 45% performance increase.
    • I am pretty sure that the performance and price increase on the hardware have very to do with Sony. That is reflective of AMD.
  • I know a lot of people will be trying to break down the doors of GameStop to buy one, but what I wish Sony would do is add Other OS back, so the console can be used as a decent Linux PC, even if the desktop environment is downloaded from PSN. Console hardware is pretty reliable, so something like this would be useful for 3D modeling stuff with something like Fusion 360.

  • I have a PC, it even has a mid-high end GPU. However I do work on that one and it has my personal files on it. Given the invasive nature of modern anti-cheat and the prevalence of Chinese games coming about this isn't my preferred place to run someone else's kernel level code.

"Dual boot!" Not a guaranteed protection. Your drives are still present, and chances are your OS has drivers for all the filesystems, assuming malware even cares about filesystems. Maybe this is too paranoid? But you're only paranoid u

  • Now that Xbox is lost in the forest and Nintendo has carved out a nice niche in the market with their own market share, Sony can be Sony and raise prices because... where else you going to go for your console hit?

Come on Microsoft, upend the market again and give Sony motivation to at least try coming out with something competitive instead of this clear money grab.

  • Quite a ridiculous price. The thing is- they could've done it right. If it had a 4TB drive instead of 2TB, had a disc drive included, and had that performance increase you might've gotten people to bite a lot more at $700. But instead they want to nickle and dime you with a smaller SSD, an addon disc drive, and even a 30 dollar vertical stand. That doesn't include the absolute absurd European prices which are worse than the US ones. Epic fail Sony. At least I hope so because I can't imagine who is thinki
