PlayStation To Continue Focusing on Live Service Games (insider-gaming.com) 24

PlayStation isn't giving up on live service games any time soon. From a report: In a recent interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, PlayStation Co-CEO Herman Hulst said that the company still believes in the model despite recent hiccups like Concord. "The game business is constantly changing due to various factors, including technological advances, new genres and ways of playing," Hulst said via auto translation.

"However, one thing that remains constant is people's desire for great entertainment experiences, and attention to games continues to grow. However, this has also created competition, and like many companies in the industry, we have had to make changes to our business to solidify a more sustainable operating base." Hulst continued by saying PlayStation will "continue to focus on developing live service titles along with the story-driven single-player titles that our players want."

The consumers that like this kind of stuff are going to continue to focus on playing the one game where everyone is (not yours).

  • Concord, 8 years in development, 200 million dollars, and died a month after release is one hellava hiccup!

You may not have been paying attention, this *is* what the customer wants. Live Service games make up the majority of the gaming industry. The most popular game in the world right now - Fortnite - is a live service game. Counter Strike, Apex Legends, League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, or the very first one: World of Warcraft, these represent not only some of the most popular games ever played, or which are currently being played, they also represent the largest amount of revenue brought in the gam

      • Technically, the first one was Ultima Online a solid decade before World of Warcraft, but nothing really put it on the map like World of Warcraft.

      • world of warcraft was not the first one - everquest predated it and there may have been others

Live service games are just multiplayer games where the content is continually updated. Think games like Fortnite and such. They're usually organized into seasons, and a lot of the content is free to play (once you buy the game), with the game making money through add ons and the like (beyond the initial purchase).

They are among some of the top games right now if you follow streamers and such, so technically they are giving customers what they want.

Most other games don't fit in the definition - things like

  • What about those 2-player-on-one-screen games that we can enjoy when our friends visit...? They appear to be missing everywhere these days.

    • Two that immediately come to mind are Kingdom Two Crowns https://www.kingdomthegame.com... >
      and Baldur's Gate 3.

      • Kingdom Two Crowns is great. Not sure Baldur's Gate 3 counts for shared-screen co-op, (it has good co-op I just haven't checked it for shared-screen support personally) but also these several others come to mind right away too which I'm pretty sure all do: Broforce, Super Cane Magic ZERO, For The King, Salt and Sanctuary, Spiritfarer, Unrailed!, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Magicka, Battleblock Theater, The Escapists 2, Streets of Rage 4, Risk of Rain, ...and that's just stuff that's on Steam. Duh. Sony never learns anything from their mistakes. It is literally impossible to have the number of different successful live service games going at the same time that Sony wants.

..which means I don't have time for additional ones. I'm sure they have did the math, but focusing on live service games will result in you getting less of my money. Since I already have a live service game in my toolbox, I'm buying smaller games or games with an ending to balance that out.

Statistics means never having to say you're certain.
