Pokemon Boss Believes Series Can Last Another 50 To 100 Years (bbc.com) 19

The boss of The Pokemon Company believes the series can last for at least another 50 years if it continues to innovate. From a report: First launched on Nintendo's Game Boy in 1996, the video game has expanded into films, TV and toys to become one of the world's highest-grossing media franchise. Most recently, the trading card game based on the cute creatures at the centre of its universe has seen a surge in popularity -- but it has also brought scalpers and frauds to the hobby.

[...] Pokemon has continued to bring new fans to the franchise by expanding into anime, card games, movies and toys alongside its video game titles. CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara says fans now "span several generations" and believes "the biggest reason behind their success is the fact that Pokemon became a tool of communication." Last weekend, about 13,000 Pokemon fans headed to the European leg of the International Championships at London's Excel Centre. It demonstrates Mr Ishihara's point that people have found their way into the series through various means.

    • Hey if it makes you feel better we're going to take the whole rest of the world down with us.

Seriously I do not understand why Europe and Canada and Mexico and frankly every other country for people who are even marginally sane aren't doing everything their power to protect American citizens from Russian propaganda.

If you're not American and you're reading this you need to understand that we have nukes and we are crazy enough to use them. About 35% of us believe Jesus will protect us from your nukes

I'm glad for them that they're successful. Sure, maybe they'll survive 50 or 100 years, I don't know. Maybe the Pokemon Company will be Disney 2.0, how am I supposed to know?

However, my bigger question is... who cares? Of course if you ask the CEO of a company whether they believe they'll be successful, they'll say yes. This is a puff piece, an entertainment article, and I'm not sure it matters nor am I sure it's connected to tech (except that Pokemon was originally a video game, and now is so much more).

If nobody at the company makes any stupid mistakes in product management. But that's a vert big if. Given sufficient time, any company will find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

My kids were toddlers when Pokemon took off, and they caught interest in it from their older cousins. Now in our house we have many field guides to birds, trees, wildflowers and so on. Before my kids got into Pokemon, one of their favorite things to do bakc then was to look through those guides and point to the va

  • Nintendo was founded in 1889. the have had 5 presidents of nintendo in this time. Nintendo is a company run by old men who do not understand nor like the internet. IF every mainline Pokemon since the DS launched was a singular crossplatform mmorpg exactly as seen in PokeMMO then this 50 year claim would hold water. As it stands their track record of mediocrity is pretty damning.

    • I wouldn't say Nintendo is unable to change with the times. They managed to make the jump from playing cards to video games back in the 1980s, after being around for nearly 100 years. They've made strides with mobile with Pokemon Go and still have a loyal fanbase. I wouldn't write management as just out of touch old men yet.

  • The Wizard of Oz franchise has been running for 125 years with officially recognized books up to 2014 so far.
