Nintendo Switch 2 Arrives on June 5, Priced at $450 (engadget.com) 42

Nintendo's Switch 2, priced at $450, launches June 5 with a 7.9-inch LCD screen offering 1080p resolution, HDR support, and 120Hz refresh capability. The device maintains the original Switch's 13.99mm thickness while increasing internal storage to 256GB from the previous 32GB.

The console outputs at 4K/60fps when docked, with the dock featuring a built-in cooling fan. Two USB-C ports handle accessories and charging. The system supports microSD Express cards but not original Switch microSD cards. Joy-Con controllers now attach via magnets instead of sliding rails and feature mouse-like functionality with compatible games. Both Joy-Cons and the new Pro Controller include a "C" button that activates a chat menu for the new "Game Chat" feature.

Game cards for Switch 2 will be red rather than black. The system maintains backward compatibility with original Switch cartridges and introduces a "Game Share" feature for local game sharing between consoles.

This represents about a 15% increase in price over the original Switch in inflation adjusted dollars.

    • That's pretty modest considering how much they are bumping the specs (compared to the original). They aren't on the bleeding edge but they were overcharging for the first gen.

I'm surprised they aren't charging full price to upgrade some games to the Nintendo Switch 2 editions. That's not very Nintendo of them...

      • I haven't seen actual specs just rumors. Right now it's kind of looking like you're going to get roughly what you would get in a $300 smartphone, maybe a $400 smartphone. The kind you buy unlocked that are sold at cost. But Nintendo is going to make a small fortune off of the software.

Basically it's kind of looking like it's going to be 2-year-old hardware. Not really a great price but the demand is high enough they can get away with it.

Switch 2 will play Switch 1 games, so they maintained backwards compatibility. At least Nintendo didn't get greedy in trying to force Switch 1 owners to buy new games, which would have killed Switch 2 sales.

          • It also lets them keep selling their S1 games. That's what it's really about. Folks forget how crazy long the tail is on Nintendo 1st party titles. When my kid was little they had a DS and one of the neighborhood kids stole their copy of mario kart. I thought, no big deal, sold millions, I'll buy a cheap used copy... Oh you sweet summer child. Used copies were $5 cheaper than new, I just ordered a new copy.

Most all of that 15% is in how much the yen has slipped in relation to the US dollar on top of the US inflation.

    • The super Nintendo was probably the most affordable counsel ever released. You got a game and two controllers for $200 at launch. That's a little more in today's money but the switch 2 is unlikely to ship with a game let alone a second controller.

One of the coolest tricks ever played was when Sony came out and said that one magic word, $299. Everyone went crazy and Sega took a big hit to their Saturn console. But the thing is that $299 didn't come with a game or a memory card. So by the time you were do

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics [bls.gov], $200 in August of 1991 (the North American SNES launch) is equivalent to $484.93 today. So the new Switch is cheaper.

That $200 included Super Mario World, the Switch 2 with Mario Kart World bundle is $499 so no, but it's close enough.

Inflation is nonuniform, there isn't just a single number that forms the basis of comparison.

      • Uh, it's definitely going to come with 2 controllers, they're right there in the video; just like with the original Switch, the left and right joycons can each be used as a single controller for a large percentage of the existing games. You talk like you know a lot about this but you shouldn't.

I reread this thread a few times, where are you getting hung up on controllers, the difference is SNES came with SMW.

That said, the Switch 2 with Mario Kart World bundle is only an extra $50, close to inflation adjusted SNES apparently

Why would you do an inflation adjusted comparison to something in 2025 dollars given the economic uncertainty everyone is facing?

They held the price flat through eight years of inflation. So you're doing 2016 to 2025 dollars, but who's to say they didn't price it in 2026, 2027 dollars. It will hold that price until 2033 .. we've all got four years of Trump messing with global markets to look forward to, I can't think of a single reason not to lock in a little future inflation now. This is all assuming apple

  • One of the big selling points for the original Switch was the new open world Zelda game that I absolutely adored. This seems to be launching without any major first party titles that would make me want to rush out and buy one at $300, much less the actual $450 price. The new Metroid game will be available for the Switch and there doesn't seem to be anything from third parties that is new or particularly exciting either.

This has been pretty standard from Nintendo for a while, they're relying on the "promise" of future first party Nintendo games you can't live without, and figure the hype of the new system will be enough to drive sales. At least they do typically deliver on the first party games throughout the lifecycle of a console; but I too waited a long time before I got a Switch (waited until the Lite released, and it was cheaper too).

Breath of the Wild also released on WiiU. So nice comparisons ya got there ;)

      • I honestly never knew this. I'm sure the tens of WiiU owners were extremely pleased. Not unprecedented for Nintendo though. I believe they released Twilight Princess (another game in the Zelda franchise) for the GameCube even though it was also a launch title for the original Wii. I don't think they lost too many Switch sales to WiiU owners as a result though.
        • WiiU still my fav. Mine has the best version of several games, exclusives you still can't get anywhere else, and a ton of old titles ported from the wii and prior systems it copied over from my old wii.
    • One of the big selling points for the original Switch was the new open world Zelda game that I absolutely adored.

That wasn't a killer Switch game though. The only exclusive launch title for the Switch was 1-2-Switch. Literally every other title was cross platform including Breath of the Wild which was released on Wii U at the same time.

      • You are correct, wii u has lots of exclusives. I waited a LONG time to get a switch, so many of the titles where ports from other systems, and it took them a while to get most of the ones I actually played. I'm more excited for the switch 2.
    • the chat button is pretty major. I'm supposed more people aren't mentioning it. Nintendo is famous for limiting 'chat' to: Lets go!, I'm using tilt controls, go easy on me!, and 'good bye!' besides generic hellos and goodbyes, there isn't much more you could historically communicate except that you are using motion controls and are an easy target. If Nintendo is actually finally opening that up and letting friends matchmake with each other, communicate, and do some actual game discovery it might help the

Basic performance I think is good enough.
      Higher resolution, better frame rate.
Some of the games that are not optimized for switch are having a hard time running well.
Switch 2 should help; maybe even if you are not getting the upgrade packs.

  • Now if history has taught me anything with sony and nintendo usually the best chips and mods are developed for the early versions of the consoles and are locked down by the time i come around to buying. Should i get this and just keep it offline until the modders figure it out. If i cant run pirate games then there no point.
    • by Rinnon ( 1474161 )
That's clever; but keeping it offline practically means you just store it in your closet until further notice... that's a bit frustrating; if I buy a new toy, I want to play with it.
  • So the current Switch resolution is a shit 720p they bumped it up only slightly to 1080p .. I'm sorry that's still pathetic. Many phones with smaller screen have more pixels.

    • by flink ( 18449 )

They want it to operate for more than a handful of hours playing a relatively modern game on battery power. Reducing the resolution in handheld makes sense to save power and you still get 4k when docked. An 8" screen @ 1080p is perfectly fine. Compare that to the Steam Deck OLED @ 800p or the ROG ally @ 1080p with similar sized screens.

A phone can manage 4k because it's not really doing anything graphically intensive when browsing the web or running an app. Any game that doing 3D graphics on your phone

Them as has, gets.

Working...
