Sony Considers PS5 Price Hikes (theverge.com) 19

An anonymous reader shares a report: Sony just announced its financial forecast for the next year, and it's expecting to be impacted by tariffs to the tune of 100 billion yen (about $680 million). To compensate, the company says it's considering options including moving manufacturing to the US and increasing prices for consumers.

Speaking to investors during the company's earnings call, Sony CFO Lin Tao confirmed that the company is considering "passing on" the price of tariffs to consumers in order to mitigate the impact on its bottom line. Tao didn't mention the PS5 by name though, and it's possible that Sony could try to protect pricing on its console through increases elsewhere in its electronics business. Sony has already increased the price of the PS5 this year, but only in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Sony is not going to move manufacturing for a 5 year old console to the US, it makes zero sense. Just setting aside the ridiculousness of investing billions of dollars based on whichever cat happens to be winning the fight inside an 80-year-old's brain in a given moment, it wouldn't make the costs of mass producing consoles cheaper. But maybe this is for the best, do Americans really need 65 PS5s when they can settle for 2?

Even if they did it would be worthless to Americans. Trump's own commerce Secretary admitted there would be no new jobs because of automation.

70% of the factory jobs lost got taken by robots not by outsourcing and honestly if you did another world war so that America was the only country with a functioning manufacturing base again that number would still be 70% or higher because without the cheap slave labor companies are just going to automate.

Create an automation tax to be the greater of $1 per unit produced, or 30% the retail price for all goods, even if they are not manufactured locally, or even if they are, and use proceeds to fund a UBI program that guarantees $30k/Year plus food, housing, and Healthcare for every American regardless of their means, even if they can't or won't get a job.

      • Atop that, even if by some stretch manufacturing came back to the US, it wouldn't make things cheaper.

If Company A is in China and has a tariff put on it, which raises the price of their product from $100 to $150, and then Company B moves manufacturing to the US, will they sell their product for $100? Not a chance. They're going to maximize profits. They can sell their product for $149 and still be cheaper than Company A.

They already made the decision to raise prices in several markets including the UK, Australia, EU, basically anywhere except for Japan and USA.

Sony boycott is on until they only raise prices for the US. Americans pay the Trump tariff tax.

Let us hope they put in a line item with every purchase showing how much tariff the consumer, not the company, is paying.
