Loki Hack '99 Patches available 38

anonymous porcupine writes "The kind folks at Loki Entertainment have finally released the Loki Hack '99 patches. Share and enjoy. And keep in mind that the hacks aren't listed in any particular order. :) " I actually had the privilege to judge the event at ALS - everyone did an amazing job (See the feature we did on it) - and now you can download the fruits of their labor.

You probably will have problems with some of the patches - eg the ones that add new units or new user interface compenents to panels. You could keep track of which files change under the ctp_data directory (specifically those under the english directories and make the suitable changes in the corresponding files in the german directories).

Sorry, I did kind of think about it at the time, but given the time constraints and my total lack of any knowledge of the German language I didn't do any.

  • For thine is the kernel and the penguin and the glory. Forever and ever, ^M. =:)
  • It's kinda hard to do that when you spend maybe 6 hours total in the hack room. ;)

  • Just a helpful info- I think you meant 'bust a cap.' We could kick back a 40 or sip on gin and juice, and the bust a cap. Word. Yo.
  • word up G, good to see some tight homies on Slashdot.
  • No, first posts were the worst thing ever to happen to slashdot...coupled with "naked and pertrified" and "Blow it out yer ass"...none of this shit is amusing after the 50,000th time...
  • Hey, I'm as white as they come. Pat Boone is right up my alley! ;) I just hadn't heard 'bust a 40' before. Hell, I just learned what benjamins are a few brief days ago! I have fired a glock, though- and I thought you'd refer to it as a 9, since it's a 9mm gun. 40 calibre makes sense, though. Thanks for clarifying!

No puff daddy mp3s, though. No baggy pants, either- although if I did, it'd be because I gotta have my Chuck Norris Superkick jeans for extra martial arts power in ordinary-looking street clothes (except for about a square foot of extra cloth in the groin.) Besides, dockers let me kick plenty high as it is. :)

How about versions compiled for glibc 2.0?

I'm liking these guys more and more.

I got an offer to beta test Heroes of Might and Magic III, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what else Loki does for Linux.

Even if it takes a God of Mischief to start things off right, I'll enjoy the anarchy of more Linux games and more open games.

Top 10 Reasons Free Software Really Pisses Off "the other guys":

    10. We have GOD on our side.
    9. Money? What's that?
    8. Two words: contract enforcement
    7. Our culture heroes actually work instead of worrying about the next third-wave paradigm shift in "IT" and writing books about roadmaps, "the roads ahead" and e-nothings.
    6. Our source can beat up your source.
    5. We didn't contract with the psychic hotline for our tech support.
    4. WE ARE GEEKS WITH GUNS, so you'd better not try any of that "licensing" crap with us or we'll bust a 40 on you!
    3. Crash, bork, die, hang, BSOD, nuke, fizzle...
    2. Due to technical difficulties, #2 was lost.
    1. We have a lovable penguin that children can identify with.. rather than the souless corporate icon of a window. =) Conversely, for the naughtier children, we have daemons.

Incase you're wondering why this is posted under the Loki thread... I have no idea... but it's funny enough that you can overlook this infraction, right?

  • See http://slashdot.org/articles/99 /09/17/1745235.shtml [slashdot.org].

I quote: Loki Entertainment Software has announced a contest where an elite group of hackers (in C++, that is) will be chosen to improve their port of Civilization: Call to Power. The winner will get a dual-processor Linux box as a prize.

  • Pretty neat. I haven't downloaded it yet but I hope it's in big, friendly letters.

What looks really impressive, though, is Multifractal Penguins and Porcupines.

Having cow units would be pretty cool as well.

Am I the only one disappointed with ESR's comparatively paltry entry? I kind of expected more (such as some actual programming) than some simple text-editing when I saw his name.

I was a programmer on the original version of CTP. This is actually the first time I've seen the list of Loki Hacks. I'll just comment on a few.

Flat map - The AI will probably have a lot of problems with this. As noted, pathing still thinks the world wraps, and the AI uses the same pathing...

    Don't Panic - Very amusing!

Cows were in the original design. They worked like mobile farms, basically. The problem was people would surround their cities with cows, making it impossible to attack with stealth units and generally annoying to move through enemy territory at all. You can actually enable most of the functionality just by adding the right flags to the text files, but not the ability of other units to rustle them. The latter code is gone, sorry.

The 1.2 version (out for Windows already) has an autpilot feature available from the chat window. I forget the command, but it's in the readme (I hope!)

The customize your civ hack is pretty darn impressive for 48 hours with this code. Nice one!

All of this is awesome. I'd love to do this with future games too. Thanks a lot to all of you!
  • Dude... I think you didn't properly sync your brain before you hit SUBMIT on that one... you're going seriously non-linear...

    Huh?

Might I suggest reading the page in question before posting? It's a good practice.

I was simply commenting (very lightly) on the material found there.

Plus, I wouldn't expect a hack of such minimal proportions from ESR. I mean, we're talking about ESR!
  • I heard that ESR tried to add a libertarian government option... Maybe he didn't have enough time to finish it?

  • Glocks (at least all that I've been exposed to) use 9mm. ie: 'Glock 9'... which, IIRC, is more-or-less equivalent to .357. Perhaps you're describing a Glock which busts caps my limited whitebread canadian ass ain't been exposed to yet.

West si-eeede. Gettin' jiggy with it. Yo yo yo etc.

(Why do I now have an image of Eric Cartman in my head complaining about not being able to play slip 'n slide in Zelma Hyack's underpants?)

  • Ummm... since when was the absence of a cool hack a reason to get upset at someone? Maybe ESR didn't feel like doing too much... or really wanted to get the history and stuff down correctly (scratch that itch, as he'd put it). You know, the whole point is he contributed something.. does it matter who his name is? :\

    --
  • since when was the absence of a cool hack a reason to get upset at someone?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset. Merely surprised.

I remember hacking the first Civilization with a hex editor... Hmm, my Phalanx appears to have an attack of 99. :-)* Funny how how those unit properties were stored in the save files.

I also made changes similar to ESR back then to add the missing Newfie civilization. :-)*

Wow, that was a long time ago.
  • Good question. I heard Microsoft hired Satan awhile back....

  • RMS, the atheist Saint of Emacs and leader of the FSF a god?

Who says the public media isn't changing people's perceptions?

  • >Cows were in the original design. They worked like mobile farms, basically.

I was kind of surprised at how many features were in the code, but just commented out - eg it looked like there were gateways to teleport from one place to another. Did these just not pass play-testing or was it a time-thing? They looked like they could be lots of fun to play around with.
  • > The 1.2 version (out for Windows already)

For about 2 months, right? Frankly, I would have preferred to see the Linux 1.2 patch (which was promised for BEFORE LokiHack took place) rather than these patchettes.
  • Two things:
    • They specifically state that the patches are applicable to the English version. Does that mean none of the patches work with the German version? I would think that the main differences between the versions would be in seperate language files or something.
    • One of my main problems with CTP is the rather meager set of configuration options; at least, that's my impression. Above all: I would love to be able to turn off the line which extends from the active unit to the mouse pointer, or, for that matter, I'd like to turn off mouse-based movement completely. I mean, I use the keypad to move units, and if I move my mouse-pointer out of the way, I get this stupid line stretching half-way across the screen. Anyone know of a way of doing this?

    Chris
  • RMS isn't a god, but Linus is. He said so himself, so it must be true.

Our Linus, who art in Transmeta, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in Redmond as it is in Transmeta.
Give us this day our daily patch, and forgive us our bugs, as we forgive those who make bugs for us.
And lead us not into Windows, but deliver us from Microsoft.
    Amen.

Kleeneness is next to Godelness.
