Second Army-Sponsored Game Comes To Xbox 19

Shackleford writes "CNN has an article that discusses a new Xbox videogame, the commercial version of an United States Army-sponsored project to train squad leaders in real-life combat tactics. It was developed by Pandemic Studios and the commercial Xbox game is titled "Full Spectrum Warrior" - there's an ad for it here." Here's the official site for the non-commercial console version of Full Spectrum Warrior - is this version intended for internal use only? Obviously, both of these are completely separate titles to America's Army, another Army-sponsored game.

    Does this game...

    - have British troops in it for a spot of target practice?

    - simulate the use of performance "enhancing" drugs?

    - have scenarios where troops stand by as national treasures are looted?

    - have scenarios where troops stand by as ministries are looted so a few weeks later they can say "well, we can't find any evidence of <whatever> because the documents were destroyed"?

    - stage faked rescues so the folks back home have something to cheer about?

    etc
    • You're thinking of 'The Sims At Peace Rally' where the Trotskyites sell newspapers, while the hippie-wannas relive yet one more time a myth of what 'The Sixties' were 'really all about.'

      Within that game is a parody subplot which includes your bullet points. The key, though, is that it's a flashback sequence, like on Gilligan's Island, of something that never was.

  • Way to go microsoft. We know it's easy to get most government agencies to work for you if you're a big enough company, but the army?
  • Every since 'Americas Army: Operations' came out last year (4th of July, but it was extremely un-playable until they removed the McKenna requirement), they had been promising another version of Americas Army- this one entitled 'Soldiers'.

    Admittedly, the game looked pretty bad. All you could see of it were a few screenshots of a screen with pictures of 'real' (Not CG) basic training. It was supposed to be a role-playing game that gave you an idea of what the Army was really like.

  • I installed ArmyOps.exe on my win2k partition and
    it asked me to "sign up" on a webpage or some such
    bullshit so I could register for "basic training".
    Fuuuuuuuhuuuuuuck that. the DoD wants me to register
    for a fucking game? What do they get out of it?
    Promptly uninstalled the game. They seem to be a
    little slow in copying the tricks of corporate
    America, but it's unnerving nonetheless.
  • Will it include a "Operation North Korean Freedom" mission in the game?
  • ...and Janet Reno must be thrilled.
    • Well yeah... inbetween games you use the controllers to curl 20 reps and then bench the X-box for 10 reps. After serious consideration the Army went with the best console suited for the gym.
