Sony Confirms PlayStation 5 Name, Holiday 2020 Release Date (theverge.com) 66

Sony has confirmed that its next-generation console will be called the PlayStation 5, and it'll be out next year, launching in time for "Holiday 2020." From a report: The company also announced several changes that it'll be making to the controller on the PS5. Chief among them is replacing the current rumble technology that Sony has been using since the original PlayStation for new haptic feedback technology that it promises will offer a "broader range of feedback." The other big change that Sony is talking about today is a technology it's calling "adaptive triggers," which will go in the primary R2/L2 triggers on the PS5's controller. According to Sony, developers will be able to "program the resistance of the triggers," giving the example that you'll be able to "feel" the increased tension as you draw back a bow or force you to push down with extra pressure if you're driving through rough terrain. It sounds pretty similar to a Microsoft patent from earlier this year, which detailed a similar trigger system for a future Xbox controller.

    • Its hard enough buying an album on standard CD these days never mind SACD whose discs were as rare as the proverbial hens teeth even when sony was pushing the standard back in the day. And unless your current SACD player is broken then what does it matter anyway?

      • I have a few dozen SACDs, and my PS3 broke a while back. I don't have a SACD player currently.

        It matters because I don't do much gaming on a console, and this is one feature that would change that for me.

      I'm wondering about the SSD too. The system will use 100GB BluRay discs but the games will need to be installed to SSD to play. Given that they are always stingy on the size of the internal memory you have to wonder how many games the base model will be able to install at once.

      They are talking about janky crap like only installing the multiplayer parts of games to save space, so it sounds like the answer to the previous question is "not many".

      • I had previously speculated that maybe we'll see some sort of hybrid drive, with SSD for fast access and a larger spinning platter for bulk storage. I'll be really disappointed if we just see small-ish SSDs. It will be a large step back. Who cares if it's super fast if you can't actually store your games on it? My network speeds are a hell of a lot slower than an HDD. Well, I guess we'll just have to see.

        The installation requirement could actually be a good thing. It means games can be written with th

          I agree, although another option is that they go with dual SSD/HD system, and implement something like Bcache or Flashcache. That will give Sony the option to have larger cache sizes than typically available with current hybrid drives. Which may come in handy when you're running a game may be 100GB in size. A good 128GB SSD drive would very nicely cache system files and the most recently run game.

      • Yeah, I agree with you guys. It's going to be a hard pass from me (dawg) unless they include minidisc support as well. I mean Sony made the fucking things, amirite, and now they aren't supporting them??!
    • If it does, I'll buy one. If not, I'll stick to PC games.

      So if they support 20 year old tech , THEN you'll buy?

      ok.

      I want it to have an Atari 2600 cartridge slot too.

    • Sony is going to need to do a whole lot more to get me to buy into the next generation. Frankly, I'm fed up with the locked down console scene and PC gaming is going strong. I see no point whatsoever in sinking a thousand dollars into Sony's ecosystem when I could put the same money into a highly respectable PC expansion.

        That's where I've been since my PS3 died. There's just no reason to get a console. The exclusive games aren't good enough.

        For me, SACD support would get me to buy one, though. Not much else would...

        • I got the PS4, but yawn. I could have skipped it and been just as happy. PS5? I don't think so, not unless they do something radical to make it more open. Their encrypted hard disks tied to just one machine really piss me off. That alone is enough to ban Sony from here on.

        • by deek ( 22697 )

          The exclusive games aren't good enough.

          That's a bizarre comment. Exclusive games have been absolutely stellar on Sony's console. They are literally a console seller, and the reason why the PS4 handily beat the Xbox this generation, and have lured over many PC gamers to console.

          Here are some absolutely top rate titles for PS4:
          * God of War
          * Spiderman
          * Horizon: Zero Dawn
          * Uncharted 4
          * Shadow of the Colossus
          * Last of Us (and sequel coming out next year)

          Though if you had a PS3 in the pa

          • I had Last of Us on PS3. None of the others really do anything for me.

            I could buy a SACD player, but it would be cool if they brought that back for the PS5. It's the only thing that would get me to buy one.

            • by deek ( 22697 )

              You're missing out. That list is some of the most brilliant gaming experiences of this generation. Horizon just knocked it out of the park. Uncharted 4 is pretty much the pinnacle of the series. Incredibly well done. Spiderman, well, did you ever want to experience web slinging around a metropolis, like it was completely natural? They nailed this so hard, it left hammer marks on the console. God of War was a complete and utter surprise. Gameplay was so different, and so brilliantly done.

              But hey, if

              • If the PS5 has SACD support, then I'll buy one, and then I'll likely try games like those.

                But those games alone won't sell a PS5 to me.

  • Not.

    I think like most people on here I'd be far more interested in finding out about the hardware ray tracing functionality which would be a first on a console anywhere AFAIK, and its pretty rare on stand alone graphics cards too. However the article devotes a whole 2 lines to it. Great.

      They could make the controllers cheaper. 60 bucks for a first party controller is ridiculous.

      I wish they would do a decent d-pad. Nintendo ones are a lot better.

      Still, better rumble would be nice. 20 years ago the Dreamcast had much better rumble than current Playstations. It wasn't just vibration, it was able to produce a sensation somewhat like the action it was representing. Tyres mounting a curb, your character falling to the ground, somehow it felt more like those things rather than just a generic vibr

        Still, better rumble would be nice.

        The "Haptic Feedback" meantioned in the article is exactly that. Also, the d-pads on the switch aren't great, nintendo's dpads have gotten worse.

      • A NES gamepad for $19.99 in 1986 would be equivalent to $46.70 today. I'd argue that other than Sony's shit d-pad the rest of the control is a significant upgrade to the gamepads of yore.

        • by AmiMoJo ( 196126 )

          This type of comparison is flawed for two reasons.

          1. In the 90s controllers were a lot cheaper (adjusted for inflation), so the price went down as the controllers got more complex, and then back up.

          2. Manufacturing improvements keep pushing prices down. Normally things get cheaper over time because of this, unless there is some external force acting to push prices up. In this case it's increased profits.

          • a NES game pad is a CMOS shift register (4021?), some plastic, some wire, and a silicon membrane. There isn't a whole lot of cost involved when there is volume, even in the mid-80's when TI and others were cranking out these small scale integration into many millions of units.

            Global labor costs leveled off in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Manufacturing costs aren't really the significant part here. It's the about how well a business runs global operations. It's about controlling your channel overhead a

        Why?

        If you see how crap third party controllers are for half that price, I don't mind paying just a bit more and get a first party controller that's of better quality, that is not made of cheap plastic or feels like it's going to fall apart at any moment.

        Admittedly, there is a bit of room to move since the plethora of alternate color scheme controllers pretty much shows they are a profitable item (well, of course i

        And that statement is based on what? No one is suggesting it'll ray trace the whole scene, probably just certain objects that lend themselves to it.

      PS5 == XBox Two

      I wouldn't be surprised if MS just renames it "XBox Six" in a lame attempt to convince gullible people.

      I'm still waiting for when the 4th version comes out and they make a "pro" special edition:

    • What is this witchcraft of naming a system sequentially?

      The most amazing thing is that there is an entire team of marketing people complete with management who draw a salary for these decisions.

      • Whatever they're earning, they're doing a better job than Microsoft's schizophrenic Xbox naming schemes, which always seems like a desperate attempt to avoid a simple number because they'd be PlayStation # - 1. At some point, MS is probably going to just be blatant about it and skip a couple of numbers to put them ahead.

    I heard this was suppose to be a PC killer. Doesn't look like they have that much confidence in that.
    • Consoles have *always* been 3+ years behind PCs. They are a convenience factor of Pay and Play. (Or used to be before there was day zero patches.)

      • by tepples ( 727027 )

        That and until about a decade ago, TV output wasn't a standard feature of PCs, so most PC games were stuck on smaller monitors that couldn't accommodate more than one person. Thus fighting games, party games, and other games in same-screen multiplayer genres were either for one console or for multiple consoles excluding the PC.

        This began to end in 2007, when the market switched from CRT SDTVs to LCD HDTVs with inputs compatible with PCs' VGA and HDMI output.

        • Starting in 2007, that's when the number of local multiplayer games started going way down.
          The only thing that guarantees it are party games. Maybe 1on1 fighters currently, if some of them haven't already moved on.

      Way too early to announce that a year ahead of launch. As for performance, I have the PS4 Pro (4.12 TFLOPS) and a 1080 Ti (11.34 TFLOPS) and I would say those numbers lie about how big the difference is, like twice the flops don't mean twice as pretty. Playing Red Dead Redemption 2 it looks very nice already and whatever the oomph they'll add to a PS5 I expect it to be significantly better than the XB1X (6 TFLOPS) so like 8-12 TFLOPS somewhere. Sure there'll be even faster PC cards but I'm pretty sure we've

      Raw specs are only part of the equation. Consoles' optimization for gaming and standard hardware set for game designers gets more out of less hardware. However, there's a limit to how much they can squeeze out of hardware the 8-10 year console lifespan, while PC hardware keeps evolving. When a new console system is introduced it enjoys a couple years of being about as good as a typical PC [super gaming rigs aside], but the average gaming PC quickly catches up and surpasses consoles [which is part of why I c

  • They have poorer ergo than Microsoft controllers, and they're harder to repair when the thumbsticks inevitably begin to fail. Not like it's a nightmare, but adding more hardware to the controller will inevitably make it worse.

    As far as I'm concerned the best controller ever was Big Duke, but I've got giant hands.

    • As far as I'm concerned the best controller ever was Big Duke, but I've got giant hands.

      My memory of The Duke will always be trying out the Xbox in a..... Walmart I think? Maybe it was a Toys R Us or Target. Either way, the Duke was held by some heavy, immovable arm. It was down really low, and also pointed almost 45 degrees down. You couldn't lift it or even change the angle. That set up was FUCKING AGONY. It's tainted my view of The Duke in all situations ever since.

  • It better not have junk-ass batteries on controllers like the PS4. Matter of fact, some plugged in controllers... not 3rd party... would be nice.

    • by deek ( 22697 )

      Of all the criticisms of the DS4 controller (which I think is actually really nice to use), battery is absolutely the one decent point.

      Though don't you realise you can use a standard USB cable to connect the DS4 to the console? It will use the USB connection for its signalling. I assume that qualifies as a 1st party plugged in controller?

  • Honestly, who cares about a new hardware platform when there are no games in the pipeline to get excited about. This past generation has gutted gaming and replaced it with cleverly disguised slot machines.

  • I thought Salesforce continually announcing their plans for a "Winter/Summer Update" was obnoxiously ill conceived (whose winter, mine or yours? And which hemisphere are you announcing this from?).
