Doctor Apologizes For Ranting About 'Console Wars' From Operating Room (vice.com) 88

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Motherboard: People are review-bombing a hospital in India with one-star reviews after a doctor tweeted a video of himself during a procedure with an unconscious patient. The anesthesiologist, who goes by Dr. Shreeveera on Twitter and his YouTube channel, filmed himself supposedly in an active operating room where he had just anesthetized a patient and was preparing for an invasive procedure to remove a gallbladder. He claimed to be defending himself against people claiming he's not a real doctor, because they disagree with his passion for the "console wars." "Console wars" is shorthand for the decades-long argument between gamers about which platform -- Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo devices, PC gaming, and so on -- is the best.

Shreeveera posted the video to Twitter, writing, "Here I am after inducing anaesthesia, intubating & putting a patient on controlled mechanical ventilation for a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy case in OR. Slandering my identity, profession coz you Xbots can't Argue FACTS!" according to gaming news outlet Dextero. He added, "SAVING LIVES- My Job. CONSOLE WARS- My Hobby." He was allegedly trying to defend himself from accusations that he wasn't a real doctor. Dextero, which viewed the video before Shreeveera locked his Twitter account, says that he pans around an operating room holding up the phone to record himself, showing the patient on the operating table.

Shreeveera posted an unlisted apology video on YouTube on Monday, saying that he's received a lot of backlash and racist harassment because of his video. He says he regrets posting the video and acknowledges that his obsession with console wars is childish, but also tries defending himself and his hobby. "I'm a human being guys, I make mistakes, please let's move on ahead," he said. "I do not hate anyone on a personal level. If I do not like the console they're playing, I just make points regarding what that console is giving you... this is just a hobby of mine." Judging from his YouTube channel, Shreeveera is clearly a PlayStation fan and an Xbox hater.

        This is probably because I am old. The current controllers are just not intuitive for me. Keyboard and mouse are better, because a keyboard has more buttons than any controller, and a mouse is SO much more precise than any thumbstick.
        • Try a DS4 on Steam... I agree with you as far as stick aiming goes, but with Gyro Aim? Mouse/KB is still slightly better, but Gyro Aiming makes playing PC games from the couch a fantastic experience
          • I already PC game from the couch. :) With a keyboard on my lap, and my mouse beside me. PC gaming on a 65" 4K TV is pretty awesome. (I generally run 1080, because my old eyes don't see a huge gain, but I can definitely hear the GPU fans at 4K.)

      Well, it was back when GPU pricing was still sane. Now you can spend roughly what an Xbox Series S costs just on a 1050ti. The bang-for-your buck ratio has gone horribly out of the PC's favor, ever since cryptocurrency mining screwed up GPU prices.

    I like how "racist" was subtly worked into the response. Even if the harassment was using terms that are deemed racist, that does not appear to be the cause of the backlash (i.e., the backlash was cased by the actions not by the race of the person in question).

      The point you're trying to make is flawed. Yes, sometimes race/gender gets thrown around when it may not have been relevant. However, you're wrong in this case. What he is being harassed for, in this context, is not relevant to the content of the harassment he receives. This, if anything, would actually be more relevant as he is being racially targeted for something irrespective of race.

It's a mix of long periods of boredom (there's a lot of waiting), dealing with the periods of intense stress, familiarity with the topic (after your 1000th opened up human the impact is lost), and just the usual kind of things humans do.

            The one I know would start by sterilising your phone. Think autoclave, hot steam, and lots of it.
            That is just where she would start. You do not want to know the what else she would do.

        I think what makes it a story is that he recorded a video of himself in the operating room and posted the video online.

    • It's a stupid debate because you can just about buy another gaming console for what it costs to fill the average SUV with gas twice. Maybe it's an issue if your TV has run out of HDMI inputs and adding an HDMI switch is too confusing (judging by some of the doctor's I've met while doing air conditioning work, I wouldn't be surprised)..

        Nope, they are x86 PC's at this point making games super easy to port. PS2 and P3 were funky architectures which made porting a royal pain the ass. The gamecube had weird dvd's which also made porting games in the ass (4.5GB DVD vs 1.5GB gamecube disc).

        Either way the fact you think they are special means you're easily swayed by the marketing bullshit. I've seen 23+ year of video card marfketing.

  • You know, having to see people die regularly is enough to necessitate some mechanism for escaping conscious thought. This guy winds himself up pestering people about a real unimportant aspect of life so he doesn't get emotionally crushed by the weight he carries at work. Kudos to him. Sounds like a healthy distraction mechanism to me.

    We all dabble in occasional gaming barter. But not to the point to jeopardize other people. Yes "our choice of acquisition" is better than than yours, or whatever. But there are literally millions of people on all platforms.

    And again, you are a doctor. You can buy them all. There is nothing wrong, and everything right with abandoning loyalty to a multi-billion-dollar company, and just enjoying your games.

  • The correct way is to dox or SWAT the people who have a different point of view than your own.
  • When your good your good I guess. What matters is the doctors success rate. If you can do your job well who cares what employees talk about. Honestly health professionals are people not robots, yes they have a serious job but hell some things just aren't worth the effort to complain about.
  • Is that the problem? Did he show the patient's face, or some embarrassingly exposed part of their body?

    If not, why should anyone give half-a-rat-turd about this other than the people he was arguing with?

    • Regardless of the Surgeon's console opinions, tweeting a photo of the patient is a huge HIPAA privacy violation. I don't know what kind of privacy laws they have in India, but I think the hospital's director should look into this.

    Before the term "console" got hijacked (to mean cheap entertainment devices) gamers didn't give a shit what system they played on. They just wanted fun, affordable games. The advantages of consoles used to be plug-and-plug, inexpensive, and relatively crash free games. Games are no long stable, now requiring HUGE day-1 patches because there is never time for "soak tests" to pass
