ThinkTanks Linux Version Released 12

Bruha writes "This story from Linux Online Gaming points out that ThinkTanks, a 3D tank combat game, is now available for Linux. It can be bought here, and a demo is available. This has to be one of the most entertaining games I've played on Linux in a long time." The site also has a Mac version available, with the developers telling us the Windows version should be out before the end of the week, and this looks like a very neat use of the GarageGames Torque engine to create a good-looking, playable independent game on multiple platforms.

    Check here for details. [garagegames.com]

I dl'ed and played ThinkTanks (for OSX, yay!) today and found it to be totally fun... not exactly huuuge in terms of investment, but very fun to play. I'm especially happy that there are game companies like GarageGames out there who are willing to do Linux/Win/OSX releases all together, and their Torque Game engine SDK seems fit for this scenario...

I think we could look forward to more interesting, fun games from the Torque engine in the future. Cross-platform too, woohoo!

Keep watching - there's a lot more stuff in development using the Torque engine. I've got Trajectory Zone [trajectoryzone.com] in development using Torque - which means I can support Mac, Linux, and Windows without much more than a re-compile. Needless to say, I'm not the only one thinking that way - the engine is good, and works pretty well on all platforms. This could end up turning into yet another way that Linux and Mac start getting some really good games.

There's also a couple o' other games released using Torque that
    • is the fact that the Linux and Mac version was out b4 the Windows...

Wonder if they planned it that way?? :)

    • I just wanted to point out the Windows players had to wait 'til today to get the game... it was very satisifying getting emails whining from Windows players about when they'd get to play the game.

  • I wonder if this game resembles Return Fire.. Thats one game I miss in Linux. If I had the time, I would try to build a multiplayer version of Return Fire (not like Return Fire 2) in SDL.
  • ThinkGeek vs. ThinkTank ...

I bet the gadgets would win.

  • Trus me on this once you play in multiplayer mode you're gonna be addicted to it. I also think it's a great PvP game for kids also since it's bloodless and very fun. Plus it's very good for the mouse eye co-ordination!

Not often you come across something as good as this.
  • Looks like bzflag to me. The hills might add interest.

I kinda like bzflag's portals, though.
  • The controls were very laggy, with the mouse cursor so slow I found myself "chasing the needle". I tried on both a 450 mhz machine with 32 megs vram, and on a 850 mhz machine with 16 megs vram, both nvidia drivers on linux.

Programmers do it bit by bit.

Working...
