Truck Dismount One-Ups Stair Dismount 54

The Herman writes "The free Stair Dismount game from tAAt for the PC was a big underground hit, and now there's a even better sequel: Truck Dismount. This program does a full-body crash simulation, with the crash-test dummy being smashed into a wall with a truck this time round." This sequel is almost more fun than the much-loved original, if that's even possible.

  • Then why has hardly anybody ever heard of it? There are very, very few freeware games that ever become popular.
  • Perhaps the poster meant that nearly all of the people who encounter the game enjoyed it thoroughly, rather than many people encountered it. I find nothing strange about the statement.

If there were an option for a seatbelt, this might be considered educational software, since it would be a good demo of the difference between using one and not using one. Then again, every one would turn it off to get a higher score and we wouldn't want our entertainment to be educational.

Oh man the only thing that could make this better would be if the truck caught fire at the end.

Looks like I have a new favourite game.

If only you could save movies - I've got it so the guy sits on the roof, slides to the back as the truck goes up the ramps, gets bounced into the air then batted against the wall by the roof of the truck. He lends, then the truck lands its rear wheels on him. Superb!

Actually, the replays are saved along with the score when you get a highscore. You can view them from the highscore list.

Haven't found a way to export the replays from the highscore list though...

Kewl!! I've saved my scores.dat - presumably if you replace your scores with this one you will be able to see my masterpiece.... [skinjob.co.uk]
        • Nope, I downloaded your scores.dat and wasn't able to view them (clicking on "Scores" gave me a blank list). Replacing it with my saved scores.dat brought my scores back. (Can you try installing on another machine and see if your scores.dat works? Perhaps I had an error in the download...)

What impresses me is that someone has managed to get over 203k! See the high score list. [jet.ro]

I managed to get the truck to roll over. Didn't crush the guy tho; still working on that. ;-)

          • Hmm.. I downloaded the zip version if that makes a difference (the zip just extracts to a folder where you run it directly).

I just made a copy of the folder, deleted the scores.dat, ran it which generated a fresh scores.dat, quit, replaced the scores.dat with the one in question then ran the game and my old scores were back again.

Perhaps try it with the zip version?

            203K!!! omg is that possible??
        • ...actually I think the problem is since I downloaded it the author has updated the game by a point release - this is probably why my scores.dat doesnt work.

I just managed to get the guy over the wall too.
    • I've got it so the guy sits on the roof, slides to the back as the truck goes up the ramps, gets bounced into the air then batted against the wall by the roof of the truck.

Nice. I just did one where the guy goes flying over the wall, off the camera! (If you use camera "3" it will follow him over the wall, sweet.)

If only you could save movies

Check out this guy's [slashdot.org] scores.dat -- I wasn't able to get it working but he said he could on another machine...

    • And I just got him to land on the wall. Neat trick that. I wish it showed a number or setting for each of the sliders, so we could share setups and view each other's stuff. It's not too hard though: guy in middle, both ramps in middle, position 3, fastest truck, and ramp 1 all the way to the right, ramp 2 all the way to the left. (I just exited and re-tried this and he still landed on top of the wall, but in a different location.)

I've been playing with Stair Dismount as well, and although I can't come

      • "I've been playing with Stair Dismount as well, and although I can't come close to the high score, I did get a low score of 62. Beat that!"

Done, low score of 25. Heading 204.08, pitch -53.73 low force, right hip :)
        • Thanks! Nice angle. I couldn't reproduce it exactly (the interface doesn't let you type the numbers, and it jumps about .30 each pixel the mouse moves). So my attempt was also right hip, heading 204.16, pitch -57.01, and I had a score of 0 for the entire fall, and it went up to 16 right at the end.

Funny though, each time I try it I get a different (low) score, even with the Force being the same (1 bar). I just tried it at 2 bars and got 15. So ... beat that! (I also just tried again at 1 bar, and it

          • beat this:
            heading: 195.95
            pitch: -90.00
            force: 1bar

            Got 0!!!
            • Wow not bad. Don't think I can beat it! ;-)

              I just cam back to post because I got a score of 1 -- target=head, heading=360.00, pitch=90.00, force=1 bar.

What was your target for the score of 0?

And I just retried it and for about 10 seconds had a score of 0, but I guess it's programmed not to stop the clock if the score is 0, so he slowly started to tumble down the stairs and I ended up over 11k. Oh well.

There we go. I was very close to your settings (target=chest, heading=195.85, pitch=90.00, force

    • I like to see how far I can shoot them over the wall :)

The high scores are all from this weird bug where his head goes through the wind shield and then bounces around like mad.

I'd love to see more options like seatbelts and multiple passengers head on collisions with other cars. Or or even a plane crash simulator.
      • There were one like that in the first game too. I think that was about the only thing that would get you over 100K points.
    • I'm curious how people are getting their high scores, like how high it can go without using a bug. I got a high score of 76,409 by placing the ramps very close together, but with a gap between them. The result is that the guy gets wedged there and the truck also gets stuck and keeps damaging him trying to get over the ramp. The score would have gone higher had it not timed out. I'll post the scores file if someone is interested.
      • holly crap! i just got 120601 points like that!

the method i like is that if you get the ramps just right the guy will jump up into the air and you can get the truck to hit him, realy cool visiauly, but you don't get meny points that way. launching him over the wall is fun too :D
    • I emailed the author about adding the ability to export replays, and he answered:

I didn't have time to include that functionality, but I hope I have time to add it to a future version.

Something I am definitely looking forward to!

tAAt games are golden. I recently checked also some of their demos which were quite funny as well!
  • When I run the windows installer, my PestPatrol software reports "Family Key Logger 1.10" as being run - anyone else get that?

I did check out and thoroughly enjoy the original... don't remember this happening then =/

    • what good would a keylogger do? how many people log into their bank account or make credit card purchases while playing this game?
    • I didn't run the Installer, I just unpacked from the zip file. For what it's worth, I don't get Family Ky Logger when I use PestPatrol's on-line scanner. Since there's not an installer, I ran the scan while Truck Dismount was running.

  • Seems to be the best way to get huge scores is to have him bash against the windshield and rattle around in there.

Let's learn from this and eliminate windshields from cars ... at least people won't rattle around inside their cars until they die, and can enjoy the true freedom of flying before landing on a fire hydrant.

  • Is configuring every *just right* so that the hapless character gets pole-vaulted clean over the wall. Anyone else have some favorites?
  • This game would be so much cooler if you could speed it up and watch it in realtime.

On another note though, there used to be a program I used at school, forget the name, which let you setup whole scenes that operated with the laws of physics, it was 2D, and you could have forces, pulleys, whatever. You could make joints between pieces so you could model a human, have them get struck by bullets, etc. You could also make little scenes that you could control on the fly, so you could make a game where you tri

  • Sorry for not putting that info in my story. I just din't know it.. maybe i should research a bit more. I will defenately be watching tAAT for more games :)
