Tokyo Skyscraper Attacked By Space Invaders 16

Thanks to Tokyopia.com for their article showing a massive Tokyo skyscraper with Space Invaders projected on the side of it, as part of Taito's celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the all-time classic shooter. The special Anniversary Edition is being re-released for the PlayStation 2, and the remake has some interesting features: "You are in a 3D room... [and] can adjust the camera... [to] have the view you would have probably had if you were actually sitting at a real table top. While you play you can hear sounds coming from the other machines in the room." Special editions of the game also come with a classic tabletop controller, as Slashdot Games reported a few weeks back.

That some guys projected Space Invaders onto a building as part of an advertising stunt? Well let me tell you something.

As part of an advertising stunt a few years ago, FHM (UK) projected a picture of Gail Porter, naked [bbc.co.uk], onto the side of the Houses of Parliament. Now that's much more of a story.

    Where was Slashdot then, eh?

    • Had it been Natalie Portman, /. would have taken notice. Think about it. You'd have Natalie Portman naked, projected onto stone. The trolls would post until they collapse into apoplectic fits. The moderators would be powerless to stop them! Natalie Portman naked and petrified, and it's on topic!!

    • Sure they did, but her ass was really badly airbrushed which kind of ruined the effect. I can remember thinking how hideous her ass must have been for them to have done that much work on it.

Any one find it strange that it is as much of a game playing simulator as it is a game? It really feels like I'm playing Space Invaders!
  • I'd love to hear the subwoofers as the space invaders descending down like the RIAA's attempt to trample down file swappers. I'd imagine the company would just play some techno music then.

If you tried this in many American big cities, you'd have too many windows on the building shot out by passersby hoping to nail some aliens.
  • At last, my project to ge Custer's Revenge [classicgaming.com] projected on a mountainside at Little Bighorn National Monument moves closer to fruition! Bwahahaha!
  • "You are in a 3D room... [and] can adjust the camera... [to] have the view you would have probably had if you were actually sitting at a real table top. Where's the 3D rendered as if you were on the ground fighting real alien invaders mode? They could have metallic, secret ops black, organic hybrid, and plain ovalheaded grey alien color skins.
  • So, if I read that summary right the game consists of space invaders with a twist, that beng that you are "part of" a 3d room, looking at a virtual 2-d display.

So you are actually sitting in a real-world 3-d room, looking into your 2-d display, which is showing a virtual 3-d room with in which you are looking at a virtual 2-d display ? Seems kinda crappy to me.

Maybe I should read the article, might make more sense.

If this is how the Japanese choose to celebrate the anniversary of one of their more notable contributions to world culture, I shudder to think of what's going to happen next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of their other more notable exports [godzilla.co.jp]! I can just see some poor Japanese businessman or cute little Japanese high school girl casually looking up at the side of a skyscraper, seeing the image, and grumbling "Oh Lord, not again!" before running to the nearest shelter!

    • Actually when I was in Japan the sighting of Godzilla was just a common occurrence, like earthquakes in California. I saw Ultraman and Godzilla battling it out in Tokyo and I was snapping pictures like mad! The Japanese folks who saw me doing this just shook their head, muttered "tourist", and kept walking.
  • Just wait until the real space invaders [uncoveror.com] show up. No one will be laughing then!
