The Getaway Missions - Done In Real Life

Geeky Boy Fan writes "A site called The Real Getaway Tour features fans of the PlayStation 2 game, The Getaway, doing the missions in real life." This gritty, London-based gangland game uses a surprisingly accurate game world, so it's possible to find the place the hero's son gets kidnapped and even drive the same car out of the hospital featured in the game. Fortunately for law and order, you can't steal an armored vehicle from Covent Garden in real life, but apparently, you can pretend.

THis is exactly the kind of publicity gaming needs on the eve of a new round of government involvment and editorial criticism regarding the impact and effect ot realistic depictions of violence on youth/adults/pets/whatever.

Though its pretty cool that the level design in the game reached this level of detail. If somebody would make a grand theft auto: Ann Arobr I could finally get back at all of those militant pedestrians that back up trafic and maybe even get the chance to drive through the art fair; years of pent up frustration could be shed in a few drunken afternoons of cathartic goodness!

FWIW, I actually emailed the guys running this site before posting the story, to see if they could mirror it somewhere other than Geocities, and they said they'd signed up for some kind of bandwidth deal which meant the site had no bandwidth cap.

But they do pay extra for each GB over their monthly limit, so hopefully a subpage Slashdotting won't actually cost 'em much cash. Wacky.

and in other news today, in great britian children dressed as plumbers in overalls and caps ate "magic mushrooms" that they claim made them grow. The also children claim they were chased by winged turtles and lifesized bullets. No comment, however, on allegations that a certain neighbor, Mr. Greg "King Koopa" Cooper had anything to do with the childrens activities or stories.

Seriously though, a lot of people here in my office were excited when this game came out - our building's in it, meaning that you can wait outside and blow away anyone who looks like an exec.
