I have high hopes, like maybe he'll put some bitches in their place or jack a sweet caddy to roll in.

I can recall playing a game as a kid which was I think was called Evolution. You started out as an amoeba and worked up the evolutionary ladder through a series of action oriented stages.
I can't recall all the stages, but there was a beaver one which had you building a dam. The last stage was human of course. I believe you battled against evil robots.
When you cleared the final human stage, there was a big explosion wiping out most life on Earth. And of course you started all over again, as a lowly amoeba.
    • If what Wikepedia says is true, Spore will be one of the worst games of all time:
      1. Tidepool stage is similar to Pac-Man I loathe Pac-Man.
      2. Evolution, Diablo I like the original Diablo, but I'm not really fond of Diablo II.
      3. Tribal, Populous Populous was an OK game.
      4. City, SimCity SimCity can be fun, although gets boring quite quickly.
      5. Civilization, Risk and Civilization Civ is great fun! Risk sucks.
      6. Invasion, similar to 4X and space colonization games Apart from CRPGs, my favorite kind of game.

      Now, I

      • Don't consider them to be "similar" in the sense that you're thinking of them. This is innocvation in action. Not anything new, but everything that you've already seen before is being re-invented. Or rather, re-innovated. Innovation dosen't only mean "hey this is new!!!" It also relys heavily on what's already been created long ago. That's one of the things that makes innovation so hard to recognize, the fact that there's so many "grey" areas where it's hard to determine if you're copying or re-creating.
    • Heh, it's quite apparent he took some ideas out of his past games. Sucha as Simearth, where the evolution went from bacterial stage to the stone age into the modern world and then into the exodus.

Not saying it's a bad idea, Simearth was a good idea but it was hard to understand for most people. This game is probably alot more easier to grasp.

And I really don't mind the idea of severeal types of gameplay in one game. My favorite games are hybrids after all. I just hope it's smooth between thoose games.
      • SimEarth was a great game for playing while doing laundry.
There wasn't much moment-to-moment interaction, so you could drop the controller just about whenever and just ignore it for 10 minutes or so, rather safely.

That it was so slow might have been part of the problem with its general acceptance.
    • Spore is not yet even officially a game. What Will showed was a tech demo, demonstrating what he believes could be the future of game design, and a way of keeping costs managable instead of having them spiral to the heights of the biggest hollywood films.

Unless i have simply missed something, Spore is still only a tech demo. Considering the style of coding it was done it, i would be very interested to find out how big the tech demo was. Ive seen the 64k demos, and what they pack in there is amazing.

Buy a console. It's cheaper than a decent video card, and runs more games than PCs. A modded Xbox is highly recommended.

However if you consider, for example, Elder Scrolls series (both current Morrowind and future Oblivion) - PC gives you pretty much free pass for whatever modding you want. Just look at what Morrowind's mods have done to the game when it comes to graphics (both textures and models), gameplay (AI and additional functions like meaningful combat combos, etc) and environment (sounds, towns brought to life with scripted NPCs, etc). Plus 5-6 good content mods. Something you will not achieve on console for a long time (if ever).
        • Plus 5-6 good content mods. Something you will not achieve on console for a long time (if ever).

Actually, there have been a few games on Xbox that have already done content upgrades. I know that one of the DOA games allowed you to add extra costumes via a demo disc (costumes were copied to the HD). Also from Tecmo, there has been at least 1 content update for Ninja Gaiden. I believe they added a new weapon, changed some moves, and perhaps added some additional difficulty? Anyway, with consoles getti

      • Please. How this got modded informative is beyond me. I'll buy a console when a game like Heroes of Might and Magic, Civilization or Baldur's Gate comes out for it...
        • PC and consoles generally have different types of game though. I suppose the recommendation should really depend on what sort of games the person wants to play. Although some genres like FPSs are well represented on both types of platform, some games like RTS and "Dungeons and Dragons" style RPGs are usually on PC, probably because they need keyboard and mouse control and high res displays more. On the other hand, the PC doesn't exactly have a large number of 3D beat-em-ups, or 3D platformers.

Is there anyone out there waiting for Black and White 2?

Also, has Peter Molyneux made a good game since Syndicate? I mean he's clearly hard working, he's willing to take risks on high concept games, and his graphics and tech are of good quality, but in the end, the gameplay is always as week as American beer.

Well... I enjoyed Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital and Magic Carpet quite a bit.
I admit true to Molyneux form, Dungeon Keeper didn't quite live up to the hype but it was good fun. I would love to see someone revisit the concept with current technology.

Same can be said about Fable.
      • I play Dungeon Keeper 2 all the time. Never played the first one, but I was under the impression that number 2 just improved on the originals formula. The graphics are still pretty ok too even in this day and age.

I don't know about Black and White. I got way to bored with it after I realized that I would have to train my creature for hours and hours and I found it kinda hard to be evil. Aparantly constantly destroying villages didn't make me evil enough for some reason.

Only as a historical exercise. Dungeon Keeper 2 has all the good stuff as far as I can recall. The games are very similar - with DK 2 being an evolution of the first game.
          • Yeah DK2 was a great game. I play Homeworld all the time too. Need to find a copy of Catyclysm (sp?) one of these days to see how it was. Haven't seen a torrent floating around lately. I tried Total Annihilation but found it too confusing at first. Too many options. I prefer more simple RTS games. I also play Ultima VII from time to time as well as Fallout a lot. System Shock 1 & 2 are really great, as well as the Underworld games (my favorites maybe) and so of course is Half-Life. I wanted to
            • Homeworld was classic. Cataclysm, not so much. You could tell it wasn't relic. It just didn't have the same feel. Plus, while initially exciting, Ion Cannon frigates are just a stupid idea.
              • I found the lack of weapons on the original mothership rather stupid. I mean you have this huge ship with incredible manufacturing capabilities, and you can't shove a missle out a launch bay once in a while?

Cataclyism had its problems, but so did the original. I just wish it had been possible for Cataclyism to modify the original game to use it's engine. The ablity to command your ships on the map screen was priceless.

                Homeworld 2 however...

I don't really know what struck me as so wrong about it, but it j

      • I'd pay good money for an update on Magic Carpet.
    • Wow, did I hate B&W. What a thorough disappointment. Syndicate (which I think is being redone?) and Dungeon Keeper were great...but after the hype of B&W, it was a huge letdown. I loved the interface and feel, but the game simply sucked.

said it all: "2004 was truly a banner year ... how many years can we have that contain UT2004, Doom 3, Painkiller, and Half-Life 2?" (here [slashdot.org])

Not to mention LOTR: Battle for Middle-earth, Katamari Damacy, Prince of Persia ... It's hard to expect anything even close to 2004's precedent again. I'll probably be recycling 2004 for a long, long time.
    • I found Battle for Middle-earth to be something of a disappointment.

The main reason for this is its sheer simplicity- it probably is an excellent introduction to the world of RTS, but as an experienced player I felt that there was very little depth to it. It was very visually appealing, but around a third of the way through each campaign there hit a point where each mission plays the same (excepting those such as Shelob's cave).

I would add to your list Rome:Total War and Ground Control II. Those two a

The guy is impressed by EA's list, yet I only see 2 EA games on it that I'm interested in - Battlefield 2 and possibly B&W2. The other sequels like Burnout are just to flog that horse. I'm only interested in BF2 because of what I've read about the engine. I just wanna see how it turns out and I haven't read about B&W2 really. The rest are their usual sports releases plus Batman Begins, which I hear is just derivative of the Splinter Cell gameplay.

As for most everything else, I guarantee E3 will be

    • EA always manufacture like 1 or 2 non-sport titles and resell the rest as EA titles after some kind of corporate buy-outs. It'll be interesting to see where the company ends up once it pwns the industry.

And the original Battlefield 1942 sucked. Operation flashpoint was better in every way except marketing. Hardly anyone even knew OF existed.

      • I wasn't a big BF 1942 fan. Like you I did play a lot of OF and the Red Hammer expansion
      • It'll be interesting to see where the company ends up once it pwns the industry.

I'm more concerned about where the INDUSTRY ends up after the EA crap-factory pwns the industry...

Unlike burnout 2 I found the racing actually fun.
Takedown mode on X-Box live is great, where you race and attempt to knock out your competitors.

Its probably the best arcade style racer ever.

The only disappointment is that Burnout 2 (On cube admittedly) handled Widescreen HD better.

Some quality titles for the DS! In order that I am interested:
    Castlevania DS
    Advance Wars DS
    Mario Kart DS
    Meteos
    GoldenEye: Rogue Agent
    Metroid Prime Hunters
    Shogun Warrior: Real-Time Conflict
Maybe by next Christmas the lineup will be more filled out then it is now. Castlevania looks to be a triump of hand held 2d platforming, one of my favorite genres for any hand held. The touch screen is great for FPS games, possibly to the point that I will buy an EA title for the first time in years. Meteos looks alright, and the Mario Kart and Advance Wars franchises are entrenched in my mind. The touch screen might also work better than a controler for RTS, so I'll watch this shogun game. About time the DS moved out of the tech demo phase it seems to be in right now, with some full length, new content games. Looks to be a another fine year for gaming across the boards, though still suffering from Sequalitis. (Perfect Dark 2!!!!!111one)
    • A new Zelda [nintendo.com] is slated for Q4 also. This could be a pretty good Q4 for Nintendo. Looks like this new Zelda is getting back to the roots from the N64 titles...
    • About time that nintendo churned out more of the same! I can't wait till I get to play (and pay for) games I've played on all the other nintendo consoles again and again!

    • DS Games at E3 from the article (DS=DS only at E3)

      Atlus Software
      Snowboard Kids DS (DS)
Trauma Center: Under the Knife (DS)

      Buena Vista Games
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

      Capcom
      Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)

      EA
      GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (DS)

      Konami

The sad thing is that I think these games will get underrepresented because of the new hardware and their respective next-gen games. This is a shame, because as recent releases clearly show developers are finally getting a handle on the systems, moving beyond pretty graphics, and really putting out some great stuff.

This is actually the best time to own an Xbox, PS2, or Gamecube. They're cheap - they'll probably drop again this fall to compete - and the software is now top-notch.

It's always this way at the end of a console cycle. I've been through a few now, and by far the best times I had gaming were at the tail end of the Super Nintendo era. I got the console mid-way through the cycle, and there were enough SNES consoles around such that Blockbuster rented the games for it. On numerous occasions, I would walk i

    • well... afaik the Revolution & PS3 will be backwards compatible with their predecessor consoles' games. there is still speculation about the Xbox360 backwards compatibility.. but i haven't been following that one much. in any case, the games you see on that list (and older ones) will be playable for at least another generation of consoles. you're right about the games being overshadowed by the hardware, but it happens when new consoles are previewed/launched.

"This year we're going to have an E3 topic for your browsing convenience."

Does this mean that there will be an entire section on Slashdot for E3 links? This brings to mind an idea I've had for a while...Slashdot needs sub sections. Just as games is a "section" of slashdot.org, there should be different sub-sections of the games dept. Like this for example could be either e3.games.slashdot.org (maybe a lil too confusing?) or you could have games.slashdot.org/e3/?

Sadly enough, the games section of Slashdot doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. The games section should have as many posts as the rest of the site combined (because there really is that much news/reviews/etc everyday in gaming) if not more... I want a fps.slashdot.org, a rpg.slashdot.org, a platformers.slashdot.org, and more. Over half the "tech" news on the internet involves gaming, so how come there's so little on here? [/rant] ;)
    • by Zonk ( 12082 )
I don't think sub-subsections are likely to be seen any time soon. As far as I know the current sectional setup is going to be the paradigm going forward, with more sections (like the recently added hardware [slashdot.org]) being released in the future. It also seems somewhat confusing. Trees are fun to climb in real life, but I'm not that big a fan when it comes to web interfaces.

As for the content of Slashdot Games, I think it gets plenty of attention. :)

  • I've been reading some of the posts over at the Elder Scrolls:Oblivion forums [elderscrolls.com], and I gotta say, this game looks impressive. Larger than Morrowind in land mass along with updated graphics, but mostly it's the NPCs I'm interested in. There were only two drawbacks that I could name in Morrowind...the journal, the NPC interaction. The journal they clearly fixed. The NPCs are supposed to have much better AI this time, along with voice acting for every spoken word, facial expressions and an AI approaching a p
    • I agree completely, but its funny that one of things you tout is something that concerns me: voice acting for every spoken word. Obviously, that sounds like a great feature, but I'm apprehensive that a game that features voice acting for bit of dialogue simply can't be as deep and diverse as its predecessors. I mean, _how much_ dialogue was there in Morrowind - either they have to take all of that and record it, or they have to find a way to simplify everything, and take some of the dialogue out.

  • ArenaNet's superb CORPG Guild Wars will hopefully get a good showing at E3 with it's forthcoming 28th April release. No monthly fees, top-notch competitive PvP, stunning graphics... all just in time to ruin my summer! :-) I'd highly recommend any self-respecting gamer checks this gem out ASAP.
  • BTW, nice screenshot in TFA. What is it from??? Great writing...
  • Am I the only one who is not excited by the offerings this year for PCs? For the first time in a long while there are no titles that are "must have" in this particular lineup. While some gems might emerge at E3, the real innovation seems to be shifting from the PC to the consoles.
    • I hear that.

Judging from past upgrades, I am long overdue for another PC upgrade, but there doesn't really seem to be any reason to. The RTS genre seems to have stagnated, and everything else I'm interested in is just as good on my PS2. And often cheaper.

  • By simply looking at the long list of titles for the xbox (and the rather short list for xbox 2) is easy to conclude the xbox2 will be backwards compatible. I mean you cant even find (new) xbox 1 on sale anymore. (although that may change in the future) so why would publishers keep releasing so many games for that format after the xbox 2 had been released?

Also worth noting where are the

Gamecube2 titles? (they are supossed to be working on them now)
    Playstation3 titles? (Same here)
    PSP titles???! (6 titles?
    • Can't buy a new Xbox anymore? That's [ebgames.com] really [gamestop.com] strange [bestbuy.com].

And that pile of system boxes I saw at FYE the other day was probably just for decoration...
    • Or, could it be that the majority of Xbox 2 titles haven't been revealed/announced yet? After all, that's what E3 is for, along with that MTV special thing, to show us the Xbox 2/360/whathaveyou and game footage. Looks like Project Gotham Racing 3 will most likely be a launch title at this point, which aint on no list anywhere, for example.
  • Okay, I admit if you like sims and FPS, you probably salivate at the list so far. I'm not seeing much on that list that will WOW me, because I'm not big on sims of any kind or FPS. DDR Mario is out there on a limb, because it's all by itself in terms of different types of games. I would expect some unusual games to debut at E3, but I think they hold the big surprises for the show.

Still, no "WOW" games for me. Looks like "more of the same" given all the sequels.
  • Don't they mean Neverwinter Nights 2?P? In any case, I really hope that Obsilidian has a small both showcasing it, I still play the first one to this day, and while it wasn't perfect, it's probably the best D&D game avalable for any system to day. Or if not the best, the one that still has the most players still playing....or roleplaying, rather.

In practice, failures in system development, like unemployment in Russia, happens a lot despite official propaganda to the contrary. -- Paul Licker
