Might E. Mouse writes "What do you get when you combined the James Bond atmosphere and classic gameplay of GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64 with the cutting edge graphics of Half Life 2? GoldenEye: Source of course! I'm not sure how this one is going to avoid the lawyers shutting them down, but there is an army of volunteer modellers and level designers hoping to just have a bit of fun recreating their favourite game." Copious screenshots, nice looking.

    Hey, let me dream here for a second. I have enough USB ports, and enough friends (shocking, I know)... So, how about a 4 player split screen mode? Heh? Heh?!?!

    Oh, or... They could make a 4-player split screen mode where all your Internet buddies see your screen and visa versa.

      • He just wants it for the nostalgia factor. Splitscreen PC games really shouldn't be so unheard of, especially when you're on the same team. Easier to communicate a message when your buddy's right next to you.
        • Serious Sam: The Second Encounter was able to be played in splitscreen. While it was fun for a bit, PC gamers stick to what we know best: 1 keyboard and mouse for each of us. I haven't heard whether SS2 will have splitscreen as well.

            Problem is that most popular PC operating systems (that is, Windows, Windows, and Windows) do not properly recognize and address multiple keyboards and multiple pointing devices plugged into a single computer, so if you want to do multiplayer gaming, you have to buy multiple PCs.

            And even with one PC per player, it would still be a good idea to see the screens of other people on your team, right? As f

    • Yeah, and for the first 3 or so hours of multiplayer you could turn off the radar. Then it really would be challanging. But after everyone had the maps completely memorized... radar or not, you could see it coming without even looking. That is... if you have peripheral vision.

    • Actually I've always wondered why multiplayer games for a single PC has disappeared even though the machines themselves have increasingly become more capable. I remember playing fighting games on PC with one player using the number pads and another using the letters. Sure it was a bit awkward, but it was still multiplayer. And now that we have PCs with lots of USB ports and better hardware, this kind of game seem to have all be disappeared. Gaming over the net sure has the convenience, but could it really r

        In general, the PC is often in a separate room from the TV, or dad wants to do some spreadsheets while the kids are playing video games, or the PC is running an operating system that can't properly address multiple keyboards and multiple mice.

Goldeneye was one of the only console FPS I could ever play, and it still constitutes an excellent game for those N64 nights right along Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and the sort. Best of luck to them!

    You know, it seems odd how a group of random fanboys can recreate one of the greatest gaming experiences ever with just some spare time and donations...

    ...and yet, developers with their multi-million dollar budgets and years of development can't give gamers what they want.

    It just goes to show that corporate-folk are FRIGGIN-IDIOTS. (seriously, all we asked was for GE64 to be re-released with better graphics and maybe some extras. That's all. We didn't ask for this "Rogue Agent" crap. Do you hear us at all? EA? Nintendo? Rare? ANYONE? JUST TAKE 5 MINUTES TO REHASH AN OLD GAME AND WE WILL GIVE YOU MONEY! idiots...)

    If this project gets shut down, I vote for revolt...

      • I certainly agree with you on that point. The fine developers at Valve certainly deserve credit as well.

        Valve is one of those rare anomaly's that come along in the developer world. They make great games and they charge fair prices. That alone is hard to come by these days. But to find a developer that actually EMBRACES it's mod community instead of shunning them and threatening them with lawsuites and crap, now that's near impossible to come by these days.

        So, yes, I guess I kind of crapped on developers

    • Rogue Agent was made by a completely different company from who made GoldenEye. The rights to the James Bond franchise were redistributed.

      For those who don't know, the spiritual successor to GoldenEye on the N64 was Perfect Dark, on the same system. The sequel to that is called Perfect Dark Zero and is a launch title for the XBox 360.

      I dont know about Perfect Dark Zero, but Perfect Dark (on the N64) was even better than GoldenEye.
      • Rare made Golden Eye and later Perfect Dark. The team responsible leaves Rare and some of the guys form Free Radical, others form Zoonami. Free Radical makes the Time Splitters series which is pretty popular, later they get bought out by EA.

        Most people who liked Golden Eye recommend the Timesplitters series.

      Retailers (the real guys with money) tell the publishers just what they'll stock. Publishers then tell the developers just what they'll publish (see above). Then developers just rehash what's already been done, adding a couple of graphics enhancements but not bothering with much else. Because that's what the retailers say they will exclusively sell. Gamers are then stiffed, but a lot don't realize it because the gaming magazines are pretty much in the hands of publishers and/or reta
    • Actually, I've heard a lot more people talking about how FPSs are old and rehashed already and want something new, and complain about companies re-re-re-releasing games and sequels without any innovation than I have heard people complaining about not getting an upgraded Goldeneye.

  • There are lots of mods that try to recreate some old game on the Source engine with "OMG Better Graphics and Physics!". Wasn't the mod scene supposed to bring us innovation instead of shameless clones?
    • The point of mods is that you can make whatever you want to. The fact that we can see some good-looking "shameless clones" on the horizon less than 9 months after the full SDK was released is a sign that a lot of things are possible. If you want to see such innovation, all these tools are openly avaiable to you and whoever shares your vision.

        I really liked games such as Marathon and System Shock. But you don't [edge-online.co.uk] see me making Marathon: Source or something equally silly... ;-)

          Ideally, that would not be necessary. Ideally, Free Radical would say, "Hey, I bet those PC guys would like some hot Goldeneye-style lovin'", and proceed to port TimeSplitters 3 to the PC.

          Unfortunately, the ideal rarely occurs, which is where, in the games industry, modders come into play. I won't argue about the legality--it's not legal. However, the morality is hardly questionable, I

  • So many projects like this get shut down... Why can't companies get a clue and realize that if people are doing this because they love the games!?!?! For instance, that one Chrono Trigger 3D project? That site got over 200,000 unique hits a day before it got shut down! Why hasn't Square-Enix made it themselves?

    Now, maybe I can play the second best shooter of all time in HL2, the first is already there (HL1), If this keeps going on, Valve could have every good shooter Ported over to their engine. Now, if we could only get some good RTS engine developer to allow easy modding *cough* Westwood (I know they are 'part' of EA now, but I don't like EA, so I just let them stay with the good name)*cough* Big Huge Games *cough*

    It boggles my mind why mod authors use trademarked graphics, logos, name, and similar. It's just a matter of time before they get shut down. I mean come on, you can't use the 007 logo on unofficial products morons! If they would just use similar but otherwise completely different names and logos then there is absolutely nothing anyone could do to shut them down.

    It's like they know they're not going to finish the mod so why not rip-off whatever and it won't matter when they get shut down. Idiots.
    • I like that the team attempting to remake Half Life in the Source engine had the good sense to call the project "Black Mesa: Source" and have been very careful about not using anything that belongs to Valve, the original makers. Surely that sort of common sense is....well...common sense?

  • I played a map in CS:Source yesterday called "007_temple" that was, obviously, a remake of the GoldenEye "Temple" map. It was way different from those screenshots in TFA, but I wonder if there's a connection.

  • It's funny to see this article slightly further down /. after an article about prices going up. The majority of the comments on that article are "Stop with rehashing shit and calling it the hotness!"

  • My only complaint so far is that they are implementing more control in the game such as jumping and leaning around corners. This can completely change how many of the maps are played and make the game feel very different. I just hope it doesn't turn into basically a Goldeney mappack for CS.
