The Real Revolution Comes May 9, 2006 80

Pichu0102 writes "Gamespot reports that a bevy of details will be released about the Nintendo Revolution at 2006's E3 event." From the article: "So when will be the Revolution's coming-out party? Unsurprisingly, it will be at next year's E3. Specifically, the console will be unveiled at Nintendo's pre-E3 press event, which is slated for 9:30 a.m. Pacific time on May 9, 2006. The venue will be the Kodak Theatre--home of the Academy Awards--in Hollywood, California."

  • I'm looking forward to the Revolution and all but I give this announcement a big... Meh. I'm looking forward to details of the Revolution and all but why start hyping it 5 months out?

I don't know what's up lately with video game news, not just here but all over the net but it seems like sites are trying to do their best to crank out as many announcements, opinions, and predictions as possible. Each site trying to out do the other.

    • Why 5 month from now, easy, they try to just tell people "Just let us breath damn it, we pass more time trying to answer your damn questions about what you already know we don't want to speculate before long. So we are going to tell you everything at the next E3. Now let us work if you want this beautiful invention I'M TRYING TO DO......."

That is basicly what I can see why they are announcing this now, 5 month before E3. This or they wanted to say it before it leaked out and be said as a rumor.
    • It is because the industry has become so vapid and devioid of any real substance that everyone is grabbing for straws to get some news of any sort. I actually left my job as a reviewer/editor of console (PS2) titles because of this trend.

The powers that be have their eyes set on making the game industry into the next Hollywood and they could give a damn what it actually means to the end user. It is sickening. If you would see it from the other side, you would instantly lose all faith in this industry... I h
  • This wouldn't happen to include the release date, would it?
    • I am wondering if Nintendo will make an Apple sort of debut. Show it off and then ship it off two weeks later. Apple has control of its own stores and the easy if phone/internet ordering, but Nintendo could try it all the same...

Dressed like Link from Zelda.. Maybe someone will take pity and let me in.
  • That's 3 days after I get married. It figures that the one next-gen console I'm actually looking forward to is to be released literally days after I lose my bachelorhood freedoms... Doh!
  • Time to hibernate for five months.
  • Seems like Nintendo and Sony are both further behind than they cared to acknowledge a few months ago when there was speculation about an April or May launch. If the Revolution won't come until at least summer, perhaps Sony will go for a September or October release like the Dreamcast and PS2 had.
    • It's not Nintendo's job to meet speculations launch dates. Watch the TGS trailer, says "2006". The April/may predictions were based on financial forcasts released up until that time and that made april/may the earliest, and of course everyone wish it would just come out yesterday so those are the dates that people choose to believe.

Seriously, did you ever doubt that Nintendo was going to wait until E3 to give the 'Full Details' about the system? No (modern) system has ever launched without first having a large conference/expo where it could show itself off in full form; this has very little to do with gamers or play testing but is entirely about getting as much information to the press in as little of a time as possible. In 3 days worth of work Nintendo can have thousands of people from the Gaming media try out their system, interview
    • What if they're not as behind as you think they are? What if Nintendo shows off the Revolution at E3 and pulls an Apple and says "You like the Revolution (or whatever its name may end up being)? Well it's shipping tomorrow and will be in stores next week. We're shipping millions of units all across the globe for a simultaneous release." That would be a revolution in itself.

Wishful thinking? Probably. Impossible? Maybe, maybe not.
    • I really don't understand what you're trying to prove here, unless you're a standard MS troll who thinks creating noise in game systems discussions validates your beliefs/proves you're right. If Nintendo and Sony were truly "worried" about "losing" or whatever, they'd be in a much higher gear than they are currently. I think that thier actions thus far (especially Nintendo's) just goes to show that the early launch of the 360 is nothing to "worry" about for them.
    • Well realistically, I'd guess Sony are going to release PS3 ahead of the Revolution, they're much further along the track.

Sony have had dev kits out for a while now and Cell chips rolling of the production line, so far Nintendo haven't shown more than non-functioning mock-ups of the hardware.

While I look forward to seeing the Revolution when it's finally unveiled, I think we'll be waiting a while before we can buy one in the shops.

I see the headline... I think "Woohoo, Revolution comes out May 9th 2006!"

Then I read on... oh, that's when more information is going to be out...yippee?
  • The important question is when will game developers get the information and tools they need to start making games. Will it be at the E3 or will that just give the generic stats of the system (processor, memory, etc.)?

Also, how much time will there be from that point to the time the Revolution launches? I'm worried they aren't giving 3rd party developers enough time to make decent games for launch.

    • I've read that a select few developers have some kind of dev kit. No, I don't have details and it was a second hand source.
    • 3rd party titles have never really mattered for Nintendo console launches, so this is really a non-issue.
    • The important question is when will game developers get the information and tools they need to start making games.

Well, it will OBVIOUSLY be the same time the general public gets this information. We all know developers can crank out sweet games in 3 months or whatever.

Will it be at the E3 or will that just give the generic stats of the system (processor, memory, etc.)?

      • If you are seriously this naive when it comes to the new-system lifecycle of consoles, you should probably go read up on a little history before trying to discuss these types of things.

I just asked questions that were important to me. I may have been ignorant, but the only way to solve that is to look for answers. You proved I wasn't naive to think I might hear some answers if I mentioned it on slashdot.

NES games for 99 cents, I wish.

Nintendo overvalues their old games like crazy. NES classics on the GBA, what were those, like $20? I'm expecting Nintendo to charge $5 for NES game, $10 for a SNES game, and $15 for an N64 game best-case scenario.

What they should do (and probably will) is bundle about $50 of download money with the Revo. That way, people will be like "$300, but I can buy up to $50 worth of old games, so it's only really $250". Even though in reality the "$50" won't stretch nearly as far a
      • Yeah, it'll likely be more expensive to play NES games on the Revolution than on my Xbox today.
Of course it will also be legal...
      • Yea, they were $20. It was part of a big retro-kick. You could buy an NES themed GBA and then NES games on it(in approximations of the original packaging). The packaging thing was directed at a specific audience, and they actually bought the things at the $20 price point. With a ROM download, you don't get the pretty packaging, so you can't charge as much for it.

They frequently use older-games as a value add. Ala Metroid with Prime/Fusion. Punch Out in Fight Night. All of the NES titles in Animal Cro
    • because nintendo is re-positioning itself as an "electronic toy company" rather than as a "console company" (the old "console wars" paradigm rapidly becoming anachronistic) i expect the revolution to be quite cheap, probably not more than $150 at launch for a basic set.
  • Old news. I already know all the details about the Revolution I need, thanks to Penny Arcade:

  • There was a recent news article about Nintendo's profit suffering due to sluggish GameCube sales. It has been in third place this generation and is surely being drowned now that the first of the next gen consoles is out. I can't help but wonder how far their profits will decline as the 'Cube gets further and further marginalized.

The GBA, even the SP and Micro editions, is old news and is often viewed (incorrectly) as replaced by the DS. The DS itself is great (I love mine) but it hasn't captured the pu

    • Maybe i is because the DS sells itself AFAIN it still has sold more units and outsells teh PSP. Maybe PSP games/UMDs are far more prophitable for stores, maybe Sony pays stores for adds, and maybe more discs are sold per a PSP, but the DS is doing real well, and is still ignored because "gamers" ignore Nintendo, except for the ones that love them and don't need adds to keep on top of it.
    • That's the first time I heard anyone even think Nintendo would miss two XMas seasons. I don't know where you come up with that, given the this announcement will be in may, plenty of time to make an '06 holiday season.
However, it got me to thinking. What if Nintendo did skip a season? Sometimes you need to leave your crop fields fallow. What if Nintendo didn't compete *at all* with Sony and MS, and launched in mid '07? Then Nintendo could would not be facing two powerhouse consoles, but t
      • Do you seriously think a console dies after its first or second birthday? Aging systems my arse, they'd be in their prime, getting second-gen games by the truckload and an installed userbase.
Look, the DS is one year old. Right now, I don't have enough time to play every game I want to play on it, because of the holy Mario Kart. There's a slew of games I'm waiting for, and they're pretty far off.

Nintendo will release their best sellers just in time for christmas. I think they missed it one time, with some po
        • No I dont think a console dies after a year or two, but people love shiny and forget "a year ago" like it was something anthropologist should study. There is really no reason to buy a 360 right now, other than the fact it's new, yet sell they do. I was thinking if Nintendo waited a bit, they would have the shiny on their side in addition to having good games.

As to sucky specs, I never said that, but I don't think poly-pushing is where nintendo is going with the revolution. Were it to launch at the same t

12 months is a looong time to get excited about a console. People got really hyped up about the Cube within this timeframe, too....
