Resident Evil 5 Aims For Multi-Console Launch 18

Gamespot is reporting that Capcom is aiming for a launch on the PS3 and 360 at the same time, for the next chapter in the Resident Evil series. From the article: "In an interview published in Xbox360ism (a special edition of Dorimaga), Capcom Research & Development division chief Keiji Inafune said he expects Resident Evil 5 to be released simultaneously on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 if possible. 'We want to grow the Resident Evil series into a multi-platform franchise, so we hope to release it simultaneously [on the two next-generation consoles],' Inafune told Xbox360ism. 'But since we don't know the launch period for the PS3 yet, so it's hard to say [if we can].'"

  • The 360 is on the market and the development tools are finalized. The PS3 currently has little to no development tools worth working with on a game of this scale, and the release date is different every time you turn around. How long will they wait?

I find it rather odd that Nintendo isn't mentioned for the launch of RE5, given that RE4 was a GameCube exclusive for close to a year.

I'm not sure what this means, though it could be simply that not enough is known about the Revolution yet to talk about RE5 being on that platform as well.
    • I can think of 2 good reasons. 1. They have an NDA with Nintendo. Nintendo NDA's are legendary, and Capcom is unlikely to break one, so they can't say anything just now. 2. RE5 is iterative, they want to start an offshoot franchise for the Rev that takes advantage of the new controller, so instead of releasing RE5, they'll release RE:ROG (Rev only game). This would work with Nintendo's and strategy, since true RE fans will have a 360/PS3 and a Rev to play both games. And Capcom makes extra money.
  • I'm currently playing through all the PS1 games I purchased but never finished over the years, and I thought RE (Directors Cut Dual Shock Greatest Hits version) was *awful*. The controls were horrible, the voice "acting" (I know, I know, it was meant to be that way. I don't buy it) was like a parody of a video game, and there was no point to the final boss battle, I think, unless there was some way to beat it without waiting for the rocket launcher. Even taking into account that it's from 1996, it seemed
    • I might call it a little cheesy in some places, but certainly not *awful*. For 1995-96, the game was exceptional. It really had a way of keeping a person on the edge of their seat. I think it was the general lack of sound that made it work - anytime you actually heard something, you knew you were in trouble. And yes, I jumped when that dog came through the window.
    • its okay. youre jaded by what current generation games have accomplished. tomb raider was excellent for its time, but now looking back was pretty damn bad for a game. i can think of tons of other games in a similar vein. have you tried going back and playing altered beast or golden axe? i truly dont remember what the big deal was about them now looking back. you cant go back and play doom1 with the same eyes after youve seen half-life2 or doom3.

enjoy it for what it is: a milestone. if not for RE, we wouldnt

Ok, first you started to release the RE series on the PSX, and all was ok.. Then, you moved over to the GC, made RE Zero, redid RE One with RE Zero's engine, and just ported 2, 3 and Code: Vericona X. I've dealt with that. Then you release RE 4, and what a great game it was. All of a sudden, I see RE 4 out for the PS2 with two extra features within the game, and wonder why you did not do this for the GC.

Now, you've gone and stated you want to *finally* try a multiplatform release, for the Xbox 360 and th

Well, you forgot the Dreamcast in there... Capcom released RE 2, 3, and Code Veronica for the DC. In fact, Code Veronica was originally a Dreamcast exclusive until they made PS2 and GC ports... so this isn't the first time Capcom has jumped a so-called exclusive title to another platform.
    • Capcom is also porting the original Playstation Resident evil to the DS.
    • The impression I get is that at Capcom the division between the creative types and the craven weasels at the top we call "management" is somewhat more pronounced that at other companies.

The ones who make cool games are the creative types; the ones who took Nintendo's money, flopped around wildly, and then stabbed them in the back, are "management". Creative types like cool hardware; management likes imagining they are friends with Bill Gates.
