12 Days of Gaming 15

MSNBC has a look back at the year, with 12 Days of Gaming, some of the finest moments of the year. From the article: "Six figure winnings - Pro gamer Jonathan Wendel, aka Fatal1ty, racked up over $231,000 fragging the heck out of fellow gamers in the 10-stop, nine country 2005 Cyberathlete Professional League World Tour. The gaming world hyped the tour as proof that pro gaming is on its way to being recognized as a pro sport. I'll believe it when I stop seeing so many pudgy male groupies. "

    Since when does having overweight male fans not make something a sport. Anyone heard of football? ;)
    • Sigh... Wikipedia lists the following activities as sports:
      * Amateur radio contesting
      * Bridge
      * Chess
      * Dominoes
      * Draughts (or Checkers)
      * Go
      * High Speed Telegraphy
      * Poker
      * Scrabble
      * Shogi
    • Yup, and I'll tell you this...

      The next time I see an offensive lineman that has a gut that he can't ever hope to contain within his pants I'll be sick. These men have NO place wearing spandex.

      Seriously - you want to be a lineman - offensive or defensive, bulk, but do it right. Take in twice your BMR in lean proteins, lift weights in a max-overload fashion, and do plenty of cardio. For my money, I'd rather have a lineman that is 300 lb of pure muscle than a soggy lineman that is all dead weight. Sure, th

    How does the fan base affect whether or not something is a professional sport?

    Is it a competition? Do the participants make enough money to make it their primary source of income, whether directly (prizes) or indirectly (sponsorship deals)? If the answer is yes to both of those, then it's a professional sport. The breakthrough is when the participants make enough money at it to fully support themselves.

    It's not like 'the gaming world' is claiming that pro gaming is on its way to becoming a professional sport with an all-inclusive audience.

    Also, re: the pudgy male groupies: have you looked at the average spectator at an NFL game? The biggest difference here is age, not gender or weight.
    • Not really... There is only one person in the world who can support himself.

      So, for one person in the world, its a pro-sport, for everyone else, they got day jobs at 7-11.

      Personally I don't call it a sport until there is some critical mass... Whats the number of people? Don't know, but its not ONE.
    • How does the fan base affect whether or not something is a professional sport?

      This is true... there are many simlarities between prison inmates cheering their favorite gang member and basketball fans shouting their disapproval of the referee's last call. But this does not make prison-gang fights a professional sport.

      In addition, could the sensitivity to the pudgy male-groupy comment imply that you yourself might be... a pudgy male-groupy. If so, there is no need to defend it, ladies love pudgy male-groupies
      • You mean that movie about the prison fight club with the inmates getting privileges, and the guards getting paid wasn't a documentary.
    • First, you need a large enough group of players who earn enough money to move out of their mother's basement...

    That dead horse also known as "The Matrix" was flogged not once, but twice in 2005. One version, "Enter the Matrix," actually re-wrote the ending of the final movie which would be a big deal if I remembered what happened.

    I think the writer really means "Path of Neo", not "Enter the Matrix" which came out a few years ago.
    • Enter the matrix was released about the same time as the second movie, way back in 2003. The Path of Neo is new, and from what i read, about as bad as enter the matrix. Then theres Matrix Online, but i dont think anybody plays that anymore
      • I own both Enter The Matrix and Path of Neo. Path of Neo is very linear and doesn't have a whole lot of replay value, but it has decent graphics and is somewhat entertaining to play through once (mostly for the different moves and combo visuals). I'd say it has rental value. Enter The Matrix was much the same way, except its graphics weren't the best, it's even more linear than Path of Neo and the combos/moves weren't very impressive. I'd say it has rental value as well, but less so than Path of Neo. I

    [Peter Jackson] lent his name to the longest game title in history: "Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie."

    I dunno, you be the judge of that:

    Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
    Daisuki Kina Sensei ni H na Onedarishi Chau o Masena Boku
    Datsui Hokan Keikaku: Shinji to Yukai na Nakama Tachi Secret CD-ROM 2
    The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
    Garry Kasparov Teaches Chess Vol. 1 - How to Play the Queen's Gambit

    But of course I kept the best for last:

    Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work
    Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places)
    Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude - Uncut and Uncensored
    Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals!
    And that's only after going through half of the alphabet...

PURGE COMPLETE.
