US Sees Blockbuster Games Release Week 79

If you've been looking forward to a game's release, odds are that it's coming out this week. Gamasutra has the full list of titles hitting stores in the next few days, and it's a tsunami of gaming goodness. Assassin's Creed, Mario Galaxy, and Crysis are probably the three headlining titles, but no console is spared the deluge. PC Highlights: EverQuest: Secrets of Faydwer, EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark, Kane and Lynch, SimCity Societies. PS3 Highlights: Assassin's Creed, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Kane and Lynch, Beowulf. 360 Highlights: America's Army: True Soldiers, Assassin's Creed, Beowulf, BlackSite: Area 51, Kane & Lynch. Wii Highlights: Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Geometry Wars: Galaxies.

with just one title too (there may be more, but really, who cares):

    Mass Effect.

Not to understate the release of Mario Galaxy, for that is a title almost a decade in the waiting. But for some reason, when it comes down to it, I'm probably even more excited about Mass Effect... even though I traditionally don't like American RPGs. If a jRPG/Wii freak like me can be converted to the dark side by this... I can only guess how huge this game is going to be.

Thought I agree in spirit that the biggest game of the year comes out next week, but somehow you misspelled "Rock Band".

Actually, it was never scheduled to be released next week... it was originally slated for Dec. 2nd, but got pushed back to February. So no, not the biggest game of the year. It will most definitely be the biggest game of next year, and possibly the next 5.

As a huge fan of UT2k4, I was really looking forward to playing the demo for UT3... and I was extremely disappointed. For numerous reasons, I feel that Epic really slaughtered what was once a great game series. And I'm not alone; there are a ton of unhappy folk over at the UT3 Beta Feedback forum [epicgames.com].

Interestingly, I'm a huge fan of UT2k4 as well, and UT3 delivers for me. Crysis, on the other hand, irritates the hell out of me. On my computer, there's a 3-sec control lag in the demo (and it's not FPS, I'm pulling 30 FPS). Maybe the release version will be better, but until I try that (I'm gonna have to yarr-harr it to test it out, I'm not about to risk my money to test if a bug I experienced is gone), my faith is shattered.

COD 4, on the other hand, is amazing. That's really where your business should be going. I just finished the single-player, and am now trying to get into multiplayer (but having issues), and I have to say, the single-player alone is worth the cost of admission. It rocks HARD.

          • I think the control lag (if it isn't the keyboard) could be the weapon inertia. Turn it down in one of the menus.

I had a strange sound problem in the demo though. I changed the suit voice to female before starting to play and all the NPC sounds and suit sounds were lagging. The sound didn't activate with the current action but the next one. Strangely enough that disappeared when I switched the voice back to male. The full game does the same thing but with both female and male suit voices.
        • Speak for yourself. As far as I can tell, there are quite a lot of people very happy with the demo. I was struck by how balanced the gameplay was. There are dozens of ways to go fragging, especially with vehicles, and not one of them feels nerfed or overwhelmingly powerful. Personally, I think ONS is the best thing since sliced bread, and while there is no ONS map in the demo, the indications are that Warfare and ONS are as good as ever.

What are the specific problems you have with the demo?

Well, GHIII just came out a few weeks back, and it's not even all that huge, so I don't know how Rock Band is going to do, and I heard lots more about GH3 than this "Rock Band" you're talking about. And UT3 has been met with mixed reviews.

And finally, I don't care about FPSs or band games. I've got my own band, don't need games to do that for me.

The latest version of the 360 comes with HDMI output. Not the elite, mind you, buy the Pro. That's the $350 standard model, not the chopped down Arcade version. It does 1080p no problem. Maybe not, I dunno. With movies, conventional wisdom said that the audience would only see a couple movies in a summer so every studio was competing for a fixed number of viewings. What the studios later came to realize was that demand was fairly elastic: put out 2 good movies and they'll be watched, put out 20 good movies and they'll be watched. Conversely, put out no good movies and you won't get many viewers. The thing is, a movie doesn't take up anything more than an evening. Unless people are that fickle with their full-priced games, it should take them longer than that to properly experience the thing.

I guess that would be an interesting statistic: for the game-buying public, especially the ones that drop the full price when the games come out, how long do they typically stick with a game before getting bored and buying a new one? If two games they think the'll like come out on the same weekend, will they buy both the same day or pick one to play and get the other one once it's half-price some months later?

Since there are so many more adult gamers now, I'd imagine the purchase cycle isn't driven as much by birthdays and Christmas as when gamers were mostly kids.
