Sega To Bring Dreamcast Titles to PSN, Xbox Live 158

Sega announced yesterday that it plans to bring back a number of popular Dreamcast games, updating them and releasing them for download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will come first, with further announcements expected after E3. "Both of the games will be based on the Dreamcast originals, but will be updated with high-definition graphics, surround sound, online leaderboards, and Achievement and Trophy support." Kotaku has a list of other titles they hope to see — what game(s) would you like Sega to bring back?

May I be the first to say the Dreamcast was the console with the BEST ratio of AWESOME games to crappy ones. Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, F355 Challenge, Powerstone, to name a few.

It's a great day to be a PSN or XBL subscriber!! The value of a subscription just went up!!!

I absolutely agree. I think bringing Dreamcast titles to XBLA/PSN is a fantastic idea. I would love to see the Power Stone series with online support. I would happily pay again for titles like Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, et cetera.

Nintendo 64's awesome-to-crap ratio was better. Mario, Banjo-Kazooie (twice), Zelda (twice), Goldeneye, Star Wars Racer, Fzero, Super Smash Bros, and on and on and on. IMHO. Of course if you go by sheer numbers, PS1 had the most good games.

I wonder if Sega will be porting games that were not already ported to PS2 or the Gamecube years ago. I've played both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi to death. I'm kinda sick of them, and would like something new from Sega.

Star Wars Episode I Racer? Are you serious? The game prominently featured flying vehicles, that, by some wild, drug-induced stretch of the imagination, slide when they encounter an ice patch! Just how does a vehicle powered by thrust, rather than friction, lose control on ice? The whole thing seems an incredible example of a generic game engine given custom graphics to match a franchise, and then pushed out the door.

That's all well and good. I like accurate simulations, too.

The more important question (which I can't answer because I've never played the game), however, is this: Is it fun?

For example: Ridge Racer on the PSX is also wildly inaccurate, but it's a blast to play once one gets past the lack of disturbingly-real physics, even today with its rather limited (but also very smooth) graphics.

In order to use my reflexes the car has to behave the way it would really behave. Any Gran Turismo game, Forza 2 or 3, more recent NFS titles, these are all OK.

              Heh.

I hope you mean something other than GT 1 -- that game had such horrible physics, it was comical.

I had a cheesy Mitsubishi Galant with something north of 400HP. It was easy to drive -- just hit the corner (any corner) at full throttle, steer into it, and use the brake to put the car sideways while never, ever lifting the throttle (ever). No countersteering was needed as the car would correct itself neatly if the brake was released at the right point just before the exit of a turn.

Not really. All those consoles you cited generally had very good support from third party developers, and so had a huge amount of very good games. The Wii however is attracting all the shovelware (with a few gems from time to time, mostly from Nintendo) while the best AAA games are only available on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

          • Wii sells a lot of it's units to people who wouldn't otherwise play games. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a very different crowd compared to the people who were playing those leaders from previous console generations.

Personally, there have just been very few Wii games that made me really want to go out and buy one. I've played the Wii-mote games at friend's houses, but just found it gimmicky. Zelda would have been close to getting me to buy, but it game out on the Gamecube which I already had.

PS2 games look slightly better upscaled over HDMI than they do over component on a PS2. Also, virtual memory cards on the hard drive are very convenient.

I never got around to getting the Memory card transfer kit, so I just finished my PS2 games on my PS2, and sometimes just kept going with the backlog... I'm sure if I gave it a shot the upscaled would look nice, but I have a 20" tube television that I hook my PS2 into so it's not all that dodgy. :) Of course when that dinosaur dies on me, I'll have to go upscaling :)
        • Skies of Arcadia Legends plays just fine on the Wii. If you're an RPG fan who bought a Wii for Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy spinoffs then just find yourself a GC controller and memory card and you're all set.

Though I sympathize, for me that'd depend on the price. That said, I do wish both Sony and Nintendo would take a page from Apple's book and make it so that if you pay for something like that their other devices you own now and in the future would also be able to download and access that content. PSN downloads are tied to the account, not the device.
