Netflix Unveils Plans To Develop Original Shows Into Video Games (hollywoodreporter.com) 57

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on Wednesday, Netflix shared details of its plans to develop its original shows into video games. Hollywood Reporter reports: Among the program of upcoming games, Stranger Things 3: The Game was highlighted, described by Netflix as "an adventure game that blends a distinctively retro art style with modern gameplay mechanics to deliver nostalgic fun with a fresh new twist." Playing as a character from the show, the user will be tasked with solving puzzles and battling the Mind Flayer. Dave Pottinger, CEO and co-founder of BonusXP, shared that the game will feature old-school graphics.

Two characters from the game were revealed at the panel: Max, who will exhibit karate kicks and the ability to add fire damage to those kicks; and Eleven, described by Chris Lee, director of Interactive Games at Netflix, as "the most powerful character in the game" -- she will have psychic push power. The game will launch on July 4 and be available on Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One and other consoles. In addition, a special announcement was made at the panel about a Stranger Things mobile hybrid RPG/puzzle game that will launch in 2020. The game is a collaboration with Next Games, which is based out of Helsinki, Finland.
Stranger Things isn't the only show that's planning to have its own game. "Netflix show The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is also set to become a 'turn-based tactics' game challenging fans to recruit an army and act as their commander in a series of campaign battles," the report adds. "No specific date was mentioned, but the game will launch this year on various consoles."

  • Not sure if many here have read about Secret Cinema in London - but later this year, Secret Cinema is doing a whole interactive acting experience based around season 3 of Strange Things, in conjunction with Netflix!

If anyone is around London they may want to check that out, as other Secret Cinema events I've been to have been fantastic - they go all out to set up a whole world you inhabit, and have attendees dress up for that world as well.

    • If anyone is around London they may want to check that out

      Sounds like LARPing.
      No thanks.

To each his own, but holy fuck, if I had the chance to go to London, that is like the last fucking thing I would be doing.

      Lets see?
How about a couple of days, just in the British Museum.
      Then hitting the pubs/clubs at night, etc;

  • turn-based tactics? Age of Wonders has that better then heroes of might and magic that peeked at 3

    • They didn't say anything about HoMM. Personally, I'd hope for something a little smaller scale like Tactics Ogre / Shining Force. It's a better format for story-telling. Or Dark Wizard. Damn, I would really like some more Dark Wizard...
  • Name one game based on a book, show or movie that has EVER been worth a damn.
    One.

Yeah, I couldn't come up with one either.

Stick to what you know Netflix lest you jeopardize the whole operation.

The Castlevania series was heavily influenced by vampire stories and movies, albeit not a single specific one with the same name.

    • Yep, those sorts of properties rarely are made into worthwhile games. And in fairness, the opposite seems to hold true as well. Very few videogames have been made into great movies. Maybe it's just a specialization of Sturgeon's law ("90% of everything is crap"), in which a successful title doesn't promise any greater chance of success in another market.

These licensed properties are often shunted off to studios who haven't found success with their own IP. The movies studios often stymie the creative pro

The X-wing games [wikipedia.org] back in the 1990's were actually really quite good so at least it is theoretically possible to do it well but I think that is about the only example.

Adapting other media to games isn't a problem. It's when the try to adapt a game to a movie that it all falls down.

There were a couple of decent Indiana Jones point-and-click games. Fate of Atlantis I recall being particularly good.

I can do even better and name a good game inspired by a Netflix show... The Stranger Things Android/iOS mobile game released to promote Season 2 was very well done, fun, and completely free. You could pay for games that are far worse. The Zelda-inspired 8-bit retro graphics were a perfect complement to the show's 80's retro themes too.

I can't wait to not play that.

This doesn't just sound like crap - this sounds like burning-dumpster-fire, Street Fighter: The Movie levels of crap.

  • Holy crap, even more reason to give up on the streaming plan.
NF has totally jumped the shark.

You think the plots and action sequences were formulaic and boring before?
  • The service has started promoting pedophilia through more than one transvestite show aimed at kids, and other shows that sexual kids at younger ages. I've never had an account in my name, I married my wife who already had one and I've just about got her convinced to cancel it.

I don't care what Netflix does from this point out, after promoting the sexualization of children count me out of it. [duckduckgo.com]

    • So... I looked at some of top links from your search. That was one of the clearest examples of nuttery that I've seen. Most of the links are complaining about Dancing Queen, which is apparently a show about a drag queen who teaches children how to be drag queens. And there's a competition involved because it's a reality show, I guess. In other words: the children are singing and dancing.

Now, dancing does frequently have a sexual component to it. It's not entirely inaccurate to say that these children are
      • Justify it however you like, you sound like a proud-pedo to me.

When there's little boys dressed as little girls twerking it for the camera you can heap all the "artistic" and "progressive" labels on it you like, the reality is it's sexualized kids performing for the camera.

        • As I said: dancing does frequently have a sexual component to it. Twerking is an example of that. It's also, currently, one of the most popular dance moves. It would be naive to make a dance show and not allow them to dance in the current style.

However, if you want to take the position that children shouldn't dance, that's fine. That's not the problem here. It's extremely prudish, but prudishness has its place. It take all kinds. No, the problem here is this: "you sound like a proud-pedo to me." You know
